Installation
To determine where to splice into your vehicle's tail light wiring, you will need to consult the included instructions. Use the quick-splice connectors to attach the input wires of the tail light converter to the corresponding wires from your vehicle. Once you've spliced in the converter, connect the included hot lead to the black wire and run it up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.
Then locate a flat surface inside your vehicle near the tail lights and adhere the black converter box using the provided double-sided tape. Find a raw metal surface to use as a ground point and secure the white ground wire using the provided ring terminal and screw. Finally, secure the converter wires to your vehicle using the included cable ties.
It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on the 4-pole connector to help prevent corrosion.
Because most trailers run on a 2-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on 1 wire - the signals from your vehicle may have to be converted to be compatible with your trailer's wiring. If your vehicle operates on a 3-wire system, which means that it has separate brake and turn signals, then those signals will need to be combined so that they run on 1 wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. This converter will also ensure that your trailer's lights illuminate fully, even if your vehicle has pulse-width modulation (PWM) wiring. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.
This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.
Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.
Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.
Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

I left turn signal wasn't working but that's because I didn't secure the wire properly in the butt connector. The only suggestion I would make is when they tell you to use tape so you won't scratch your paint from the tail light I would suggest using a soft rag or paper towel because the tape left gum on my paint now I need to remove that. The videos were a big help. Everything works fine looks good.
BMW X1s don't come with a trailer hitch. There is no factory option. So, if you want to tow a trailer or just a bike rack, you have to pay big bucks or get your hands dirty. I chose the latter and am enjoying the fruits of my labor. Etrailer's Draw-Tite MaxFrame 75761 was a perfect, if tight, fit. To make it work you need to temporarily undo some of BMW's bumper support and manhandle the mounting brackets onto the bolts past the muffler. The most difficult task is tightening the bolts. A flat ratchet, rather than a socket set is almost a must. When you are done, you have a unobtrusive factory look. It helps with the wiring that on the 2013-15 X1 the battery is in the back and you don't need to run the cables into the engine compartment in the front. I have used my trailer hitch now for over a year without problems for bike racks, utility and motorcycle trailers. Fully satisfied.
Great trailer light converter. Comes with plenty of wire length to tie in to existing tail lights and extra wire to tap battery power to supply the converter. I used it to add trailer lighting to a motorcycle trike conversion without overloading the OEM lighting system.
I tried to follow the directions and code the wires to the car's function. The brake/directional were on the same wire and easy. However, the taillight was testing on two of the remaining wires. I called for clarification and was given the incorrect wire by two different techs. I had to cut that wire and attach to the remaining wire and everything appears to be working properly now.
Pretty straight forward install on a 2013 Audi Q5 S-Line. There is an ground lug on the rear inside panel right next to a convenient spot to mount the unit. I removed the silver panel along the tailgate sill to route the power wire and the trailer plug tail before I started. It clips off easily, and you can reach between the side panel and the battery compartment with your fingers. There's a small electrical connector on the panel, so be careful to disconnect it before yanking on it. Make sure you replace this panel as soon as you have routed the wires, as that electrical connector is to two micro switches that detect if the door is closed... there is no power to the rear lights while the tailgate is up, so this panel needs to be in place before you start wiring. Correct wires were easy to locate. The 2013 Q5 is a little different to the wiring types listed in the instructions, as while the brake runs off the turn signals, there is a separate tail light wire. If you are probing for the wires, close the tailgate, and climb in through the rear passenger door. Here are the correct splices off the tan connector... Tail Light (Brown) - splice to Black with Green trace Left Signal (Yellow) - splice to Gray with Black Trace Right Signal (Green) - splice to Gray with Blue trace Red and White both Grounded together. The only issue I had was that the blue splice connectors supplied are too big for the fine wires on the Audi, so when I tested the install, I had nothing working. I replaced the blue connectors with the smaller red ones, and all worked perfectly then. Start to finish, about 90 minutes.
Used a fuse tap on our 2009 Audi to connect to rear fuse panel. Made the install very easy.
It was pretty easy to install, even for a non-electrical guy like myself. Still working great after a year...just hauled a load of trailer-load of firewood using the old Volvo I wired with this set. Trailer lights worked great.
Took me a while to get around to installing the hitch and wires, but when I needed to tow, I had all the components bolted onto my car and I was cleaned up within an hour! Wires took a little longer, but only because I triple-watched the youtube etrailer supplied. Although the model of car they showed was different from my own, I was able to figure it out quickly and confidently. Five stars!
Fast shipping. Well pack in box with the towing bar I ordered. All pieces included in excellent condition. I had installed by a professional at a truck rental company & it was an easy installation. Great quality!
The wiring kit was complete and was very straightforward to install.
Easy to install. Works great! No issues after 1 year of use.
