Features to know about

Built Strong for Heavy Loads: 20,000 lbs GTW and 5,000 lbs Vertical Load Limit

The Curt CrossWing Lightweight 5th Wheel Hitch delivers the hauling power of a full-size hitch in a compact 60-lb design. Rated for 20,000 lbs gross towing weight and 5,000 lbs vertical load, it uses premium steel with a reinforced head connection point for dependable strength. The carbide black powder coat finish resists corrosion, helping the hitch stay in good shape through years of towing. It’s proof that you can have serious towing muscle without the bulk.

Simplify Your Hookup Process: Open-Faced Head and Visible Contact Surface

Hooking up doesn’t have to be a guessing game. The CrossWing’s open-faced head and wedge-shaped coupler make it easy to see exactly when you’re lined up, even from inside the cab when using a 3rd-brake-light camera. The head’s wide funnel guides the coupler smoothly into place, reducing the chance of high pinning or misalignment. Once it’s seated, you can secure the connection with the easy-to-reach ergonomic handle for a confident start every time.

Smooth Out Rough Roads: ShockDrop Technology for Cushioned Towing

The built-in ShockDrop isolator absorbs bumps, jarring, and chucking so road shock doesn’t transfer between truck and trailer. The result is a quieter, more stable ride that feels steady on long hauls or uneven terrain. This cushioned setup helps keep things under control when towing heavy rigs across miles of rough highway or over expansion joints that usually cause bounce.

Lightweight Handling Made Simple: Two-Piece Design with Built-In Grip Points

Weighing just 60 lbs—65 percent lighter than most traditional hitches—the CrossWing is designed to be lifted and removed by one person. Built-in grip points make it easy to handle without extra tools or lifting gear. The two-piece design separates quickly so clearing your bed or storing the hitch is fast and manageable. For anyone who switches between towing and hauling other gear, this setup keeps things convenient.

Adjust for Your Setup: Three Height Settings and 5" Offset

Whether you need more clearance or want a level trailer stance, the CrossWing gives you options with height adjustment from 16-3/8" to 20-3/8". The built-in 5" offset improves cab clearance during turns for added peace of mind in tight spots. With these adjustments dialed in, your rig stays balanced and ready for confident towing every time you hit the road.

Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Curt CrossWing Lightweight 5th Wheel Hitch for Dodge Ram

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt CrossWing Lightweight Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch. This hitch is going to mount into your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer hitch. Like most fifth wheel hitches, this is going to have a place for you to hook up your king pin from your trailer. What really sets this hitch apart is just how lightweight it is.

So this top portion here is actually going to be mounted onto your king pin on your trailer, so if you we're to ever need to remove your fifth wheel hitch from your truck bed, so that you would have more clearance if you're hauling other things that you wanna put in the truck bed. This is only gonna weigh about 62 pounds, about 61.5 pounds, which is ridiculously light for a fifth wheel hitch. I can't imagine any other fifth wheel hitch being able to pick up that easily. Typically it takes a couple people to move or you've gotta disassemble it, break it into smaller parts or use a hoist to lift it up out of your truck bed. So this being sixty one and a half pounds is gonna make it super convenient to take out of your truck bed if you ever need more clearance and if you're the kind of person that is towing frequently but then also using your truck bed, so you need that clearance.

This is gonna be a great option for you. Kind of standalone in the industry right now at how lightweight this is and yet it's still gonna do a really good job for you. It's gonna connect to your base rails with an installation kit that is sold separately. It's compatible with B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese and Valley, Above Bed, Base Rails, so pretty much the industry's standard, any of those will work to get this mounted onto your truck bed and then they include the pins and clips to get it secured in place. It's got a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish so it is gonna give us a 20,000 pound gross towing weight and a 5,000 pound tongue weight.

We do also have four inches of height adjustment here. So if I undo this center bolt, I can take that out and can show you we've got several different settings for our head unit, so we can raise it up like there and there, so we've got height adjustment from sixteen and three eights of an inch up to twenty and three eights of an inch, so it's going to accommodate a lot of different setups so that you can make sure that you are gonna be towing your fifth wheel trailer properly. This does have an articulating head, so as I've mentioned, this portion here is going to actually attach to the king pin on your trailer, so you've got a couple of bolts here that will pass through once you get this just slid in place. You've got the plastic lube plate here to ensure that nice smooth king pin rotation, that's gonna sit on your king pin can prevent it from falling off with those bolts going through the top or on the sides there. So when you're going to hook up to your trailer, this is gonna be sitting on your king pin and then your hitch will be in your truck.

