Change Settings with User-Friendly Controls

Tekonsha Braken-evn brake controller LED display and buttons

The controls on the BRAKE-EVN are elegantly simple and user-friendly. Use the clearly-marked push-buttons to change the level of gain or boost. Gain lets you set the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. Typically, the gain (also known as output) is only readjusted when you experience changing road conditions or if the weight of your trailer changes.

The Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN also features a large LED display that's easy to see so you can check on your current gain setting with a glance, as well as diagnostic information.

Power Boost for Heavy-Duty Towing

The boost setting controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the maximum braking level. You can adjust this when you're towing heavy loads and you need more umph to bring your trailer to a stop. Your tow vehicle doesn't need that much power to brake in time, but your heavy trailer does.

Depending on the level of boost, your trailer brakes can start at either 13 percent or 25 percent of the set braking output. What this means is that, instead of starting at 0, the brakes will start at 25 percent and get to 100 percent sooner. This keeps the trailer from pushing your tow vehicle forward.

If your trailer weighs less than your tow vehicle, no boost is needed. But, if you want your trailer to lead the braking, you can select level B1.

Boost Levels:

Approximate Gross Trailer Weight Boost Level Increase in Initial Power Output
Less than tow vehicle GVW B1 13%
Equal to tow vehicle GVW B1 or B2 13% or 25%
Up to 25% more than tow vehicle GVW B2 or B3* 25%
Up to 40% more than tow vehicle GVW B3* 25%

*Both B2 and B3 offer a 25-percent boost in initial power. But the braking curve for B3 is more aggressive than that of B2. This means that, even though you will start out with the same intensity when using these boost levels, you will get an overall more aggressive braking experience with the higher level. So if you use B3, you will reach maximum braking sooner than if you use B2.

To adjust the boost, use the blue push-buttons on the top of the BRAKE-EVN.

Automatic Leveling and Simple Installation

The self-leveling feature of the BRAKE-EVN ensures that the brake controller continues to function even as you drive up steep hills or through the mountains. You can mount it at any vertical angle, and the controller will level itself automatically. But keep in mind that the BRAKE-EVN must be horizontally level and parallel with the direction of travel to work correctly.

The included wiring harness plugs into the BRAKE-EVN at one end and then into the factory port on your vehicle at the other. No need to cut and splice any wires!

Note: See etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake-control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Proportional Braking

What is proportional Braking

The Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

The BRAKE-EVN uses an internal inertia sensor to detect how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to slow at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller: The Breakdown

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. And today, we're gonna take a look at this Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN proportional, trailer brake controller for one to four axles. Now, this brake controller activates your trailer brakes in proportion to your vehicle's braking action. It automatically adjust your trailer's braking based on the deceleration of your tow vehicle. And it activates immediately.

There's no pausing like with time delayed brake controllers. This controller will work with trailers up to four axles or eight brake assemblies. And it is designed for use with electric brakes only. Now, it automatically levels. The internal sensor detects deceleration even if the controller is not mounted level.

And it can be mounted at angles between -20 degrees and 70 degrees in the vertical plane. The boost setting is going to let you adjust the aggressiveness with which the brakes are activated. You can get full power output faster by pressing the plus button, as you see right here, to increase that activation speed, or achieve smoother braking by pressing the minus button that you see there to supply power gradually. This also has a built-in slide bar manual override. Now, this features an easy to read LED display to keep you informed of your trailer's braking.

The display is gonna show the gain setting when the control is activated. And it can also be used to check for connectivity with your trailer to determine your boost setting and to troubleshoot. It is short circuit protected. And let me pull out my ruler here just to give you an idea of its size. The overall width, we are sitting right at 2 3/4 inches wide.

And then the overall length, it's probably better to measure this way. I'm trying to measure the longest points of this brake controller. We're sitting pretty close to 4 1/4 inches long. Try it up here a little bit. Yeah, about 4 1/4 inches long. And then the thickness or the height, however you'd like to describe it, we are sitting right at an inch thick or an inch tall. Now, this is gonna be a quick and easy installation. The mounting bracket, as you can see here, and the hardware to attach the bracket to your controller and the bracket to your vehicle, that is all included. A plug-in vehicle specific brake controller adapter, which is sold separately, can be used for certain applications to reduce installation time. It is important to note that if a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, one of the following will be required. And I have that on your screen there for you. A 20 amp circuit breaker for two to four brake applications, or a 30 amp circuit breaker for two to four, I'm sorry, for six to eight brake applications. And you see those item numbers for those circuit breakers on your screen. Also, I would like to mention that if you are in need of a seven-way plug at the back of your vehicle, check out etrailer.com's exclusive seven and four-way brake control installation kit. The item number for that is on the screen as well. Now, this does have a limited lifetime warranty. And that's gonna conclude our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me..

  • Is There a Trailer Brake Controller Plug On a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL
Yes, there is a trailer brake controller plug on a 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee WL. In order to utilize this you'll need a trailer brake controller like the Tekonsha BRAKE-EVN Trailer Brake Controller part # TK63VR and an adapter harness like the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # TK93VR which all makes for a plug-in-play installation. • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Assemblies that Are New But Not Strong
Since you mentioned that your brakes are brand new it's very likely you have a set of self-adjusting brake assemblies that just haven't adjusted fully to the point of activating strongly. This is a very common problem actually and has a very easy solution. What you'll want to do is find somewhere you can tow your trailer slowly like an empty parking lot and the manual override lever of the brake controller several times. Each time you apply the override the assemblies will tighten slightly...

