Will I Need A Slider For Towing 5th Wheel With 2016 Toyota Tundra Double Cab 6.5' Bed?

Updated 10/11/2024 | Published 10/10/2024

Question:

Hello I have a 2016 Toyota Tundra double cab with the 6.5foot box. I will be towing a 2025 Grand Design 22RK fifth wheel. Would there be any clearance issues? The RV dealership says that I dont need a slider hitch. I plan on installing the Reese 50085 rail kit. Any issue with compatibility? I would like to add the Crosswing safety chains. Where do the chains attach to on the hitch? Thanks

Hello David, thanks for reaching out. There is actually a formula you can use to determine if you will need a slider hitch. The formula is as follows:

(A + B) - C = Clearance
A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab
B = Offset used (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset)
C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2

As far as the rail kit, I looked up the 50085 rail kit you mentioned and this is for a 2013-2025 Ram 3500, so this will not work for your Tundra. The correct Reese install kit for the 2016 Tundra is # RP50084-58.

This rail kit will work with the Curt CrossWing Lightweight 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C86JR. For a safety chain kit use the Curt # C35NR. This allows the chains to attach to the CrossWing king pin head.

Feel free to reach out if you have any other questions.

Hello Can you tell me the difference between part # C16468-204 and RP50084-58? Both say they fit my 2016 Toyota Tundra with the 6.5 box. I’m looking for a custom rail kit so I can install my fifth wheel hitch. Thanks, Dave

@Dave Hey Dave. Both of the kits you mentioned, the Curt # C16468-204 and the Reese # RP50084-58 are going to fit your 2016 Tundra with the 6.5' box. The only real difference is one kit is made by Curt, while the other is made by Reese. They are just different manufacturers versions of the same custom fit 5th wheel bracket kit. Personally I would go with the Curt # C16468-204. Their carbide finish is nice and durable. Looks like the Curt is a bit more affordable at the moment as well.
