Recommended Replacement Axle for a Camper Trailer

Updated 10/30/2025 | Published 02/11/2025

Question:

Hello, I had a question about hub length and safety. My current camper trailer has a hub length of 73 in with a 4 lug hub. Also, 55-in spring center measurement. I am interested in going up to either an 85 in or 89-in hub face and keeping the 55-in spring Center and also a five lug hub for potentially a larger tire size. I currently am using 12-in wheels. Im wondering if the increase of about 16 in would offer more stability, less stability... Or maybe its not safe at all. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing your reply.

Hey Brian, to go with a longer axle setup you can use the Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # e65GR. This axle has a 5 bolt pattern, an 89" hub face measurement, but a 74" spring seat measurement. Since your spring seats are at 55" you'd need to cut off these ones and re-weld them at 55" to match your spring seats.

What kind of trailer do you have? Also, If there is anything else you need help with, please feel free to let me know!

Hey Brian, how did things go with the 89‑inch axle setup you were considering for your camper trailer? Were you able to re‑weld the spring seats to match your 55‑inch spacing? Your update could make it easier for others thinking about a similar upgrade.
