Video Transcript for Complete Breakdown of the 2" Hitch Ball

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C40033. This is the Curt Two-inch Hitch Ball. It's going to have the one-inch rise, and it's rated at 6,000 pounds. The high-rise design is going to let you easily match the ball to your trailer height. The trailer hitch ball is going to sit an extra inch above the ball mount platform, so the rise is this portion right here. It's going to offer fine threads. These are going to provide exceptionally tight, strong grip once installed.

This is a steel construction with a nickel chrome finish, so it's designed to resist rust and corrosion. The lock washer and the nut are both included. The ball diameter is going to measure 2 inches. Here at the shank, it's going to give us a shank length measuring from the bottom of the platform to the end of the threaded portion of 2 and 1/8 of an inch. It's going to give us a shank diameter of one inch. The ball shank diameter, this is just something to keep in mind, that should be within 1/16th of an inch of the ball mount hole diameter on the ball mount.

Keep that in mind when choosing a ball mount or when choosing a hitch ball. The rise, we'll take a measurement of that. That's going to measure right at one inch. Again, the hitch ball is rated with a capacity of 6,000 pounds. Very easy installation. All you have to do is place the threaded portion down through the ball hole, and that would be on the ball mount.

Place on the lap washer followed by the nut, then you need to get everything tightened down and torqued to specifications. It's going to come with a nice little instructional tag that's going to be installed on the shank. You want to be sure to remove that. That's going to have the proper torque rating on there, and some other information that you need to go off of. That's going to do it for our review of part number C40033. This is the Curt Two-inch Hitch Ball.

My poor rating is all about the product and no reflection on etrailer - As others have commented this hitch ball needs to be made available in Stainless Steel. It has, so far, functioned as advertised and fits my requirements. However, the material and finish are poor. I use this to tow a 2000lb GVWR trailer (Hélio O2). I routinely clean and grease my hitch coupler and this hitch ball. In the short time and relatively few miles I've used this the finish and base material are wearing away rapidly (see attached pictures taken at time of this review).
Also, to be nit-picky: It does not make sense why the 2" Rise (Item # C40034) is priced less than the 1" rise (Item # C40033).

So far, Ive used this for many trips covering several thousand miles. It continues to perform its intended purpose. After a year of use much more of the chrome plating has wornpeeled off. The issue is not how this hitch ball appears, its that the pieces of chrome that are wornpeeled off accelerate the wear on the ball AND the inside of my trailer ball hitch receiver.

Needed an extended ball mount for my new Jeep in order for the utility trailer tongue to clear the spare tire. Item is exactly as described on site and arrived earlier than expected.
etrailer has always given me great customer service. It is my go to place for all towing and trailer needs.

The 1” rise gave me the perfect height to level my trailer that was not possible with any combination of receivers and balls. I tow an enclosed cargo trailer 10,000 miles per year, some of it on gravel or minimally maintained roads. If the load is not level, the cargo tends to migrate forward or aft, no matter wow well it is secured. This can make the load dangerously balanced. This ball makes possible perfectly matched height between my truck and trailer. I really wanted to give this item the perfect five star rating. The only flaw is how easy it has rusted. It does not affect its function, but too easily rusted is a flaw (in my opinion). Otherwise, I wholeheartedly recommend this product.

Rust can be troublesome no matter when it occurs. You will want to grease the ball every now and again to help protect. A multi purpose grease like part # L11316 will do the trick.

In follow up to my review I would like to recommend that The company start making these out of stainless steel. I just bought a new 1 rise hitch ball and it is the third one I have bought over the last three years because they rust up so badly. I have tried the Reese hitch ball grease and plastic covers however by the end of winter when I am ready to get the boat and trailer out for the summer the hitch ball is so rusted I cant even wire brush it off. I really like these Curt hitch balls for their 1 rise which levels my trailer nicely but it is a pain to replace them every year. This last one got so rusted I had to use a reciprocating saw to get it off the hitch. In follow up to my review I would like to recommend that The company start making these out of stainless steel. Curt brand 2 inch hitch ball with 1 inch rise and 1 inch diameter threaded shaft. The picture shows a dull finish but it was bright chrome. Excellent quality. Fast shipping from etrailer as usual. A return customer.

We purposely dull the finish so we can photograph the ball. If we didnt do so, the glare from the cameras flash would make it hard to make out any detail on the trailer ball.

This ball has held up well after a year of service. I tow a 3500 lb boat once or twice a week year round. The trip is roughly 100 miles round trip so this ball has some miles on it.

