How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Wish I would have upgraded sooner, is the first thing that comes to mind. The original equipment jack should be against the law of building trailers. I've never owned a trailer from a company that installs a jack long enough to reach the ground and lift the trailer off the ball, without having to use a block of some sort. This solves that issue! The drop leg alone gets you within an inch or two of where you'll start winding the jack to lift it off the ball. The side handle location is better in my opinion, and this has a grease fitting for maintenance. When installing, I had to turn the round hole into a square hole using my angle grinder with a cutoff wheel, maybe took 20 minutes to lay out the cut lines, make the cuts, and finish up with a file to smooth the edges. You will have to re-locate the 2 rear holes of the jack when mounting as they don't line up with the original ones. This is no big deal though, and even though the metal I was drilling through was pretty thick, if you'll put a few drops of oil in the spot you're drilling and then re-apply once or twice while drilling, this part will go quickly and easily and you won't burn your drill bit up. Don't forget the original equipment bolts are threaded, so you'll need some bolts, washers and nuts once you drill the 2 rear holes, unless you have the tools to thread them. I hope those few humble suggestions help anyone considering buying this. I couldn't be happier, and I"ll be buying another for my smaller trailer, even though this is rated for way more than it can haul. Worth every penny, don't hesitate to buy.

Still works like new, no regrets whatsoever.

by:

The ordering process was easy and the Jack works perfectly.

by:

Jack works great. Damaged the original when I forgot to lift the foot and hit my concrete parking apron. After I straighten out the mount this jack fit the hole perfectly and works great.

by:

Very tough jack. It's a little slow moving because it's geared to handle so much weight. But the adjustable foot quickly gets it close to the ground. My trailer tongue required a few cuts to fit the square jack in my previously round hole. The back two bolts needed holes drilled as well.

by:

If you don't have a drop foot jack you don't know what you're missing out on. this jack is a game changer for those who have to hitch a trailer daily as i do

by:

Instillation was very easy and it works amazingly. My trailer had a electric jack before and I was always having to maintain a battery, now I don't he to mess with that and it lifts super easy. I highly recommend this jack for enclosed trailers or heavy tongue weighted trailers.

by:

After one year still looks and performs perfectly. Very much pleased of both the product and etrailer!!!

Good Jack I don’t care for the pin that has the wire to lock it on.

After using the jack for a year, I recommend it as it has been easy to use. It has held up under higher than average use. Though it was listed as a replacement for the Airstream Basecamp, it required a cutting torch to allow the installation of the square jack into the Basecamps round hole.

by:

Awesome Product, Superior Customer Service! Top Notch.

by:

Installed in less than an hour with a little modification to the existing hole from the old jack. Works great!

by:

The product dimensions and capacity fit the needs of our trailer. Because so many in the past had just been broken off, I believe this will last for a while. Shipping time was great also.

by:

by:

Great products, great selection, great prices.

by:

I would have thought you would have included the hardware to install the screw jack to the trailer.
Whoever delivered the package put it in the wrong place. There is a drop box for packages to the left of gate. Kind hidden behind trees. They left it setting out in the open on the right side of gate.

by:

Delivered early and as advertised. Thank you.

by:

Service was fantastic and the hitch that I ordered was PERFECT. They got it here FAST and headache free. The square tube hitch is perfect and sturdier than my previous hitch and being able to raise it within itself makes it better than the original.

by:

The A-frame jack continues to operate smoothly on my enclosed trailer.

The 15" travel with the added length from using the adjustable drop leg works well to accommodate the high tongue height of a drive over trailer.

Much handier than the pinned and removable foot plate it replaced.

Still going strong with no corrosion issues after 1 year of Midwest road salt

by:

The trailer jack has worked great. We’ve put it to use a lot over the last year and it has never had even the slightest issue. I’d buy it again, although this one is so sturdy I doubt I’ll ever need to replace it.

It has been over a year and my trailer jack is still working great!

by:

I have had it for a year and it is still working great. Fairly easy to install and very easy to see looking though the rest view mirror of my truck. Still like it!

I have not installed it yet, but the jack came very well packaged and the jack is very well built and just what I needed. I looked high and low on other online retailers and nothing compared to the choices provided by etrailer. The shiping was extremely fast also.

Jack is performing great... love how I can adjust the length when unhooking from the truck... no longer have to cary around a block of wood.

by:

Sorry, haven’t used the trailer but a couple of times only use it to haul hay once or twice a year but it works great was more impressed with the terminal connection box that I bought for the same trailer that goes between the truck harness and the trailer wiring it worked great after I realized the color code on 7 pin pigtail harness from the truck does not match the correct wiring color code for a flatbed trailer can send you a picture if you want anyway great service thanks

by:

The product got damaged in shipment, partly because the box got punctured but it would have been ok if the cap was properly fastened to the jack. One screw was gone and the other loose, resulting in the cap getting bent

Goodness! Having a damaged cap and missing screws is not what we want. Customer service will be touch with with you o have this taken care of.

Like others have said, needed to modify the coupler and bottom reinforcement plate as the original jack was round and this is square. Additionally, I had to re-drill two of the bolt holes as they were in slightly different locations.

Drop leg is a big improvement and well worth the effort. Only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that the gears are not as smooth as I would like. I have several trailers and other square, drop leg, side handle jacks are smoother. It's not bad and appears very strong so overall I would buy one again.

The crank on the Square A-Frame Jack w/ Footplate # TJDA-5000S is on the front of the jack. It is very possible that it could interfere with your tailgate fully opening depending on the setup. If that were the case though moving the crank handle to be all the way up would help get around that. A longer ball mount could help.