So you'll just back up and it's gonna be very easy to get that lined up and one of the really nice things is once this touches, you'll know that you're lined up properly and then you can get out and lower your jacks on your trailer. You get that sled right into place, then you've got this handle here that you just slide in, push in, turn, and then it's nice and firmly connected. You've also got the locking pin here for a little extra peace of mind that it's gonna stay in place but your head unit is gonna articulate side to side and front to back. So it's going to give you great control and coupling on uneven terrain. It's going to help eliminate your guesswork when coupling, being able to line that V-up like that, so very simple to get hooked up. We do have a cushioned isolator here that's going to give us our shock drop technology in between our head unit and our post. So that's going to help reduce our chucking and jarring for a much smoother towing experience. It's going to absorb some of that impact, prevent it from being sent up to our tow vehicle or our truck, or back to our trailer. This is going to have a five-inch offset from your king pin to your center of your hitch. So that's gonna provide some added turning clearance especially for those of you who have a shorter pickup truck beds and that's gonna be a really nice feature there and the handle is gonna be super easy to reach from the side of your truck. Very easy to undo that, like I said, it's as simple as pushing in, rotating and pulling out then you're just connected and you're ready to pull forward and away from your trailer when you're hooking up, get it all lined up lower your trailer, so it fits slides down into place. You can see we've got little push out there that's gonna fit into base spot there. Once that's all lined up, just push the handle in then rotate it forward and pull it back and then get your pin put in. So super easy to get hooked up. Like I said, kind of a standalone option here for those of you who want something that's gonna be really lightweight, easy to take out of your truck. This does come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to have any issues with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com, but I don't think you're gonna have any issues. I think we're gonna be very, very pleased with this especially if you are gonna have to lift it if you've lifted any other fifth wheel hitch, you know they are bulky and very heavy. So this is a really nice option to remove when you need to. They do include instructions, especially for getting that height setting set up properly and making sure that everything is gonna be attached securely, so you don't have to worry as you're going down the road. But like I said, really nice option here for those of you who are going to be needing to take your fifth wheel hitch out of your truck bed especially on a frequent basis this is gonna be like no other. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Arrived on time and it was in perfect condition. Easy to put together, you do need a torque wrench that goes up to 300 foot pounds. Hitching up is very easy. I did a test tow and it was a huge improvement over my old curt a16 for a smooth ride. Looking forward to my next long trip with my new crosswing hitch. Thanks etrailer

Your new Curt CrossWing looks great! We'd love to hear about your experience towing with it after it's been on its first long trip!

by:
When I first purchased this hitch I was skeptical. Once I installed it, I was surprised about the weight and the easiness of putting it in and out of my truck. Since last year, I have towed my fifth wheel on 4 different occasions and am very impressed on how easy it is to hook up and how well it tows. The last time we went camping, I noticed another camper that had a bigger fifth wheel than I have and he had a Crosswing as well. I highly recommend this hitch.
by:
Hmm, where to start? The hitch itself is a dream come true, it's stable, lightweight but strong, pulls my 16K fifth wheel smoothly and does everything I could ask for. The issues that I have with it are the Torque and Re-Torque requirements from Curt themselves, the Dry Lube usage, and the rust spots that have appeared on it.

Manual says, "Torque to 300 foot lbs." Do you realize how much that is? I had to buy a special wrench just to get one that went that high! Unfortunately you have to Re-Torque the hitch bolt pretty much all the time, I mean I realize it's actually the only thing holding the hitch head to the body.... But sheesh!

The other thing the manual says is to apply Dry Lubricant to the head prior to usage . Dry Lubricant makes a heck of a mess, and when it dries it's white! Makes it look like a Seagull has been using the hitch as a nesting spot.
Finally, have had this hitch since February 2025, using it since April on about four trips and I'm already getting rust areas around the safety latch/pin area and the hitch saddle itself. The saddle rust is surface and not a big deal, (that thing is never gonna rust through no matter how many decades of use). The safety latch/pin is a bit of an "I'll keep an eye on that" concern.

In summary, this hitch is perfect for us. I used to have the big grey monster and just couldn't lift it out anymore. The Curt weighs about 60 pounds and it's so easy to remove and install in seconds versus what used to take my wife and I an hour or so and lots of pain meds after. Like I said, the hitch is rock solid, easy to hookup to and easy to disengage when we arrive at a campsite. It is my pleasure to be able to endorse this hitch and give it my highest recommendation.
by:
I have my pickup bed back! I had a “removable” slider hitch that was heavy and cumbersome enough that I left it in the truck. I replaced it with the Crosswing and I now have a removable hitch. The way the hitch mounts and the curve of the trailer mean I don’t need a slider hitch anymore. Good riddance!

I traded my Curt 16k slider hitch for this new crosswing
It definitely moved my trailer back 5 inches and I do not see the need for the slide hitch I rarely used.
It is lightweight and easy to manage by yourself ( my old one was just too heavy )
The new hitch has nearly eliminated all of the chucking and bucking.

