How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Mounted on the bottom of the new trailer jack i bought from etrailer. Everything works as advertised. Fair price and great customer service

by: 06/19/2024

The jack I have purchased came without a handle. Nothing in the description says that it doesn’t come with a handle. I call customer service and the automated voice says 5-7 minute wait time, turns into a 30min+ wait time. Then I hang up. I just want to get the handle for the trailer jack I purchased.

by:

I know this product line. Great fit and finish. Gear system in the head is a dream for my petite wife and young son to operate. Super value for money and fit like a dream.

by:

This side wind jack mounted on my Look cargo trailer in minutes. Now my tailgate has the clearance to open when I need items in the bed of my truck.

I used it on a basketball hoop to raise and lower it. It was a direct fit replacement!

The jack is still working great after a year, and I expect it will continue to work well into the future.

I purchased a Parkliner camping trailer which used the horizontally cranked version of this winch. I logged on to etrailer.com and asked if there was an adapter kit to convert my winch from a horizontal handle to a vertical handle. I received a prompt response explaining there was no such kit available. The response enclosed a link to the vertical handle model and said it was inexpensive enough to justify a replacement. I ordered the replacement and it arrived in two days. It was easy to install (same hole configuration). Service doesn't get any better than this. Thank you etrailer!

The jack has been flawless. A good product at a reasonable price.

Just what I expwcted. Perfect.

Fantastic company, awesome experience buying from you! Communication was excellent! I bought this Jack as a replacement for a Hoosier Hoops basketball goal system. All phone numbers on my goal were out of business, no parts from the company who made the lift, they’re gone too. Though the job took 2 people to replace. I want to replace the last 10 yrs of having a defunct goal with my new working one. Thank you guys!

by:

Just as advertised, fast delivery. I'm quite satisfied.

by:

I ordered a replacement sidewind jack lift for my utility trailer. It mounted in the same holes and works even better than the original.
Thanks etrailer staff.

Seems sturdy enough. I have other Pro Series jacks on trailers and never had a problem with them.

by:

Received product quickly and in good shape. It fit right onto my small travel trailer, and works so much better than the old original jack. This is my second purchase from eTrailer and I am very pleased once again.

Good morning. The jack and foot get goo usage with our little 70s travel trailer, and they work perfectly. They are a huge improvement over the old original jack that was on the trailer when we purchased and remodeled it. Thanks for the great products!

by:

Switched to a front crank to clear a tongue mount tool box. Works great.

by:

Nice jack. Had to modify my trailer to install but that's the trailers fault. Vintage Trailer jack holes are slightly smaller than the replacement 2" jacks. Jack did it's job on countless camping trips. Ordered the wheel and plate foot separately and it worked great with both of those. Having used it for about 20 months now I've noticed a skip/jump as the jack is lowered. Didn't do it when it was new. Doesn't do it when lifting. Other than thar it a been a solid jack.

by:

The tongue jack was as advertised, good quality and functions excellently. Shipping was prompt and arrived in good condition.

by:

After bending my old jack I purchased this jack . I did move the handle to the opposite side so I could drop my tailgate when needed.

Trailer gets used twice a month

by:

I purchased this product as a replacement for my top wind A frame jack. It was a toss up between this model and the Bulldog unit that Etrailer sells. I decided to go with this one because of the price and as cheesy as it may sound my trailer is black and this jack is black so they work well together. All in all the install was very simple and I'm very impressed at how smooth and easy this jack is to operate. It's a huge improvement over the top wind jack that came with the trailer and I'm very satisfied with the purchase especially for the price point! I also purchased the 6" caster wheel to complete the package and I have to say it's perfect! my trailer rolls around when off the ball with ease making storage a breeze. Kudos to Etrailer.com as well for expediting my shipping after I placed the order. Great customer service, I'll purchase from Etrailer.com again in the future when it comes to my trailer's needs.

by:

Good job thanks

by:

This is 100x better than the jack I had on my horse trailer before. My wife can even crank it up now without and problems and I can do it with one hand vs the two and back strain I had with my old top crank. It's very smooth and there is very little motion in the trailer while raising and lowering. Bolted right on to my 94' Valley 2 horse without any problems. Added the foot plate and now I don't need to use a 4x6 to keep the trailer from sinking into the ground.
Shipping was very quick (a lot faster than Amazon) and it was packed very well. Next month when it's time to do the brakes I'll be contacting these guys again!

by:

I am happy with this product, it was a replacement for an old jack on my trailer frame. The gear box works well and it's quite a bit easier to raise and lower my trailer frame. The only snag I hit was that this jack doesn't come with any nuts&bolts. I re-used my existing ones but, the hole in this jack for the bolt head is much larger, and I didn't feel comfortable so I had to get some washers from the local hardware store. I ended up replacing the nuts while I was at it. Overall happy with the product, would be ideal if it included nuts & bolts for installation as well.

by:

This is a solid product and definitely worth it!

by:

I was impressed with the quality and service from etrailer. I have bought several items for our cargo conversion and they have all exceeded my expectations.

This trailer jack was needed so I could mount LP tanks on tongue of trailer. The original jack was top crank and the bottles would not allow cranking.

Quality items, great value, fair price and friendly service... what more can you ask for?

Thanks etrailer!

by:

After the stock swivel jack failed on my utility trailer; my doctor, friends and family insisted that I replace the jack. This one went on in about 30-40 minutes. The side crank does not interfere with my winch tower. Improvements could be made by the manufacturer by providing the hardware and a bottom "A" plate. I wish I would have spent the money on this jack prior to buying my $130,000 broken foot.

by:

Replaced a 1 1/2" 1000lb. Capacity top wind jack on a small Jayco pop up camper. Had to grind away a small portion on A frame opening to facilitate the larger Pro series jack. Holes for bolts had to be slightly enlarged to match existing threaded mounting holes. Then simply bolted on and attached the handle. The Pro series jack works so much better than the old top wind jack and requires less effort to use. Really pleased with this product and at a good price. Delivery is always fast !

by:

Shipped quickly. It replaced an original jack from our Coachman travel trailer. Also purchased the footpad and we are very pleased with both. the hardest part of installation was removing the old jack. After using it we realize we should have replaced the original sooner.

  • Can Pro Series A-Frame Jack Handle Be Moved to Right Side of Trailer Instead of Facing Forward
You can move the handle of the # PSRV20000103 by mounting it in a different orientation. This uses the standard triangle pattern so if you rotate the jack you can move the handle to 1 of 3 different positions. Doing this will allow you to move it to the right side, angled slightly back. The gear box cannot be moved on the top of the jack so that is not an option. If you want a footplate you can use the # PS1400700340 or for a caster the # PS1400750340.
