Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

E-Z Lube Spindles Make Lubrication Simple

The E-Z Lube spindles on this axle are meant to work with E-Z Lube-compatible hubs to make lubricating your bearings quick and easy. Each E-Z Lube spindle has a zerk fitting on the end. And every E-Z Lube hub comes with a grease cap that has an easy-to-remove rubber plug. Just pop out the plug on the cap to access the zerk on the spindle. When you inject grease into the zerk with a grease gun, the grease will flow to both the inner and outer bearings of the hub, lubricating the bearings and forcing out old, ineffective grease. Once you see new grease beginning to be pushed out, you know that your bearings are fully lubricated. This means that you can lubricate the bearings without the mess of taking apart the entire assembly.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

The whole staff is top notch at etrailer, and easy to get ahold on the phone. Dexter is a quality product and etrailer offers it at a fair price. The only negative I can share is the plastic plugs they ship in the hubs folded the excluder lip backwards on the inboard hub seal. It took a little bit of working by hand to fix it. It's a blind install so can't see if it went on right. Would be nice to see a better plug used there or maybe just a piece of tape over it. That's on dexter though, not etrailer.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

Note I have not received any compensation for this review. I do reviews because I use other people's reviews and want to return the favor.
I wanted the largest axle that fits the wheels for my rv trailer and that is the 6000# axle, replacing a 4400# axle. FYI, I can upgrade the brakes to 7000# with different magnets but not sure the tires have that much traction. Received the parts on time and in good shape, even though the ups guy dropped the axle on concrete. Wish I wasn’t home to see that. After I placed the order there was some communications with etrailer and they delivered as promised! I have placed orders since then and will keep ordering due to continued good service.
The axle came with studs pressed in but I knocked them out and used nuts/bolts to bolt on the brake plate assemblies.
I cut off the spring seats and welded on new ones in the needed location, as planned. I could have ordered the axle with the spring seats where I needed them but I was in a hurry and figured this way was faster. And etrailer had the best price and had good service on many prior purchases.
Installed the axle and adjusted the brakes. Note, I soldered the wiring connections and sealed.
Performed a break in procedure and took the trailer on a long trip. During the trip the brakes started getting grabby and I had to dial back the trailer brakes. Once home, I adjusted the brakes and it took quite a bit of adjustment. From now on I will be prepared to adjust the brakes during trips. I expect the brakes to work better on the next trip. Honestly, this is the first trailer I have owned with brakes and am not used to needing to adjusting brakes.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I ordered these August 1st and they just arrived 4 1/2 months later. I don't blame Etrailer for that. It's just the way things were with supply since then. Etrailer kept me updated as things changed. Since I live in Maine and will have to install them outside I won't be doing it until spring. I have checked everything over though and the quality looks excellent. I have never had any problem with anything from Etrailer. This package deal was at a great price and includes everything except the U bolt mounting kit which I bought separately.

I finally got to finish the trailer in the spring of 2022 and install these axels and brakes. Perfect fit and Im very happy with the results.

Joann was very knowledgeable and very helpful.. my trailer axle and parts arrived on time and everything was in order..it doesn’t get any easier..

Comments
The wire that Dexter uses to run through the axles to connect to the brakes is not heavy enough. The brakes are wired with number 16 wire and they run 18 which is basically speaker wire through the axle and it burns through at the connection every time I dont understand why they run such cheap wire through the axle

The product is all I could have asked for. The package was complete in that all fasteners, were included along with the proper lubrication. Each item was made/machined well and went together without any problem. After the first year no problems, all bolts, nuts, and fittings are tight and working well. If need be I will buy from E-Trailor again.

No problems or issues with quality. Assembly went well. The price was fair and shipment was packaged excellently. Freight was a little slow, possibly due to Covid or product shortage and across nation travel.
No problems with assembly due to attached paperwork.
Very good results.
Thank You.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I purchased this to replace a bent idler axle on an older Pequea utility trailer. I figured it made sense to upgrade to an axle with brakes while I was at it - and I was rewiring the trailer anyway so adding brake wires was no big deal as part of that project.

Installation was simple. I was a little worried about assembling the brakes and bearings just because I hadn't done it before, but I watched some videos and it was very easy. I've put around 1000 miles on it in the year I've had it and it's held up great so far.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I bought two of these axles to replace 2 off brand ones that needed brakes, hubs and bearings. These were only slightly more expensive, and got me to a name brand. The kit came with actually extra axle nuts, and you have to assemble the brakes and hubs yourself, which was no problem. I had two slight issues. The first was that one of the brake wires that travels through the axle had a tiny bit of damage, exposing the actual copper wire itself, however there was plenty of wire left to fix this. But it would definitely be a failure down the road if I didn't see it when installing. The second problem I had was more of a shipping issue. They include a tube of grease in the box that has both hubs and breaks in it, the plastic cap of the grease tube opened up, and coated everything and damaged the box to the point that it literally opened up on the poor UPS carrier at my door, dumping the contents on the ground, however shipping issues aren't the main focus of the review, and it only happened to one, not the other axle's box. Thankfully, everything I ordered is tough enough that it was not bothered. Overall, this was an excellent solution to my problem, and I called to order this to double check what I read on the site, service was great, order processed quickly! I will come back for future needs!