I would not have been able to successfully install the hitch and harness without the tech video instructions. It was nearly identical to my 2007 BMW X5. I just had problems putting in the ground screw because the instruction video placed it under where there is a plastic pocket reservoir, and I had to improvise because I did not know how to remove it, so, I had to drill a small hole at an angle and try to screw the ground screw in level by the help of the angled starter hole, and it worked. The reflectors were a bit challenging because of having to contour my arm and hand around the mufflers to squeeze the clips. The harness green wire was barely long enough, but, all in all, everything worked out great, especially, for someone like myself who does not have a mechanical leaning in personality.
Quality kit, but the installation instructions were poor. For a small additional charge a car / truck specific wiring guide should be offered. For example orange wire brake light, blue wire turn signal and so on. The etrailer tester, which confirms the trailer wiring is correct should be offered on the same web page as this product. It will confirm all connections are good and working. It will eliminate any problems at the trailer rental facility.
A SLIGHT DISAPPOINTMENT. THE CONVERTER WAS FOR MY 2007 VW RABBIT. THE PACKAGE CAME NICELY PACKED, WHEN I STARTED TO INSTALL I FOUND THAT THERE WAS NO WIRING DIAGRAM FOR MY 2007 RABBIT. NOT A CLUE ON WHICH WIRES TO CONNECT.. SO I HAD TO SPEND TIME FINDING A WIRING DIAGRAM TO COMPLETE THE JOB. WITH A CLEAR DIAGRAM INCLUDED I WOULD RATE THE PRODUCT ABOVE AVERAGE.
2009 bmw 528i. you almost can't see the trailer hitch below the bumper. I've NEVER seen a Beemer pulling a trailer............. Electrical hookup was just as the instructions said. BMW has the battery in the right side of the trunk so power hookup was easy. I put the pig-tail down in the spare tire well when not in use. Feel free to use whatever pics you see fit. Great product and install videos.
Great product but should have the 5 pin connector for the serge brake disconnect.
I searched the internet for a trailer hitch for my compact car because I want to pull a light trailer. I landed on the etrailer.com site and was glad I did. I was able to list my vehicle and they came up with the perfect match for my car. What was even more of a surprise is that I was able to install it myself using their installation video. It only took 1.5 hours to do. I really appreciate the install video because so many thing ordered on line come with hard to understand or no instructions at all. The hitch itself is well made and a quality product. I’ve already towed 3 times and the hitch performed flawlessly. I also used a specialized trailer wiring harness from etrailer.com. My specific vehicle requires a separate wire for brake and tail/signal lights because the brake and signal/tail lights are physically separate, not combined like most vehicles. In any case, the kit etrailer.com provided was a quality product installed easily, and is performing as expected. Awesome products and customer service. I even got an email when the parts were delivered that basically said they stand behind their products.
This wiring kit pretty much works on any vehicle. It uses existing input signals to your tail lamps to provide power to your trailer lights using a separate power source, which doesn't increase any loading on your original wiring. I've used this same kit on a 2010 VW Sportwagon, and recently on a 2000 BMW 540. They do require at least a little understanding of how to test existing wiring, but work very well. They are also NOT sensitive to power consumption, so they will work without problems on both LED and incandescent lights.
Everything was included, very complete. I have never been of in line splice connectors but these did the job.
Good kit, no complaints here.
Overall I found this unit to be a good fit for my 2012 VW TDI. It was not too hard to install and it works very well. I would say that it is not the best looking hitch I have seen but for the price I would purchase it again.
Overall a successful system! I was frustrated when I found out there were no easy connector solutions, however the splicing kit ended up being pretty easy to use and everything worked on the first try. This receives 4 stars because the lengthy GND included is much larger gauge then the device has. The device also has a long cable for the right signal ... why not make the GND wire just as long. The crimps it came with sucked, and they simply didn't work so I decided to solder the wire together which worked great for me. This kit should include 1 extra crimp and splicing clip as I almost list mine. Overall it works and the install was easier than expected!
Haven't installed yet but I'm sure it will be fine. I have dealt we these folks for a few years and have never been disappointed. They are an outstanding organization to work with.
Installed on a 2018 Golf Spotwagen 6MT 4motion base model (Canada) with the 120V inverter and 12V socket in the trunk on the passenger side. I tapped into the 12V socket since its much easier than running wire all the way to the battery. The socket is already fused at the fuse panel so no need to use the one included in the kit (which would require removal of all the trunk panels again to change if a fuse blew). The trunk panels are a pain to remove, take you time in removing the screws and pulling off the clips. I removed it just enough to pull back and get access. The module fits nicely next to inverter (aft) with the supplied piece of two sided foam tape. I added a tie-wrap for redundancy! Unfortunately, the longer green wire with the kit is meant for the passenger side indicator light. I cut it and spliced it to the yellow wire which is meant for the drivers side indicator light since it was too short. Ideally the kit would just have longer wires for both indicator signals so that the installer can choose which side of the car to install it on without having to elongate any wires... The trailer 4-pin wire then tucks nicely into the access panel for the passenger side tail lights. This part of the job was actually harder than removing the bumper and installing the hitch... mainly due to the difficulty associated with removing the trunk trims to get to the 12V power supply. Overall very good product.
