Replacement For Mobile Home Axle on Trailer
Updated 12/22/2025 | Published 10/30/2024 >
Question:
I need to replace some bearings, races and grease seals for a set of trailer wheels but the part numbers are not legible. This is for a home-made boat cradle and I suspect the axle assemblies are from a mobile home. The wheels are 14.5 rims that bolt onto a spider-type wheel like a large truck, and the axle is 1 in diameter at the threaded part. Is that enough information to determine parts?

Hey Chris,
I'll just be straight here - you'll need a replacement axle. While that's not enough info to determine bearings (that actually requires specific measurements at three different locations on your spindle down to the thousandth of an inch), it was enough to determine a new axle is necessary. There are a couple things that give it away, which are the type and size of wheels, as well as how you described them. Those are for a mobile home, and mobile home axles are a one-time use.
So a new axle is needed, and in order to choose the correct replacement you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center; I have added a link below to a video which walks you through how to measure. The other thing you need to know is the weight capacity of the axle you need, which should match or exceed the GVWR of your trailer.
For example, the Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # e65GR has a 3,500 lb capacity and measures 89 inches from hub face to hub face and 74 inches from spring center to spring center.
I've added a link below to our selection of axles for you which you can filter through by length.

Hey Chris, what ended up happening with the axle replacement for your boat cradle? Were you able to measure the hub face and spring center distances to find the right fit? Your update could make it easier for others working with older mobile home axles.
