Ball Mount Recommendation for Chevy Colorado Towing Scamp Travel Trailer

Updated 01/12/2026 | Published 01/08/2026

Question:

I have a Chevy Colorado Z71 4WD and I will soon be towing a Scamp 16 Travel Trailer: Tongue Weight 175 to 250 LBS and GVWR 3,500 LBS. The botton of my 2 hitch to ground 16-1/2. Scamp Trailers recommends you have the biggest hitch available with a 2 inchdrop ball installed on your vehicle: 2 inch Ball - Recommended Ball Height top of ball to ground 21 inch. What would you recommend?

Hey Jim, thanks for the dimensions from both your trailer hitch on your Colorado and the coupler of your Scamp trailer. With that info what you need is a 1 inch rise from your ball mount with a 2 inch hitch ball. For that the Curt ball mount part # C45030 with the hitch ball part # 40038 and you'd be set! Got any big trips planned?

Thanks Jameson. I am a rookie this is all new to me; however, I wanted to ask you about adding a beefier and more flexible 2" ball mount hitch. Also, to avoid truck squatting while towing. What do you think of (1)Blue Ox Adjustable Ball Mount with Clamshell for 2-1/2" Hitch - 4" Drop/Rise - 12,000 lbs Part Number: BLU89XR or the Bullet Proof 2" ball mount with 2inch rise/drop?

@JimT We talked about it already in a different question but the Blue Ox part # BLU89XR is a really great option that will work great now and would work for future trailer too.
