How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack lifts your trailer high enough at the tongue to allow you to couple it with your vehicle. Usually, your tongue weight is about 10-15% of your gross trailer weight (GTW). For example, a 10,000-lb trailer has a tongue weight of 1,000 lbs to 1,500 lbs. To raise the tongue of a trailer this size, you'd need a jack that can handle a static load of no less than 1,500 lbs. And, yes, it's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time fishing.

Excellent delivery time!
Very quick and
easy installation.
The jack feels well made the cranking is smooth.
Highly recommend this jack.

After a year of use, the trailer jack is still working like a champ! Replacing a wheeled stand was a good call. The boat is too heavy to roll around and only increases the risk of rolling down the driveway.

bought this jack for our 29' RB-S trailer and it worked out perfectly. easy swap! Customer service was quick to respond with a quote as well.

Nice jack. It's on a trailer with about 100 pounds of tongue weight empty. I store it outside. It has held up well. I have a small bucket over the top to keep the rain out.

Easy to install. Rugged and easily adjustable. Second trailer I’ve used this jack.

Great product. Easiest thing I have ever installed on my boat or trailer.

It's exactly what I needed. Easy to install, and what a pleasure! Just drop the sleeve and a couple cranks- No more wheel spinning around.

The tongue jack is constructed very well. It lifts the trailer for my 25 ft boat effortlessly. It is low geared and easy to raise or lower the trailer.

Excellent service and fast shipping. Will definitely buy from e trailer again.

Great replacement jack. Working flawlessly exceeding my expectations!!

Trailer Jack served as a direct replacement on the Sport Trail trailer for my 26’ center console. Timely delivery and good value on the part

Best jack I've ever had. 1 year later and still very smooth. I like the verticle position that allows water to drain out.

Bought this jack to replace cheap original equipment on an aluminum pontoon trailer. Super easy to crank, love the drop leg, still like new after a year of use in salty south Florida. Highly recommend 2500 pound jack.

I love it! I bought a used trailer for my 50 million pound pontoon ( OK, maybe 2500 lbs). The jack that came with it failed the fourth time I lifted it, and the tongue weight was so high that a concrete block I was using underneath shattered with the tongue resting on it. I replaced the broken concrete with a block of wood which is much better. The old jack also had a wheel which was utterly useless because of the trailer weight. This new jack installed easily and cranks smoothly and with almost no effort. Also has a grease zirc built in, but did not say how often to grease it. Very nice...........

Peachy keen. I am a happy dog

Completely 100% satisfied with this flat bottom tongue jack. Works like a champ and is much safer than the Jack with the wheel that came on the trailer. Goes straight up and down and does not twist or bend like the original wheel bottom kaxl that came on the trailer.

Mike O.

After a year Jack still works like new. This is the only one I would buy as I’ve had several in the past with the wheel that were unstable and unsafe. Remember to grease the fitting on the standard at least once a year.

Jack is perfect for my boat trailer. It has the proper lift height to drain the deck water from boat compared to original trailer jack. It’s very sturdy and stable for this 25’ trailer. Great product.

Works well except the crank handle is very rusty and will need some sanding and paint.

Good replacement, make sure to grease it up good.

the jack showed up quickly and was easy to install

Looks to be a quality product, installation was straight forward and jack works nicely.

Delivery as promised! Quality jack! Super easy to install. We had ordered the same jack from Autoplicity and they screwed up our order big time. We should have known better! Old jack with wheel was on bent frame and wouldn't stay straight! Thank u we are very happy!

Still great! We absolutley love it. Great quality.

Bought this trailer jack a year ago and it is just what I wanted. Works well and wish I had purchased it a long time ago. Highly recommend it.

Still working great!! Only wish I spent the extra money and got the one that doesnt have to be manually raised. Still happy I have it!

So far so good. well crafted, Straight forward putting it on w/ 4 bolts. Importantly kept the boat upright. Shipping was quick and price was perfect. Now comes the test of time. Fingers crossed that with some grease from time to time i will get many yrs out of it.

Excellent customer service and follow up from customer service after my item arrived. A shipping issue was resolved in a timely and professional manner. I bought a second trailer jack from this company just because of this!

I bought this one over the less expensive one on Amazon. I feel it was well worth it and is built a little better. It works exceptionally well and the grease zerk is great. The adjustable leg is a game changer. I want to have this last my life of use for it.

The trailer tongue jack was exactly as described and fit. It seems very sturdy and I feel it will last a good long time. I have been an etrailer customer since 2008 and never had a complaint about any part of any transaction in the past. This time however, communication was an issue. I never got an email that my order was received. I had to write to etrailer days later to confirm they received my order. Then I received an email that the item was "in stock" , but wouldn't ship for 8 more days. Had to write to them about that.... The order then shipped promptly. Thise issues would not stop me from doing business with them again, because I know I get good quality parts at fair prices. But I do hope their customer communication goes back to what it was...

My Square Jack / Ram Jack, lasted from April 2013 – about April 2019

I purchased a 2013 inshore Sundance DX22, the trailer came with a 2500 lb Ram Jack, that jack lasted till 2019 that’s around six years. I then came to to purchase a MJSQ-2500B Square Jack which is made by Ram Jack and is the same jack that came with my trailer.

my Ram jack was a 2013 (looked identical) to the etrailer Square jack that I ordered (see pics), the jack lasted till 2019 before the bottom rusted enough so that the shaft on the inside would not extend out or retract inward.

