Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Grease Cap, 1.988" OD Drive In

Today, we're going to take a look at the trailer hub driving grease caps. These have a 1.988 overall diameter. This part is for a quantity of two of them. These grease caps are used for your trailer hubs. They're commonly used on 3500 pound axles. These are made of a 22 gauge steel construction.

They are a drive-in installation. They have a corrosion resistant zinc plating to them. This is for a quantity of two. The two important measurements will be the flange diameter which is the overall diameter from this edge to this edge. If we put a ruler on that, it's going to come out to about 1.988 inches. The overall height from the bottom to the very top, that's going to be right at 1.156 inches.

That should do it for the review on the trailer hub driving grease caps with the 1.988 overall diameter, and it's for a quantity of two.

This was the best match I could find for an odd (non-standard) diameter grease cap. It did not fit the 2.0 inch hubs perfectly, but it fit as well as those that claimed to be exactly 2.000" and were actually smaller.

by:

This was my first time ordering. This site was recommended by a friend. I loved the email updates of my confirmation, shipment, tracking and this follow up. My parts all have great fitment. The package arrived intact. Thank you Etrailer.

by:

The grease caps were excellent. I installed them with an install tool on both of my boat trailers. I used an install tool for doing this, which made the job easier.

by:

Not much I can say about a replacement bearing cap set. I lost one of my old caps on my last camping trip and decided it was a good time to pull apart the bearings and replace them. The new cabs have a nice machined metal look

by:

First time buyer @ etrailer, web-site was easy to navigate and find what I needed at a very good price. Shipping was very quick. Parts installed without any problems... very nice fit.

Thanks, will be looking forward to our next shopping trip.

by:

Replaced the existing caps that had access to the grease fittings with a rubber grommet for a cover. I don't think greasing the bearings from the end of the axle is the way to go. I took some steel wool and roughed up the outside and painted them with black paint to match the hub.

by:

I order these parts every year when I repack my wheel bearings. They work well and with e-trailer it is easy to order.

by:

The grease caps had a very snug fit on my trailer, so it took a lot of tapping to get them on, but that is a good thing. The old grease caps were apparently loose enough that one fell off. Great product, thank you!

by:

I ordered new wheel bearing kit’s, extra cotter pin’s and hub end cap’s because one fell off going down the road. All the parts were right and came in good condition I just installed them part yesterday everything went really good and easy. Thank you for having all he parts I needed.

by:

Can't say enough good things about etrailer knowledge, service and speedy delivery. It's a regular encyclopedia for trailer parts. Ricky knew exactly what I needed, me being a first-timer on wheel bearing replacement and repacking. These grease caps took some pounding (with a rubber mallet) but went on my 8-91A Dexter hubs nice and tight without a dent.

by:

Used these on a homemade flatbed reusing an old camper axle from the 50's the numbers on the old bearings did not cross to anything current, fortunately E Trailer has the specs online a few measurements with a caliper and you are in business. Thanks E Trailer

by:

The caps were exactly what I hoped them to be,
the pictures with the items help me identify the part I need, thanks etrailer

Great! the lug bolts were perfect also

I replaced all the bearings races seals and brakes on a small travel trailer. Bill P.at etrailer took my order and three days later I had everything in my hands. Great job Bill ! All the parts were exact replacements and the install went very smooth. There is video help on their website to show how to make the install easier. I have been dealing with etrailer for several years and have never had a bad experience. I was completely blown away by the pre assembled brakes . Backing plate, shoes, actuators, self adjusters and wiring all ready to bolt on. How much easier can it be? With the best prices, fast shipping and great help on line etrailer is the way to go.

by:

I found the personnel to be extremely helpful in getting me the correct parts...My order was delivered ahead of schedule and appears to be correct...I am extremely satisfied with the pricing as I couldn't find the same components at a lower cost by any of the local vendors; thanks again and I will definitely continue my business

It’s been great haven’t had any problems

by:

Thought these were right for the 3500lbs. drop axle with the EZ lube hubs but they were just a hair too big, had to bend the flange in a bit and then beat the hell out of 'em but they work. My old dust covers from my old axle were not deep enough and the EZ lube grease zerks would hit the inside of the cap.

by:

A++++ fast shipping

by:

I'm very pleased. The item was shipped and received quickly, and the diameter of the dust caps' diameters measured exactly what they were nominally listed as (1.98"). They were also cheaper with etrailer than anyplace else, in my online search.