It is super nice how much easier it is to manage this one vs. other styles on the market. Really happy that this got rid of the chucking! We'd love a photo of the new set up if you feel like sending one in. I can add it to your original review :)

One later and Still love it, I switched trucks to one that has a puck system, but bought an adapter plate cause I really like the hitch. The only drawback is leaving the adapter on the camper. If you have to move it with something else you can always take the two bolts off and remove it.

by:
The CrossWing pulls great the issues are hooking up and unhooking. When you lift it off the hitch it isn’t smooth at all. When you hook it up it kind of falls in very hard. This isn’t a problem but the angle makes it tough.
by:
I recently switched to the Crosswing from a Curt Q16 slider hitch. I loved the Q16 other than the weight of it. My loaded trailer weight is around 11,500 pounds. The Crosswing is a very stout hitch, and is extremely easy to hitch and unhitch, even at slight angles. While towing, I have noticed that it is quieter than the Q16 and chucking was nearly eliminated. I have to make a fairly tight turn in my Cul-de-sac, especially if there are cars parked on the street which I always slid the Q16 back while turning. I was worried about this but had no problem making the turn. The truck and trailer were close to a 90 degree angle and I still had over 6 inches between the cab and the front cap (2019 Silverado 2500HD short bed). I would definitely recommend this hitch.

I still have no complaints I have pulled my 35ft fifth wheel camper multiple times already and it did great. I have since recommended etrailer site to everybody I know that needs hitches. Thank you again for making it so easy to order and install!

by:
The Curt Crosswing is wonderful. We pull a 10,000# trailer (well under the load limit for this hitch). Several things I like: 1. the ease of getting it in and out of my truck, it’s easily moved by one person (I’m 68 years old)— 2. The positive way it connects trailer to truck (this takes some getting used to, there is no “bang!” As the trailer pin slams home in a conventional fifth wheel… just a gentle glide of a lever once the hitch is in its “saddle”)- 3. Able to hookup/unhook at just about any angle… most recently I needed to unhook with the truck headed down a slight grade and angled at 45-50 degrees towards the curb side. No sweat!

The most often comments I get about the Crosswing goes something like: “That’s NOT a fifth wheel” or “I wouldn’t trust my trailer with that thing”… to each his own. The way I look at it is: Curt is a well respected hitch manufacturer who wouldn’t put their reputation at risk with an untested or “dangerous” design.

It’s different, yes, and in this case, that’s a good thing.

Two things have occurred to me over the past year: First, as I previously stated, this hitch is lighter than most any other “FW hitch” — light enough to be the target of “crimes of opportunity”. Easily enough rectified, Curt manufacturers a lock 23256 which offers some deterrence to theft. Second item, which may or not be an issue for others, pulling with our first, traditional FW hitch I made it a point to run our rig across a scale, GVWRGCWR was within limits. Recently we crossed another scale, I was surprised to see the GCWR had actually gone down, then I remembered the Crosswing… our previous hitch was HEAVY. Just a nice surprise.

@Philip Glad to hear it, Philip! What 5th wheel are you using this with? These are still fairly new and we are always curious to see what people are using them with.
by:
Super impressed with the Curt Crosswing hitch. It’s light enough for a child to handle. Coupling and uncoupling so far has been extremely easy. Takes up far less space than a traditional sliding 5th wheel.

This is a well put together package. The fact that you do not have to drill the frame makes things much easier. That said, it is still a lot of work and if you do not have all the tools needed and a lift you will be at this install for quiet some time.

The spare tire has to be removed and if there is a spare tire shield it will have to go as well. The inner fenders need to come out and at that point you will find it is easier if the tires and wheels are out of the way. It is a bit of work to get the right rear bracket in with the tail pipe in place. Also the spacers that go into the frame are also hard to get in place. Lastly, you will still have to drill holes in the bed.

With all this work required, I am very glad that I did not have to drill the frame also.
by:
I am very happy with the hitch. The turning radius has been great and because of this hitch, I do not need to have a sliding style hitch as originally suggested by most sources.
by:
we went on a 150-mile trip it performed great. I replaced a curt A16 fifth wheel
slider hitch. Easy to hitch I will post more later after more trips

I bought this a few months ago and this is a great hitch. I will be towing with this tomorrow and can't wait to see how it performs. Easy attachment to the 5th Wheel. The worst part about this hitch assembly was getting 300 foot pounds of torque on the head bolt. Assembly hint, torque this bolt from the bolt head and put your wrench on the nut side. Once I did this I was able to get the required torque on this bolt.

Let me know how the first tow goes, Eric! Are you heading somewhere fun or more for work?

