Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Brake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the connector behind your vehicle's dashboard. To reach the connector, first locate the notch in the access panel in the center of the dash, near the passenger side. Using a trim panel puller, carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove the panel. You will find the mating connector behind this portion of your dashboard.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha Brake Controller 3034-P Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Tekonsha Plug In Wiring Adapter for electric brake controllers. The wiring adapter is going to ease installation of your electric brake controller. The custom connector end, which would be this end right here, this is going to plug into the built in port behind the dash of your vehicle. The other end plugs into the back of your electric brake controller. They're going to snap lock together for a nice, tight, secure fit. The harness itself, from the back of one plug to the back of the other, we're looking at a measurement of 29 inches. From plug end to plug end, we're looking at about 31 1/2 inches.

The wiring is going to be kept together by a protective mesh material. It keeps all the wires safe and secure and contained. This is compatible with time delayed brake controllers, like Draw Tite Activator One, Activator Two, the Activator Three and the Tekonsha Power Track. It's also compatible with proportional brake controllers, like the Tekonsha Prodigy, the Tekonsha P2, and the P3, and the Tekonsha Promise IQ and the Tekonsha Voyager. This adapter requires no hard wiring. It's designed to plug in directly to your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent.

That way, you can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away. That's going to do it for today's look at the Tekonsha Plug In Wiring Adapter for electric brake controllers.

I used this adapter harness to install a P-3 brake controller on our 2018 E-450 based Jayco motor home. Even though it is not listed as applicable to the model year 2018 E-450, it fits and works perfectly. Saves lots of work hardwiring a controller and is a very good buy for the money. Highly recommended. 552617

RE: Installing Brake Controller on 2011 E450 Coachmen Motor Home with prewired 7-way Trailer Connector. Rose at etrailer, verified that it was prewired and the plug for the wiring adaptor to the controller was behind the access panel for factory installed brake controller option in the dash. Rose took my order for the Tekonsha P2 brake controller #90885 and plug-in wiring adaptor #3034-P, Feb 2d , it was shipped same day and it was received in timely manor. It was a review on etrailer's site that I read that directed me to them and Rose was very helpful with installation and product details. 173432

Great brake controller! I installed this unit in my 2016 Ford F250 4x4 in just over 30 minutes. Of course, I spent a little time (about an hour or so) in advance on the etrailer website researching how to install this controller. After watching a few videos and reading a few detailed reviews I was ready to go. I did order a plastic trim removal tool set on [site] prior to this installation. ** NOTE to etrailer: Think about offering a set of trim removal tools for sale to your customers - very important!**. I figured the $25.00 spent on the trim removal tool set would ensure no damage to the interior of my new truck and I was right. This is my second or third brake controller purchased from etrailer. Fast shipping and great products! Thank you!! 351194

Good news, Joe! We do sell trim removal tools and for less than you paid on the other site! They may be found at the following link:

Perfect fit for our Minnie Winnie (on the 2016 Ford E450 chassis). The cable is a perfect fit, and the installation electrically is a breeze. Where to mechanically mount our controller is another story. Taking out the accessory plate was also a slight challenge, the existing battery boost switch is a bit large. The switch wants to stay in the dash as the switch cutout on the dash is a bit too small, it holds the assembly in place loosely on the dash. It requires a bit of moving the trim plate, and the metal backing plate behind it back and forth, up and down to break the switch mounting tabs free from the dash after removing the two trim screws. Once the trim plate has been removed, the factory controller cable is in plain view and is the 3034-P snaps right on. Since my controller travels between the Minnie and another vehicle, I didn't want to do a permanent installation, thus there is no clean final installation picture shown. There is room for a controller to the right of the existing switch (if I were to make a rectangular cutout in the trim plate, but I may end up just using a Velcro attachment of the controller bracket to the top of the dash. Under dash mount is not an option as you couldn't see the controller or easily reach its controls. 400165

I had a hard time figuring out were the plug on the truck was, I have a built in brake controller and the cable was plugged into it. I had a hare time getting the old one out to get to the plug, in fact I broke it getting it out, I could have taken the uplift switches out to get to it, I had to take them out to get the factory controller out. I was able to repair the factory unit and get back in but it took an extra 30 minutes that was not needed. Once I got it out it was real easy. If anyone else has a 2014 F350 with factory controller you do not need to remove the controller just the switches on the right side to unplug the cable which is plugged in to the right side of the controller. 370618

While researching install help to put a trailer brake controller on my RV, I learned from etrailer.com that my rig was already wired for a controller from the factory and only needed a 3034-P wiring harness. What a relief to find out I didn't need to hard wire the controller like I had in previous vehicles! The part was very reasonably priced, and got here in just a few days (standard shipping). Thank you, etrailer! 604669

The 3034-P cable was the correct cable to interface the Tekonsha P3 Brake Controller with my 2018 Jayco Class C 29MV on a Ford E-450 Superduty Chassis. I verified this with the techs at Tekonsha. The previously ordered 3036-P cable did NOT work. When connected the RV would crank but would not start, and the P3 had no indication of power. The 3034-P cable did the trick. The RV starts, the P3 has power, and after a test drive today I can report the P3 is activating my trailer brakes properly. 585674