I ordered the wrong size. I just tried to install them, and found that the bore is substantially larger. I have a Haul Master trailer from Harbor Freight. Do you have the right grease caps?

Thanks for the response, unfortunately we can not cross reference the grease cap you would need based on trailer manufacturer. But to determine the correct size you would need to measure the inside diameter of the hub opening to determine which cap size is needed, preferably with a precise measuring device like dial calipers. You would want to choose a cap with an outside diameter that matches the inside diameter of the hub.

Purchased to repair/replace Bolen's HT-20 tractor front wheel bearings.
Easily installed by driving into hub with scrap wood and hammer.
Affordable, relatively quick repair completed in between snow storms.
Thank you again eTrailer!

Thanks Thomas! Glad to hear we had what you needed to make your repair a breeze. Sounds like your set up is rolling smoothly again, and you're ready to keep hauling confidently!

by:

Part received is as described.
Nice
fit.

by:

Looks ok. I wouldn't have let something leave the warehouse like this (see pictures) but that's just me. Looks like hammer marks and a tiny flaw in the edge, but I used it anyway because it's in better condition than the old ones. It's something you're going to beat in with a hammer and block, so whatever and it'll be fine. A 5 star value

by:

This is a simple product. Viewed as a replaceable by most folks. I appreciate that they are currently not 12$ a piece ! Thanks etrailer. (smile)

by:

These hub caps were very difficult to find. I appreciate etrailer for being experts in trailer parts so I could fix what I had instead of having to purchase a new trailer.

  • Replacement Hub Components for Hub 9606020
While the # L68149 most likely corresponds to the inner bearing number of your hubs. If this is the case, you have either a 3.5k or a 4.4k axle. In order to know absolutely sure, you need to know the corresponding outer bearing number or the inner and outer diameter of the grease seal. You most likely need to wipe away the grease in order to reveal the outer bearing number. In order to accomplish this, I recommend using calipers like the 4" Carbon Fiber Digital Caliper # PTW80157. Thanks for the information Ryan. The Timken Bearing Kit item # TMK52VR is the correct one for your boat trailer. It includes inner and outer bearings and races, seal, cotter pin, and EZ lube spindle washer. This kit is sold per hub. For a grease cap with a 1.98" Outer Diameter on a boat trailer, I recommend the Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors item # BB1980A-SS, which are made in the USA. These are capable of being completely submerged and will keep water and dirt out of your hubs and...

  • How to Tell if I Have an EZ Grease Hub or a Standard Hub
Thanks for your question, Gordon! Instead of explaining the difference between the two, I included two pictures below. The first one is the EZ grease cap and the second one is the standard grease cap. The EZ grease cap will have a rubber plug that you can remove to be able to get to the zerk fitting that you have on your spindle. Since you have a 3.5k axle, you would want to use EZ grease caps part # RG04-040. The standard caps for the 3.5k are part # RG04-020. You don't have to use...

  • How to Measure a Trailer Hub or Dust Cap to Find the Right Replacement Dust Cap
You can measure either the outer diameter of the part of the dust cap that fits into the hub OR the inner diameter of the hub where the dust cap goes using calipers such as # PTW80157. Calipers are needed because the measurement has to be as accurate as possible. I also might be able to figure it out based on the outer bearing number which you should be able to see without taking the hub off.

  • How to Measure a Trailer Hub for the Correct Size Grease Cap for a 1993 Coleman Pop-up Camper
You would need to measure the inside diameter of the hub opening to determine which cap size is needed. You would want to choose a cap whose outside diameter matches the inside diameter of the hub. Some of the most common sizes are 1.980 inch, 1.986 inch, 2.441 inch and 2.717 inch. As you can see the sizes can differ by very small amounts. Hello Rob, thanks for reaching out. We do offer some 4 on 4 hubs that will fit a 1" spindle, but we do not have anything for a short spindle like you described. A lot of older trailers used shorter spindles, and this design is not obsolete. The only solution for this will be to replace the spindles with the BT8 Spindle for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # TRU94FR. This is a 1" straight spindle and it is the standard length. You can use that with the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K...

A grease cap like # RG04-020 is primarily intended to keep grease inside your hub bore and keep contaminants like dirt out. That is why folks like EZ-Lube spindles since they make it so much easier to ensure your hubs' grease level is always full.
