Heavy-Duty Perfomance in a Lightweight Package

Curt CrossWing

When you think of a fifth-wheel hitch, you probably think of a cumbersome, heavy-duty piece of equipment that sits in your truck bed and stays there because of the tremendous effort it takes to remove it. Well, the Curt CrossWing offers the same rugged performance and heavy-duty hauling power that you'd expect from a fifth-wheel hitch, but it's lightweight enough to be easily moved in and out of your truck. This hitch weighs just 60 lbs, which is 65-percent lighter than a standard hitch. But while it may be lightweight, no sacrifices were made in the quality of its construction. The CrossWing features premium steel and a reinforced head connection point that offers superior strength and reliability for towing loads up to 20,000 lbs.

Fast and Easy Coupling

If you've ever towed a 5th-wheel trailer, you know that the coupling process can be a hassle because of the precision required to ensure a proper connection. You have to painstakingly guide the hitch's pincer-like jaws around a small, cylindrical king pin, which is easier said than done. Coupling can be such a finicky process, that some 5th-wheel hitches even use a color-coded indicator to alert you when you're properly connected.

An improper connection can result in high pinning, which is when the king pin on the trailer looks like it's in the jaws, but it's actually sitting higher than the fifth-wheel hitch. With the CrossWing, high pinning and finicky coupling are things of the past.

Curt CrossWing Coupler Piece

This is thanks to the wedge-shaped coupler piece that bolts around your trailer's king pin and remains there, separate from the hitch base. Not only does this further cut down on the weight of the hitch, but it also ensures that you don't get the rattling that occurs when a king pin sits inside of the jaws on a traditional hitch.

Curt CrossWing Contact Point

When hooking up with the Curt CrossWing you can clearly see when the bolted-on pin box coupler is in place in the hitch base head from the comfort of your truck cab. The contact point of the head is a large, open-faced funnel that makes it easy to guide the coupler into place as you back into it. This funnel-shaped head also allows for fore, aft, and lateral articulation, so you can easily hitch up on uneven terrain.

This already simplified process of coupling with the Curt CrossWing is made even easier when paired with a 3rd-brake-light backup camera. The positioning of the CrossWing and the angle of its head lines up perfectly with this type of backup camera, allowing you to watch the coupler as it glides into place. Once the pin box coupler is nestled within the head channel, all you have to do is lock it into place with the easy-to-reach, ergonomic handle.

Shock Absorbing ShockDrop Technology

The CrossWing features Curt's innovative ShockDrop technology, which is engineered to suppress jerking, jarring, and chucking while you're towing. This durable, polyurethane material sits at the pivot point of the hitch head and absorbs excess shock so that it doesn't transfer from the truck to your trailer or vice versa. The result is increased control and comfort as you tow, as well as less wear and tear on your towing setup.

Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Curt CrossWing Lightweight 5th Wheel Hitch for Dodge Ram

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt CrossWing Lightweight Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch. This hitch is going to mount into your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer hitch. Like most fifth wheel hitches, this is going to have a place for you to hook up your king pin from your trailer. What really sets this hitch apart is just how lightweight it is.

So this top portion here is actually going to be mounted onto your king pin on your trailer, so if you we're to ever need to remove your fifth wheel hitch from your truck bed, so that you would have more clearance if you're hauling other things that you wanna put in the truck bed. This is only gonna weigh about 62 pounds, about 61.5 pounds, which is ridiculously light for a fifth wheel hitch. I can't imagine any other fifth wheel hitch being able to pick up that easily. Typically it takes a couple people to move or you've gotta disassemble it, break it into smaller parts or use a hoist to lift it up out of your truck bed. So this being sixty one and a half pounds is gonna make it super convenient to take out of your truck bed if you ever need more clearance and if you're the kind of person that is towing frequently but then also using your truck bed, so you need that clearance.

This is gonna be a great option for you. Kind of standalone in the industry right now at how lightweight this is and yet it's still gonna do a really good job for you. It's gonna connect to your base rails with an installation kit that is sold separately. It's compatible with B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese and Valley, Above Bed, Base Rails, so pretty much the industry's standard, any of those will work to get this mounted onto your truck bed and then they include the pins and clips to get it secured in place. It's got a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish so it is gonna give us a 20,000 pound gross towing weight and a 5,000 pound tongue weight.

We do also have four inches of height adjustment here. So if I undo this center bolt, I can take that out and can show you we've got several different settings for our head unit, so we can raise it up like there and there, so we've got height adjustment from sixteen and three eights of an inch up to twenty and three eights of an inch, so it's going to accommodate a lot of different setups so that you can make sure that you are gonna be towing your fifth wheel trailer properly. This does have an articulating head, so as I've mentioned, this portion here is going to actually attach to the king pin on your trailer, so you've got a couple of bolts here that will pass through once you get this just slid in place. You've got the plastic lube plate here to ensure that nice smooth king pin rotation, that's gonna sit on your king pin can prevent it from falling off with those bolts going through the top or on the sides there. So when you're going to hook up to your trailer, this is gonna be sitting on your king pin and then your hitch will be in your truck.

