Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Self-Adjusting Brakes Don't Require Routine Maintenance

With standard electric brake assemblies, you need to manually adjust them every now and then to make sure you're getting the shortest stopping distance every time you tow.

A trailer drum brake with a red callout shows the location of a tension cable and pulley on a self-adjusting trailer brake.

With self-adjusting brakes, though, you'll always have peak stopping power - simple as that! As the brake pads wear over time, a tensioning cable will automatically keep the pads in alignment so they'll consistently make contact with your drum when you brake. You won't have to do tedious manual adjustments anymore.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

Dexter invests a lot of resources to ensure that these brakes meet the requirements for certification set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). Basically, a CSA certification tells you that these trailer brakes are well built and safe for use on the road.

How to Break In New Brakes

Once you get these brakes installed, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

After doing my homework on what I needed for my Grand Design 230 RL finding the original equiptment replacement parts was essential. After much time on the internet E Trailer had what I needed. I was taken back by the pricing after my search showed some less expensive replacements of the not OE quality. Upon receipt of my purchase I see why the price. Very high quality. Happy me.

by:

Easy to install and have been good reliable brakes for several trips so far. Although, extremely expensive. At over 3 times the cost of the next size down, seemed excessive, but if that’s the size you need you have no choice.

by:

Great service. Got everything fast and complete. Great product and service.

by:

It took awhile to get the correct part numbers, but when done, the product installed nicely! Highly recommended.

  • How To Find Braking Assemblies For 2003 Dutchmen Travel Trailer Model 28BH-SSL
There are not normally markings on the brake assemblies themselves to tell you what size you need; however, there is a way to find out which size brake assemblies you need. You want to measure your hub diameter and depth using the diagram I have attached. You also want to find out if the trailer has electric or hydraulic brake assemblies. To find out which capacity of brake you need you want to check the axle for the axle capacity which is normally stamped into the metal or on a sticker. From...

  • Recommended Self-Adjusting Electric Trailer Brakes For 7000lb Axle
I would be happy to recommend the correct self adjusting electric trailer brakes for your 7000lb axle, but I recommend double checking that your drum is 10" x 2-1/4" since 7000lb axles typically have 12" brakes. I included a diagram of how to measure the diameter and depth of your drums. If you do have 10" brakes then the best option we have is the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 4.4K # K23-478-479 which mount to a 4 bolt brake mounting...

I have a solution for you, but we do not have a self adjusting brake assembly like the # K23-478-479 available in a 10" x 1-1/2" brake. Instead, you can use the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,000 lbs # K23-472-473-00, which is 1-1/2" wide and mounts to a 4 bolt flange. These assemblies don't come with mounting hardware included, but you can use the # BRKH10B to replace your old mounting hardware.

The Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Right Hand - 3,500 lbs # AKEBRK-35R-SA and Left Hand # AKEBRK-35L-SA may be a fit for your 2016 Heartland Mallard M32 though you do need to ensure you have the correct weight capacity, drum size and brake mounting flange. However, since you referenced a part number for brakes that fit trailers for axles before 2009, you may be talking about a kit from Dexter for 4,400 lb axles. You can manually adjust self adjusting brakes like the part # K23-478-479 that you referenced. You basically just use the access port on the back of the assembly to move the star wheel to the desired tightness. The linkage for the self-adjusting hardware will partially obstruct access but it is possible to get in there far enough to make the adjustment as I've done it before. • Can 2013 Forest River XLR 27HFS Toy Hauler W/ 4400lb Axle Use 3500lb Brake Assemblies?
We have exactly what you are looking for! Since your 2013 Forest River XLR 27HFS toy hauler has a 4400lb axle instead of a 3500lb axle you would not want to go with 3500lb braking assemblies. The reason for this is the strength of the magnet will be less and you will have less braking power. • Replacement Brake Assemblies for 4400 lb Axles on 2013 Keystone Outback TT
From what I've been able to determine, your axle is a AL/KO 4400 lb axle, which would use a 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assembly. Dexter offers a set of self adjusting brake assemblies, part # K23-478-479 that would be compatible, but I'd like you to measure the bolt hole spacing of your brake mounting flanges, just to be sure. If the top holes are 2-7/8 inches apart and the bottom are 3-1/4 inches apart as shown in the provided photo, then the # K23-478-479 would work for you.
