Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - 40038 Review

Today were going to take a look at the Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038. This hitch ball is 2 inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of 1 inch, and a shank length of 2 inches. The wrench flats, as you can see here and here, are 1 5/8 of an inch apart. This item has a weight capacity of 12,000 pounds. It features fine threads for more holding strength.

It meets US V5 specifications and it is tested for safety. Now were going to bring in our ball mount and our trailer hitch demonstrator to show you how this would be installed. You would just slide the shank into the ball hole, place the washer, the washer and the nut do come with this item, and then finger tighten that, and once youve got that as tight as you can get it by finger tightening, you would get your wrench and tighten it the remainder of the way so you can use it with your trailer coupler and attach your trailer. That should do it for our Curt 2-inch hitch ball, part number 40038.

Nice heavy duty ball. It is rated double the weight of the ball I have been using. I would rated it higher if it was made in USA instead of China. 137759

The folks at etrailer.com were very helpful and professional in assisting me obtain an alternative to my initial order which was on back order until December due to the Covid-19 virus. I initially ordered the Curt Rebellion XD Shock-Absorbing Adjustable Ball Mount - 2" Hitch - 6-1/4" Drop - 15K with a 2" and a 2 5/16" stainless steel balls. Due to their diligence I was able to learn of the backorder status immediately. Consequently, they were able to provide a work around (chrome balls as opposed to stainless steel). While their dedication facilitated on-time delivery. I not only recommend them, but I will definitely shop with them again. 895714

As all products from Curt Mfg. the hitch ball was finished well and looks to be very good quality. The only reason for 4 stars instead of 3, was the fact it was made in China. I was under the impression that Curt Mfg. products were all made in the US or Mexico. 875157

The bolts that hold the OEM GM Trailer Hitch 25980916 to your 2015 GMC Terrain will need to be torqued to 74 ft lbs. The amount of torque that gets applied to the hitch ball on the ball mount however will vary based on what hitch ball it is. For example, if you were using the 2" Hitch Ball part # 40038 which has a 1" diameter shank then the nut will need to be torqued down to 250 ft lbs. This figure will be similar for other hitch balls with a 1" diameter shank. If you don't want to...

  • Why is Curt Hitch Ball # 40038 w/ 12,000 LB GTW Shank Diameter Smaller Than Husky Ball w/ 8,000 LB
I spoke with my contact at Curt and numerous factors go into the capacity of a hitch ball, including the way the shank is threaded as well as the way the metal was finished. The Curt Hitch Ball, # 40038, has been tested and has a 12,000 lb towing capacity. You definitely want to use a hitch ball that is rated high enough for the weight of your horse trailer and part # 40038 would cover this. Although the Husky ball looks to be sturdier, you mention that it only has an 8,000 lb capacity...

Forest River does not maintain coupler specs on their website for your 2012 Grey Wolf M-26BH but it is easy enough to examine the coupler on the trailer to see the required ball size; this will usually be stamped into the steel housing. Based on this trailer's dry hitch weight of 402-lbs, odds are that the coupler takes either a 2-inch ball or a 2-5/16-inch ball. • Why Do CURT Trailer Hitch Balls 40038 and A-90 have Such Different Towing Capacities
I spoke with my contact at CURT and he told me what gives the CURT Hitch Ball, # 40038, more strength is the way it is threaded and that it is heat treated beyond what # A-90 is so that gives the 40038 the higher rating. He added that even though 40038 has a smaller shank, the way that the metal was finished allowed it to be tested and rated higher.

  • Winch Recommendation for a PWC Trailer
Sorry to hear about your Sea Doo falling off your trailer! When picking out a boat or PWC winch the general rule of thumb is that you need a winch with a 2 to 1 capacity for the weight of the watercraft. So since 500 kg equals right at 1,100 lbs and everything we offer is rated in lbs you would want at least a 550 lb rated winch. A weight distribution system is not required to tow with your 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan, though a system is recommended if your trailer weight is more than 50 percent of your vehicle's GVWR. Even a small pop-up is going to surpass the 50 percent mark of your Grand Caravan so I highly recommend a weight distribution system with sway control. We have asked Curt before about lightweight trailers between 2k and 5k and they do agree there won't be enough tongue weight to compress the cushioned isolator so you would essentially be paying for something you can't use. Having a longer ball mount like this will not reduce the capacity of your hitch at all. This will give you a length of 15-3/4 inches from the center of the ball to the hitch pin hole.