I live in Florida near the salt water, and launch in salt water all year round, so the jack does get salt spray and salt mist on it all the time, and sometimes the bottom of the jack is in the salt water, depending on the tide at the ramps.

Having had boats all my life, six years is a long time for a jack to last in salt water environment. Just to give you an idea of my saltwater environment, my Dodge Ram 3500 bumper and tail pipe rusted out before my jack did (see pics)

Not saying that this is normal or not, just that this was my experience with my Ram jack. Hope my new Ram jack lasts as long.

Pics show it mounted, I decided to spray some zinc galvanized paint on the bottom of the jack, just for a little added protection.,

As far as etrailer goes, from time to time I order parts from them, they never disappoint.

Thanks etrailer for my replacement Ram jack.

  • Similar Version of etrailer Side Mount Jack with at Swivel and Wheel Caster
The jack part # MJSQ-2500B is made by RAM jacks like the jack you have now. The most similar swivel jack with a wheel caster would be the part # MJ-1200B which has a 1,200 lb capacity, a wheel like you want, and swivels like you want it to as well.

  • Mounting Hole Size for A-Frame Trailer Jacks
The mounting hole dimensions of A-frame jacks are a standard 3 inches apart on center, so you will need to weld your new jack on. I highly recommend the etrailer Round, A-Frame Jack # TJA-5000S-B, which has a 5,000 lb capacity and will give you 15" of lift. It has an outer tube diameter of 2-1/4" and sidewind handle; for a footplate you would want # JF-99. This jack has been highly praised by our customers. I've added links to video reviews of this jack for you to take a look at as well.

  • Can Handle on 2,500 Lb Square Jack - Drop Leg be Reversed
The handle on the Square Jack part # MJSQ-2500B which is our version of the Fulton FHD2500/HD25000101 is not reversible. The jack is designed to be mounted on the outside of the frame so any other orientation would affect function. In regards to capacity, the jack has a 2,500 lb rating but this only corresponds to the tongue weight of the trailer. The tongue weight should only be around 10-15% of the trailer's loaded weight. It would be more than capable of handling a trailer your size.

  • What Size Bolts Come With the 2,500 Lb Marine Square Jack MJSQ-2500B
The Square Jack with Footplate part # MJSQ-2500B comes with 3/8" hex head bolts. The bolt holes in the bracket will be just slightly larger than this but I do not have an exact measurement on this. If you want to use a larger bolt then you would need to re-drill the bolt holes but I do not recommend this.

  • Recommended Drop Leg Jack for 3 Inch x 5 Inch Trailer Frame
The Square Jack w/ Footplate part # MJSQ-2500B will work with trailer frames 3" wide x 5" tall and has a zinc finish so it will resist corrosion just like your galvanized trailer frame. The mounting bracket on the jack is at the very bottom of the outer tube so you don't have to worry about a swing-away but we do have the Fulton F2 Swing-Up Jack part # F1413230134 if you want a swing-away feature though you will pay more for this. • Position of Foot Plate on Square Jack w/Foot Plate # MJSQ-2500B
The foot plate of the Square Jack w/ Footplate # MJSQ-2500B that you referenced can attach to the jack in either orientation. You can have the foot plate longways so that it's parallel with the direction of travel or perpendicular. I would agree that parallel like you mentioned would seem more logical since rolling forward or back would be more likely where you'd want the support.

  • Recommended Trailer Jack For a Home Made Trailer With Wheels For Maneuverability
I recommend checking out the Xtreme Off-Road Swing-Up Trailer Jack w/ Dual Wheels # ORJW750D for your homemade trailer. This jack allows you to swing the jack which will get the wheels further off the ground when not needed unlike the Square Jack w/ Footplate # MJSQ-2500B you found. We do not have a wheel kit for this jack. While we do not have a trailer jack with pneumatic tires the Xtreme jack above includes steel wheels with rubber tires for durability.

For your utility trailer with a 2-1/2" wide tongue I recommend checking out the Square Jack w/ Footplate # MJSQ-2500B. This jack has a 7-1/4" bracket height when it is retracted and extends to 22-5/8", giving you 15-3/8" of travel. • What is the Difference Between the Fulton HD50000101 and the etrailer MJSQ-2500B?
Though these two jacks do look to be nearly identical, there is one fairly large difference, and one lesser of one as well. The large one being the weight capacities they can handle. The # HD50000101 is rated up to 5,000 pounds, whereas the # MJSQ-2500B is rated up to 2,500 pounds. So it is mostly the internals that are different, which is why they look like each other. I do have some great jack options for you and your boat but the jack does not need to be rated for the entire weight of the boat, at least directly. For example, a trailer jack rated at 2,500 lbs is more than enough for a 12,000 lb boat. The reason for this is that the jack only need to be rated for the tongue weight, which is usually about 10-15% of the loaded boat+ trailer weight. Therefore, if you had a 13,000 lb loaded boat and trailer then all you would need the jack to be rated for...