So you'll just back up and it's gonna be very easy to get that lined up and one of the really nice things is once this touches, you'll know that you're lined up properly and then you can get out and lower your jacks on your trailer. You get that sled right into place, then you've got this handle here that you just slide in, push in, turn, and then it's nice and firmly connected. You've also got the locking pin here for a little extra peace of mind that it's gonna stay in place but your head unit is gonna articulate side to side and front to back. So it's going to give you great control and coupling on uneven terrain. It's going to help eliminate your guesswork when coupling, being able to line that V-up like that, so very simple to get hooked up. We do have a cushioned isolator here that's going to give us our shock drop technology in between our head unit and our post. So that's going to help reduce our chucking and jarring for a much smoother towing experience. It's going to absorb some of that impact, prevent it from being sent up to our tow vehicle or our truck, or back to our trailer. This is going to have a five-inch offset from your king pin to your center of your hitch. So that's gonna provide some added turning clearance especially for those of you who have a shorter pickup truck beds and that's gonna be a really nice feature there and the handle is gonna be super easy to reach from the side of your truck. Very easy to undo that, like I said, it's as simple as pushing in, rotating and pulling out then you're just connected and you're ready to pull forward and away from your trailer when you're hooking up, get it all lined up lower your trailer, so it fits slides down into place. You can see we've got little push out there that's gonna fit into base spot there. Once that's all lined up, just push the handle in then rotate it forward and pull it back and then get your pin put in. So super easy to get hooked up. Like I said, kind of a standalone option here for those of you who want something that's gonna be really lightweight, easy to take out of your truck. This does come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to have any issues with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com, but I don't think you're gonna have any issues. I think we're gonna be very, very pleased with this especially if you are gonna have to lift it if you've lifted any other fifth wheel hitch, you know they are bulky and very heavy. So this is a really nice option to remove when you need to. They do include instructions, especially for getting that height setting set up properly and making sure that everything is gonna be attached securely, so you don't have to worry as you're going down the road. But like I said, really nice option here for those of you who are going to be needing to take your fifth wheel hitch out of your truck bed especially on a frequent basis this is gonna be like no other. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

This is our third hitch purchased and it is the best one we've used so far. Its fast, simple and light weight which makes it very easy to assemble and disassemble.

Excellent hitch! The only torque of 350 lbs. on a couple of the bolts. I’ve only been able to torque them to 250 lbs. It tows awesome and is an amazing hitch.

We've had the crosswing for a year now. We've towed our 38 ft 5th wheel 1000s of miles with no issues. It's a game changer. Easy installation. It's easily removed from the truck bed with one person and small enough to store without taking up a huge space. We have tons of space left in the bed for other things we take camping. There is absolutely no bucking as with our previous hitch and it makes towing easy. They really broke the mold when they made this product!

by:

This hitch has been great for me towing my 14k 5th wheel. The innovative design makes it easy to hitch up, and the 8" offset allows nearly 90 degree turns with my F-350 short bed. The lighter weight is a bonus. I had a small issue and Curt was quick with resolution.

Very quick delivery and Cassandra was awesome to work with.

by:

Everything seems fine but I do have a little clunk at the "V" connection point when braking from a forward movement. Otherwise easy install, lightweight and a solid connection to my Gooseball.

by:

This hitch has worked very well. I have taken a 3000 mile trip as well as many smaller trips. It hooks up easy and tows well.

by:

Hmm, where to start? The hitch itself is a dream come true, it's stable, lightweight but strong, pulls my 16K fifth wheel smoothly and does everything I could ask for. The issues that I have with it are the Torque and Re-Torque requirements from Curt themselves, the Dry Lube usage, and the rust spots that have appeared on it.

Manual says, "Torque to 300 foot lbs." Do you realize how much that is? I had to buy a special wrench just to get one that went that high! Unfortunately you have to Re-Torque the hitch bolt pretty much all the time, I mean I realize it's actually the only thing holding the hitch head to the body.... But sheesh!

The other thing the manual says is to apply Dry Lubricant to the head prior to usage . Dry Lubricant makes a heck of a mess, and when it dries it's white! Makes it look like a Seagull has been using the hitch as a nesting spot.
Finally, have had this hitch since February 2025, using it since April on about four trips and I'm already getting rust areas around the safety latch/pin area and the hitch saddle itself. The saddle rust is surface and not a big deal, (that thing is never gonna rust through no matter how many decades of use). The safety latch/pin is a bit of an "I'll keep an eye on that" concern.