If you aren't seeing a factory port under the dash you probably don't have one. You would need the factory plug along with a controller module behind the rear seat, and some lack the controller module even with the plug. On top of that, it looks like if you have these you also need the dealer to put in a code to allow the controller to work. What...

  • Comparison of Tekonsha Prodigy P3 and Primus IQ Brake Controllers
Although the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 and Primus IQ # TK90160 electric brake controllers are very similar they do have some key differences as well. For one the P3 is designed to work with electric and electric over hydraulic brake systems. The Primus IQ will work with electric brakes. Also the Primus IQ will operate a maximum of 3 axles and the P3 will work with 4. The display on the P3 is more informational as opposed to only showing one feature at a time. Take a look at the two...

  • Brake Controller Plug Location on 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The factory brake controller connector on your 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is located under the dash behind the hood latch, as shown in the provided photo. Keep in mind, the connector will only be there if the vehicle has the factory tow package which includes the 7-way trailer connector at the rear bumper. If you have the tow package, to install the Tekonsha # TK90160 Primus brake controller on your 2021 Grand Cherokee you'll need the Tekonsha # TK93VR wiring harness. One end plugs into...

  • Parts Needed to Add a Brake Controller on a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee With or Without the Tow Package
Since you don't have the trailer towing package on your 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee you do need to start off by installing a 4-Way connector. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118425 as we have found Tekonsha to be one of the most reliable wiring companies that we carry. To have 7-Way and 4-Way connectors on your Jeep you also need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This connects to the T-One and give you both connections that you need. It also includes everything you need for the 7-Way to...

  • Parts Needed to add Electric Trailer Brakes to 1990 Skamper 190c
You are able to install an electric braking system on your trailer. The parts needed are going to be determined by the axle that your camper is equipped with. From what I can tell from your picture, it looks like this is a 4 lug axle which is going to likely mean you have a 2,000-lb axle with a 1-3/4" diameter. In order to verify that is correct you will need to confirm that the Inner and Outer bearings on your trailer wheel hubs match L44649. You can verify this once you've taken it apart...

  • Brake Controller Fit and Compatibility for a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee with Factory 7-Way
Yes the Hayes Blackbird Brake Controller HA81726 will work for your 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, but you will need to use the adapter # HA81796-HBC to plug into your vehicles wiring. Can I offer one bit of advice? Instead of going with a Time Delayed Brake Controller I would instead suggest a Proportional Controller like the P2 # 90885 with adapter # 3045-P. The P2 is a proportional brake controller which means it senses how the tow vehicle is slowing or stopping and applies the trailer's...

  • Parts Needed To Install Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller in 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer
The Plug-In Wiring Adapter # TK93VR will allow you to connect your Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller # 90885 to your 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. We do have the Replacement Mounts # 7686 & # P7685 should you decide to leave the mounting bracket in your Escalade or they become lost or damaged. The electrical connection for the controller can be hard to find under the dash. I have included a installation video we did for the P3 # 90195 near the bottom of the page you can watch to...

  • Plug-In Wire Harness For A Redarc Brake Controller In A 2022 Jeep Wagoneer
Redarc doesn't make a plug-in wire harness for your 2022 Jeep Wagoneer, but they do make an adapter # 331-TPH-017 to connect to a Tekonsha plug-in wire harness like part # TK93VR so that you won't have to splice-in any wires to install your brake controller.

  • Parts Needed To Install Tekonsha Prodigy P2 In 2022 Jeep Wagoneer
You actually don't need to splice anything to be able to install your Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 into your new 2022 Jeep Wagoneer. You'll just need to get the Tekonsha adapter # TK93VR which will plug into the back of your P2, and then into the factory installed brake controller port underneath the dash. This can be kind of tricky to find, but it's normally taped up to other wiring and will be the only one that matches the end of this harness.

The Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers 3045-P you're referring to has actually been discontinued and replaced by the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers # TK93VR. With that said, the new # TK93VR harness will work with your 2023 Wagoneer as well as your Tekonsha Voyager brake controller.

  • Recommended Brake Controller For A 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe
As far as I can confirm there is not a plug-in port available for a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. You can try reaching out to Jeep/Mopar but I can't find anything from them stating that there is a plug-in option so you'll have to go with a splice in option. For this I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR along with the Universal Wiring Harness # RED69FR. This brake controller has the smallest footprint on the market for more mounting versatility and a cleaner,...

  • Does A 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Trailhawk Have A Plug-In Brake Controller Port
There currently aren't any listings showing the 4xe models having a tow package that includes a plug-in port for a brake controller so at this time the only available option would be a splice-in wire harness. For a 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe I still recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED24FR along with the Universal Wiring Harness # RED69FR because it has the smallest footprint on the market for more mounting versatility and a cleaner, factory look. The wire harness...

  • What is Needed For Brake Controller on 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee
There are a couple things you'll need in order to add a trailer brake controller to your 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I'm going to assume you do not have the wiring, so you'll need to add a 7-way to your Jeep to control the trailer brakes. For that you'll need the following: - T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 7-Way and 4-Pole Flat Connectors # C55774 Please note you may need to see a local Jeep dealer to activate the tow package wiring circuit if the seller had...