It’s still getting the job done.

by:

I used this in combination with a 7" Rise, 8" Drop - 15-1/4" Long Brophy ball mount on the front hitch of my 2013 F 150 to get the right height for my trailers.
This is a good way to fine tune the correct trailer tongue height.

by:

Fast delivery and AUTHENTIC Curt product. Thx etrailer!

by:

I haven’t towed my trailer with new ball yet, so only 4 stars. Mounted on my hitch and appears to be sturdy. Only complaint is that there is no flat edge on ball side to get a wrench to grip. Had to use a channel lock straight jaw wrench to grip. My old ball has an edge so you can get a wrench on the nut and also ball side. Hope that makes sense.

by:

Received as described. I couldn't find a mount that gave me the right rise, but the extra 1" rise with this ball worked well for me.
Nice chrome finish and looks solid. Only complaint I have, and I consider it a BIG complaint, is the lack of "flats" so you can hold the ball with a large wrench and torque the nut if you have the correct range torque wrench. Otherwise, you have to wrap the ball with duct tape or ? and clamp in a vice ? Ridiculous to make a customer do that! Being new to towing, I never gave it a thought when I bought this ball. I first called Autozone and they did have a wrench that went up to 250 ft/lb and a vice and said to stop by. Luckily, I thought of my local U-Haul and they made it easy by torqueing the ball with their impact gun. I never thought about an impact gun. Much easier. I'd give 5 stars except for the lack of flats.
PLEASE, all ball makers, this is the 21st century. Put flats on every ball. Us customers will appreciate it!

by:

I've been struggling trying to get my trailer leveled and still be able to use the jack to get the tounge off the ball. I either had to put up with having to manually lift the tounge the final inch or use a receiver that's too high. I found this ball on etrailer that is one inch higher than a standard ball. It eliminated my problem (and gave my back a break). They have one with a two inch extension also. Someone was smart enough to figure this out and etrailer sells it. Two thumbs up for etrailer.

by:

I needed additional height at my hitch to utilize my trailer jack . This solved my problem. Quality is good and my back thanks you . I no longer need to lift my trailer tongue just to engage the jack .

by:

Got a new truck. My boat trailer is low. At times, I had a difficult time swinging the front trailer wheel up and back after hooking boat to the truck when the trailer was on soft ground. This 1 inch riser ball solved my problem.

by:

The photo does not do the product justice. High chrome finish matches my new aluminum hitch perfectly.

etrailer.com is the only choice! Cheap shipping and follow-up at every step makes this the go-to trailer site on the web.

This made it possible to get my hitch to the correct height for my trailer. I needed this quickly in order to haul the trailer across state to meet a deadline. etrailer.com did a great job in delivering the right hitch ball in time.

by:

The perfect method to raise the trailer tongue for level, while keeping the tow vehicle unchanged.

by:

This ball is the perfect way to add clearance and height to my travel trailer ball mount.

by:

Having trouble lowering the wheel at some sites - wouldn't clear the ground. Needed the hitch ball just a bit higher. This was the perfect solution. Arrived promptly and item was exactly what I needed.

by:

Product as described. Allows me to tow my trailer at precisely the right height as I use it with a 2 inch drop ball mount to make it effectively a 1 inch drop.

by:

This ball is exactly as advertised and the delivery was faster than I expected. I needed a heavier weight rated ball for my weight distribution hitch and finding this one with the 1 inch rise was just what I needed. Thanks e-trailer for great selection and service.

  • Does a Long Ball Mount Reduce my Hitches Capacity
When using a ball mount like the Curt Ball Mount part # D-26 it will not have any effect on the tongue weight rating of your hitch. When using a direct connect type extended ball mount there are no issues. This only comes into play when using an extender like the Curt Hitch Extender for 2" Hitch Receivers part # C45791 or others like it. In this case it drops the weight rating of your hitch by 50%.

I went out to our warehouse to take a look at the Curt 2" Hitch Ball # C40004 that you referenced and I measured a height of 2-3/4" from the mounting base to the top of the ball. I have attached an image to assist. If this doesn't provide the height you need we also have the 2" ball available with an additional 1" rise with part # C40033 or an additional 2" rise with # C40034. These rise measurements would be added to the 2-3/4" height mentioned above.

It is always important to keep your trailer level when hitched to your tow vehicle and the two simplest ways to accomplish this are either a high-rise hitch ball such as the two you reviewed, parts # C40033 and # C40034, or a ball mount with the amount of rise you need. Either option will work. The hitch balls you referenced are shown in the linked photo; I have added the dimension above the mounting surface for each ball.