In summary, this hitch is perfect for us. I used to have the big grey monster and just couldn't lift it out anymore. The Curt weighs about 60 pounds and it's so easy to remove and install in seconds versus what used to take my wife and I an hour or so and lots of pain meds after. Like I said, the hitch is rock solid, easy to hookup to and easy to disengage when we arrive at a campsite. It is my pleasure to be able to endorse this hitch and give it my highest recommendation.

The Curt Crosswing is wonderful. We pull a 10,000# trailer (well under the load limit for this hitch). Several things I like: 1. the ease of getting it in and out of my truck, it’s easily moved by one person (I’m 68 years old)— 2. The positive way it connects trailer to truck (this takes some getting used to, there is no “bang!” As the trailer pin slams home in a conventional fifth wheel… just a gentle glide of a lever once the hitch is in its “saddle”)- 3. Able to hookup/unhook at just about any angle… most recently I needed to unhook with the truck headed down a slight grade and angled at 45-50 degrees towards the curb side. No sweat!

The most often comments I get about the Crosswing goes something like: “That’s NOT a fifth wheel” or “I wouldn’t trust my trailer with that thing”… to each his own. The way I look at it is: Curt is a well respected hitch manufacturer who wouldn’t put their reputation at risk with an untested or “dangerous” design.

It’s different, yes, and in this case, that’s a good thing.

This 5th wheel hitch is very good . Easy to use and easy to remove. 65 lbs 4 pins and it’s out of the truck bed.

Custom installation kits are preferred because you won't have to drill into the truck frame for installation. They also take less time to install. I have linked the instructions for these kits for you.

  • Does 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500 Have Towing Capacity for 7,600 lb RV
I looked up the towing capacity of a 2007 Chevy Silverado 2500 with a 6.0 and every configuration was well over 7,600 lb so yes it could. Looks like lowest configuration is 9,600 lb towing capacity and highest 13,000 lb. I'd recommend confirming this with your owners manual or local GM dealer though. If you were looking for a fifth wheel hitch the Curt A20 part # C16140 would be a great option. It has more than enough weight capacity and also has a really tight jaw design that which provides...

  • Will the Curt Custom 5th Wheel Bracket Kit # C16411 Fit My 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500?
I have a solution for you. Unfortunately, the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit for Chevy/GMC # C16411 will not fit your 2004 Chevy Silverado 2500. However, the part you need for your vehicle is the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Bracket Kit for Chevy/GMC # 16418. With this bracket kit, if you need the base rails in addition to the hardware, I recommend purchasing only # C16418-204 (Carbine finish) or # C16418-104 (Gloss finish). These base rails come with the hardware as well.

The towing capacity for your 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and your 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 are going to vary greatly depending on options but can be as high as 8,900 lbs. The best way to find out what the exact towing capacity is for either Chevrolet Silverado is to compare the options that you have to the chart listed on page 4-70 to 4-75 of your owner's manual. If it turns out that you are able to pull the 5th wheel then you will need a few items in order to do so. If either...

The center of the king pin sits 27-3/8" from the back mounting bolts and 19-1/2" from the front one. The issue is that the Curt Air Ride 5th Wheel Pin Box item # LC158778 will not work with the Anderson because it's incompatible with gooseneck adapters. However,...

  • Will I Need A Slider For Towing 5th Wheel With 2016 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 6.5' Bed?
Hello David, thanks for reaching out. There is actually a formula you can use to determine if you will need a slider hitch. The formula is as follows: (A + B) - C = Clearance A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab B = Offset used (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset) C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2 As far as the rail kit, I looked up the 50085 rail kit you mentioned and this is for a 2013-2025 Ram 3500, so this will not work for your Tundra....

  • Does Curt Crosswing Fifth Wheel Hitch Void Warranty of RV Frame
The Curt Crosswing part # C86JR does not void any warranties on trailer frames as it's a fifth wheel hitch and not a gooseneck adapter. It's also lighterweight which helps make it an easier choice then most fifth wheel hitches. If you were asking about the adapter version of the Crosswing part # C32DR it also does not void the warranty as it is an adapter on the truck side and not the trailer.

Hello Bryan, thanks for reaching out. It sounds like you are wanting to hook your 5th wheel up to the gooseneck ball on your flatbed truck. Since your camper has the rota-flex, you will need to get a new pin box. I do not recommend jury rigging or welding anything since this is a huge safety risk. • Will Curt E16 Hitch Fit in Place of Curt CrossWing Hitch
Hey Flavio, thanks for reaching out! Yes, the Curt CrossWing # C86JR and the Curt E16 # C16115 mount to the same rails so they are interchangeable. With that being said, the E16 is the most basic 5th wheel hitch on the market and does not provide a smooth ride - so while hookup will be easier, the jaw that secures the king pin is just a bar so the trailer won't have a smooth operation during takeoff or braking. At the very least I recommend going with the Reese 16K 5th Wheel Trailer...
