Question:

My Shasta oasis 26b 2014’s hitch jack broke. I’m looking to replace it, but have no idea what weight rating to get. I know dry weight is 5400 and loaded is around 7k. So do I need a hitch jack rated over that or is it the tongue weight? Tongue weight is 350ish. I’m confused as to what to get and I’m heading on vacation in less than a week. Thanks.

A properly-loaded 7000-lb trailer will have TW in the range of 700 to 1000-lbs so using a side-wind jack like the 5K-rated etrailer # TJA-5000S-B or the 3K-rated # TJDA-5000S is an excellent choice.

You want to select a tongue jack based on your actual loaded trailer tongue weight (TW) but it is still always a good idea to select a jack with more capacity than you actually need. This rarely adds much cost but it does provide you with a safety margin and allows the selected jack to work less hard, and therefore, potentially operate properly and last longer.