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

Installed a yr ago. Perfect product.
One
thing for me though....
I had to buy different fenders because I bought better tires and rims for this new axle which turned out to be slightly wider.
So the original fender would have cut into the tires.
I got everything from etrailer. Axle with brakes fully assembled, controller, fenders, wire harness, connections tires, time and more...and couldn't be happier with cust service, pricing and availability.

Great high quality axles! I installed two of these on a boat trailer with one brake and one idler hub. It was a rebuild from single to dual axles. All the parts were well organized and packaged well and free shipping- thanks etrailer! Good service and value all around. I hauled the boat about 100 miles today and it all works perfectly. A vast improvement in performance.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I purchased these axles and brakes to replace the old axles on my car hauler. Everything went smoothly with this order. I received my axle and hubs much faster than I anticipated. The parts were well packaged and everything is exactly as I ordered it. I had never installed hubs on trailer axles but after watching one of etrailer's instructional videos I had both sides of the idler axle done in less than 30 minutes. I had similar results on the axle that I put electric brakes on as well. Dexter axles with the EZ-Lube spindles are well worth the money. Bottom line I couldn't be happier with the products and service.

Review from a similar EZ Lube Axle w Brakes in Trailer Axles

I would have given you a five star, but I had to clean up the grease, the tube was squashed, and it was a mess. With all the damage to the outside container the carrier must have dropped it a few times. I believe the parts are okay, will let you know if otherwise.

  • Replacement Axles for 2017 Grand Design Reflection 29RS
What you're looking for is an 86-1/2" long replacement axle. Since you will need new hubs and drums, along with brakes, I recommend getting the # 8327816-EB. This has a 71-1/2" spring center length so you will also need to cut off the spring seats and weld on # TRSS300 to match the current 68-1/2" measurement. Grand Design does a great job listing their parts, but unfortunately they don't include the leaf spring information. You will need to measure your current leaf springs to find the...

  • Differences Between Dexter Axles item # 8327826-EB and item # 8327816-EB
The Dexter Trailer Axle item # 8327826-EB is a 6,000 lbs capacity axle. The Dexter Trailer Axle item # 8327816-EB is only rated up to 5,200 lbs. This won't matter because they both come with hubs and brakes but the item # 8327826-EB uses a outer bearing item # 15123 (1.25" inner diameter) where item # 8327816-EB uses a item # LM67048 outer bearing. Other than those two differences they are identical in every way. I recommend going with the less expensive option.

  • Replacement for Lippert 5200-lb Axle on 2006 Holiday Rambler 5th Wheel
Thank you for the information on your Lippert axle. My contact at Lippert advised that they need more information to identify your axle. The number 123322 does not correspond to their serial numbers and might be a general part number. What you want to find is a number starting with '045' or '019', or 'V000' plus more digits, or 'NV' plus six more digits. The Dexter 5200-lb trailer axles we offer have a hub face dimension of 86-1/2-inches like your Lippert axle, but the spring center spacing...

  • Can a Dexter 5,200 Lb Axle Be Replaced With a Dexter 6,000 Lb Axle
It sounds like you are asking if you can use the Dexter Trailer Axle Beam part # 8327826 to replace the axle beam included with Dexter Trailer Axle with Electric Brakes part # 8327816-EB and reuse the braking assemblies and hubs/drums. If that is the case then yes you can as the diameter of the spindle where the bearings and grease seal ride are the same. Therefore, even though they may use a different outer bearing, the diameter for the inside of the bearing where it sits on the spindle...

  • Replacement Axle For a Grand Design Imagine 2670MK With Higher Weight Capacity
We have either a 5,200LB # 8327816-EB or 6,000LB # 8327826-EB axle you will be able to use to replace your current 4,400lb axle. Both these axles have the 86-1/2" hub face spread and include hubs with electric brakes and the 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern your wheels and tires require. The brakes are the larger 12" diameter but will fit with the ST225/75R15 tires I see the Grand Design Imagine 2670M comes with. You will need to have 2 new Spring Seats # TRSS300 welded to the axle at the 68-1/2"...

  • Upgrading Underrated Axles on 31-4BH Coleman Lantern Travel Trailer
If I'm reading you correctly, your travel trailer has a GVWR of 10K, but has two 3500 axles? If that's the case, your axles are horrifically overloaded and should be upgraded. Installing 12 inch brake assemblies (which likely wouldn't work because the available 12 inch drums would use a different bearing set than a 3500 lb axle) would provide better braking, but wouldn't fix the fact that the axles are underrated. Your best course of action would be to replace your current axles with 5200...
