How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Video Transcript for Lippert Quick Drop Tongue Jack Review

Hey guys, we're going to be here at etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at Lippert components quick drop jack. This is designed for A frame trailers and just by looking at it, it looks like any standard manual jack. This one though, it's got a little trick up its sleeve, that I really like. Using a manual or a power drill, with 19 mm socket, we're actually able to operate our jack up and down. While this is going to save us a lot of money over the normal power jacks, we're not going to have to deal with the maintenance and things like that, that we're generally used to. We also don't have to worry about having a battery onboard.

As long as we've got our drill and a 19 mm socket, we can raise and lower this at any time. If for some reason we don't have it, we still have the handle there to allow us to operate. Now, the jack itself, if used in the manual mode, there's a nice handle here, you see we've got the grooves down through there, so we can get a good grip on it and we won't have to worry about our hands slipping. And, overall we're looking at 6 inches from the center of our jack here to the outer edge. Now, on some jacks you will see handles that are a little bit longer and I think this is going to be a really good solution especially if you've got like propane tanks or storage areas or things like that, that might get in the way. Now, of course, our jack's nice, heavy duty steel material and it has that black powder coat finish on it to help it last for a good long time. The outer tube here, is 2 and 1/4 inches, while the inner tube here is going to be 2 inches and you can see it does have the 5 and 3/8 inch foot plate.

That helps to spread that energy out of that pressure out over a greater area. This is really going to reduce the risk of our jacks sinking down into softer ground. Now, the pinhole being through there, is also going to allow you to use a caster wheel if you want to move it around a little bit in the driveway there or even a drop leg. Now, we've got an indention right here that's going to line up with the groove in that lower leg, or the inner leg. Basically, that keeps this from rotating. So, if we do put on a caster leg or something like that, as we turn the jack handle or use our jack, we won't have to worry about it spinning in circles.A few other specifications, just to help ensure this is going to work in your application, is that the jack offers a 2000 pound lift capacity.

So, this is going to be really good for those 3500 pound trailers. Generally, on a 3500 pound trailer, you're not going to have near 2000 pounds of tongue weight. Now, a couple measurements we like to give are the bracket height, when the jack's raised up as high as it can go and when it's lowered down all the way. Basically, that's going to give you your range, so you know if this is going to work out for you. Now, we're going to go from the bracket, we call that the top of the cup where here the surface that our jack mounts down to. And, in it's highest position, we're looking at just over 23 and 1/2 inches, so 23 and 1/2, 23 and 5/8.

Now, at our lowest setting here, we're looking at just under 9 and 1/2, so that's going to give us just over 14 inches of travel and that's pretty typical with jacks, they'll build a little bit more travel than what it states. And then the height of it, from our bracket here to the top here, we're looking at about 13 and 1/8 and then, when we bring our handle out, to the top of that, it's about 16 and 1/2. So, just ensure you got enough room for the jack, if you have any kind of overhangs or anything like that. Now, to begin the installation of our jack, of course we'll want our old jack to be removed. Basically, there's two ways you can make this happen. You can connect to a vehicle and allow it to support the weight while you remove the jack, or, you can see we're just using a couple of jacks stands to support the weight. Now, the outer tube on our jack is 2 and 1/4 inches, so we want to ensure that our coupler has a hole in it that size. Most of them are going to be accommodating and it's going to attach using the 3 holes that we can see right there. Just drop that down and in. We're going to rotate that, to align our holes. In this case, the flat point or the flat triangle part here, should be facing forward. Now, when removing your existing jack, you do want to hang on to your hardware. If, for some reason, you need to replace that hardware, you want to use a minimum diameter of 3/8 of an inch and you'll want to ensure that you're using at least grade 5. We'll get these snugged down now and we're going to torque them down. Now, generally with this size hardware, we're looking for somewhere between 24 and 28 foot pounds. Right, that's really all there is to it there and we'll put that foot plate on the bottom. We're going to take the provided pin and clip, we'll just slide our foot plate up and on, get our holes lined up and pass that all the way through. And, at that point, just reinsert our clip.

I really like the idea of this product as I felt it would make it much quicker to hook up the weight distribution and also help set up at the campground. I installed the quick drop and have tested it a few times on my Clipper 17BH travel trailer. The 2,000 lb capacity seems more than adequate (only 400 approx tongue weight) and this jack will crank up the trailer just fine.... by using the hand lever on top. When I tried my 20v Porter Cable brushless drill in low gear it kept stalling out, I then tried my traditional 20v Dewalt in low gear and it took -everything- this drill had to raise the jack. It definitely works your wrist hard and the torque snap back from the drill was terrible. Also with this being a top wind jack, the handle hits my propane tank, although I can lift the handle slightly while cranking and do have enough clearance to use by hand if needed. The product is very well made and quality is excellent, but I don’t feel that this will work out well in my travel trailer application due to the stress that it will place on my tools and I would still have to crank it manually anyway when hooking up weight distribution (no way drill would lift any more!). I really don’t want to have to buy a $350 high power drill to use this, so I will throw this one on the shelf and put on a traditional electric jack. The quick drop would be an excellent product for a lighter utility type or small cargo trailer.

It was very easy to install, and much easier to work than the tongue jack that came with the trailer.

just opened package and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and the "heft" of the jack. I ran the jack up and down with my cordless impact and my gosh it has plenty of power to spare. Should not be a problem on trailer Thanks again to Lippert products for a quality unit!!

Works great, easy to use. Foot fell off one day driving down the interstate for whatever reason. Other than that, it works well every time.

Disappointed..... It arrived yesterday. Installed today. The old one came off easily, the new one went on perfectly and looked good. The drill made the jack go up and down just fine, UNTIL a little weight was on it then the drill would not make the tongue go up. I have a new Milwaukee drill that works fine for the leveling jacks and everything else but could not do the job. I have a 5000 lb toy hauler that is one of the lightest on the market. Perhaps I need a heavy duty AC powered drill? This was not advised when I ordered it. What would you suggest? Perhaps returning it and ordering a battery powered jack that you sell. Please advise.... Kendall

Was highly interested in this jack, previous power jack died suddenly. Installed in a matter of minutes and worked just as advertised. Though, the bolts to secure were not in box. Purchased through local hardware store.