Eric profile picture

4/23/2025

@GwendolynY the first hitch was super easy. User hint when hitching using the crosswing, back into the head until you make contact, then pull ahead about an inch then lower your unit that way the 5th Wheel won't move backwards and stress the landing gear on the 5th wheel as the king pin head meets the the hitch head. The tow was very good. I had some chucking but I don't believe that is related to the hitch itself. I am almost certain it is related to the suspension on my truck. Towing with a 1 ton dually and the 5th wheel is only 12K. Therefore I may not have enough load on the suspension or may need to upgrade the stock shock absorbers to ones that have more dampening. I will need to do some more investigating to see if I can improve this. Otherwise I am very impressed with this hitch and how it performs. In fact, I have purchased and additional king pin head to use on my in-laws 5th wheel since they are getting older and I am now towing their unit to and from their seasonal camping spot.

@Eric Thats a great tip, Eric. Thanks for sharing that. Some suspension enhancement would definitely help out. We do carry several options for your truck. 2012 ram 3500 mega cab short bed! Well from all the reviews I’ve read, and the video, I gathered about 5-6 hours to install by myself, which was very accurate, directions say 90 min instal, not! It was the 5-6 hour range, regardless it went in as the directions and video said! Take your time measure it out double check everything, the kit is great, follow directions and watch the video you can do it in your driveway!

This hitch has been amazing. I can't figure out how it's not more popular. I installed the a rail system that fits into the pucks on my chevy 2500 to make it even easier to install/remove. Here's what I love about it.
1. Super easy to hitch, unhitch.
2. Takes up very little room in the truck bed.
3. Lightweight and easy to remove when not in use.
4. Smooth ride.

We love it and I've already recommended to a friend who recently replaced his 250 lb B&W with the Crosswing and he loves it too. Don't hesitate to purchase.

Sadly, my truck has air shocks installed and the front brackets would not fit
by:
Very disappointed! After purchasing this and taking a test tow I experienced excessive chucking. Made the ride very uncomfortable. I tried to adjust the height but didin't have enough adjustment to get things level. When I have pulled the rig before the chucking was minimal, not sure if the height is the problem or the 5" offset. When I requested a return etrailer would allow it. Now I stuck with a hitch I can't use.

The Crosswing hitch arrived promptly from etrailer. The hitch is of good quality and functions well. Etrailer customer service has been great throughout! Highly recommended.

Installed on a 2012 Ram 3500 long box. The rail kit itself is excellent and appears to be very strong. I was able to install with the truck on the ground and the tires on. I did have to remove the inner fender liners to access some of the bolts for torquing. I do not see how the nuts can be brought to proper torque without the use of a 3/4 inch crowsfoot, as it is impossible to get a socket on some of the nuts. The shock mount welded to the frame on one side is an example...it prevents the use of a socket. The single most important step is measuring properly because there is very little margin for error. The etrailer.com video was very helpful. Took me about 6 hrs without jack stands or a lift, but I'm very happy with the finished product and they went on without interfering with my AIR LIFT 57295 LoadLifter 5000 Series Rear Air Spring Kit.

easy install. The installation instructions could have been better. I suggest watching the video on youtube and setting up the rails and hitch on the garage floor first. Take measurements between rail hole rows (row 2 to row 3 - 17 3/4") and add 3/4" for front bed support clearance - 18 1/2". Looking over a rear tire and measuring from the front bed support, My row 2 needed to be rear of center by 1/2". This puts my rear rail at 26 1/4 instead of 26 3/4" from the tailgate. Then everything lined up perfect. The fish wire provided really works great ( threads on to the bolt like a nut). My only problem was the spacer that gets fished with the carriage bolt was to wide for the large hole in my frame. I cut a 1/4" off the spacer and that was the only modification I made to this kit. Not all trucks are the same. XLNT kit, I was impressed !

This is a little confusing. Is the correct measurement 26 34 or 26 1/4 ??I installed a Curt rail kit a couple years ago. I do recall that if you use the instructiondimension...things line up better on a Dodge front rail if everything would have been about a 1/2 inch further rearward. Is there any way this can be clarified? I am starting on another install today. thanks.

The most current instructions for part # C16420 rail kit state that the measurement from end of bed to rear most edge of the rear rail is 26-3/4 inches on a 6 foot bed. Check out the instructions linked on the product page for more details and a couple of diagrams.

Very pleased etrailer.com and very appreciative with customer service because when receiving order from UPS the box was torn open and majority of hardware was missing. After taking inventory i called customer service explaining how it arrived the representative immediately ordered another hardware kit shipping out same evening, the install took about four hours with one small modification to a mounting bracket. Works great and very pleased so far

The trailer skid plate should be 1/2 an inch lower that the hitch skid plate at its lowest point. If the jaws are out of sync or even if you suspect that they may not be lined up correctly here is what you can do. First make sure the flip lock is hanging freely in the clockwise,...
