Troubleshooting Brake Controller with E.R. Error Code
Updated 08/28/2024 | Published 08/29/2024 >
Question:
My Reese controller just threw the E.r code. When unplugging and plugging back in, it shows a P.L code, then goes to the normal N.C flashing code then goes to the E.r code. Are you saying the E.r code is always a bad controller? Also, my Reese appears identical to the Tekonsha 8508220 (TK63VR your code?) in every single way, except the name. You stated the Tekonsha is very reliable so they are not the same? My Reese was approx. 2 years old.

Hey Rich, so the ER code of your Reese # TK63VR does indicate it is bad unfortunately. Reese and Tekonsha are made by the same company which is why the two look similar but are branded different. This is normally very reliable brake controller but sometimes things still do end up failing. If you wanted to upgrade to something that is widely considered to have the best reputation for reliability the P2 part # 90885 would be a great upgrade that will use same plug as what you have now so the wiring portion would be super simple.

Thank you for the response. I was considering the P3 but didn't know what plug configuration it uses. What are quality and performance differences between P2 and P3? We only tow a trailer that's about 4500lbs so I'm sure the P2 would be adequate.
