Parts Needed to add Electric Trailer Brakes to 1990 Skamper 190c

Question:

Hi, I have a 1990 Skamper single axle pop up camper, model 190c. Can i install electric brakes on it? If yes can you recommend the part # please?

You are able to install an electric braking system on your trailer. The parts needed are going to be determined by the axle that your camper is equipped with. From what I can tell from your picture, it looks like this is a 4 lug axle which is going to likely mean you have a 2,000-lb axle with a 1-3/4" diameter. In order to verify that is correct you will need to confirm that the Inner and Outer bearings on your trailer wheel hubs match L44649. You can verify this once you've taken it apart and checked the marking on the face of the bearings. If the numbers on your bearings DO NOT match that, please let me know what bearings your trailer uses and I can give you a new parts list; if they do match the L44649 the following parts are needed for replacement:

-Flange # 4-34 (if the axle is not already equipped with one)
-Brake Assemblies L/R # AKEBRK-2
-Hub and Drum # 8-173-16UC3
-Brakeaway Kit # 50-85-313
-Brake Controller # TK90160
-Brake Controller Wiring Adapter # TK93VR (if your Durango is factory wired with a tow package) If you don't have the factory towing package you will need part # 3020-P (wiring adapter for Brake Controller)
-7 way wiring adapter for trailer # ET7WK (required to work with Brake Controller and new electric trailer brakes)
-7 way wiring adapter for vehicle # PK11898

You also may want some extra 10 Gauge wiring #10-1-1 which is sold by the foot, some butt connectors # 05732-2 and ring terminals # DW05705-1

With all of these parts you will be able to add an electric braking system to your 1990 Skamper 190c.

I have the exact same camper and desire. I can confirm the axle is 2,000#, but I would like a parking brake option. I have not found a brake system compatible with 2,000# axles also having a parking feature. I feel it would be conducive for me when the camper is popped up to have the brake engaged in a parking fashion. Is there an alternative solution you could suggest? I am also wondering about a 7-pin wiring harness indicating the 12 volt black wire being connected to an additional battery on the trailer itself rather than relying on the vehicle battery. Is this a requirement? If so, could I set up additional wiring to also charge the trailer battery by means of the vehicle’s alternator during tow so to prevent draining the camper’s (trailer’s) battery? I am planning to install the complete set up listed above so to tow with my 2017 S60 Volvo once the OEM hitch system comes in (2000 F-150 will be my stand in until then).

@KyleM Hey Kyle, thanks for reaching out. We do have the Dexter Electric Trailer Brakes # K23-103-104-00 which are parking brake ready and will fit a 2,000 lb axle. With that I suggest using the hubs # 8-173-16UC3 which use the # L44649 (1.063" inner diameter) inner and outer bearings. You will also need the Dexter Breakaway and Parking Kit for Drum Brakes # T2385200. To answer your second question, yes, you can definitely run a charge line from the 7-way to a battery on the trailer. This way the battery will be charged by the vehicles alternator when you are towing. This practice is fairly common for trailers with batteries. The Roadmaster Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25 can be used for this. Its basically just wire, connectors and a circuit breaker. Feel free to reach out if you need anything else.
