I bought 2 sets of 12x2 electric brake assembly for my car hauler. I was just going to replace the shoes but after remembering the difficaulty in doing drum brakes in the early days, I found it easier and less time consuming by just remove 5 bolts and connect two wires. This product came to my door with in only 3 days. Great looking product (no picture because i"m writing this after the install).
I have been back to etrailer several time for other items such as hitch shank, wheel center caps even grease caps. Great place to shop.

Brakes arrived very quickly and looked very good. One spring and adjustment rod came off during shipping, but the pieces were there and easily installed. I haven't installed them yet, but am very happy with product at this point.

I am writing this very favorable review of my online shopping experience with etrailer. Recently I had to replace the brakes, hubs, wheels and tires on my travel trailer. Please keep in mind that I am a 65 year old man without a lot of experience with online shopping. Never-the-less, I decided to give it a try in hopes of saving some money. To my surprise, etrailer made the experience very easy and painless. Before I placed my order on line, I had a question about one of the items on my shopping list, so I placed a call to them. I spoke with a very lovely and patient Customer Service Representative by the name of Michelle S. She was very helpful in answering my questions and encouraged me to call her back directly when I was ready to place my order; and so I did. During the shipping process, she kept me informed through emails the status of my order and everything arrived on time and in great shape. I truly appreciate the personalized services I received doing business with etrailer. They truly removed all of the uncertainty and nervousness of shopping online.

Unfortunately, one of the 4 brakes came with the spring and adjuster shaft on the bottom of the box. I put them back on without too much trouble but etrailer should review the product packaging in order to protect the brakes from damage. The install needs shrink tubing style crimp connectors. Mine required sizes for 16 to 18 gage and one size up for joining 3 wires where one wire crosses over thru the axel from the left to the right side. Also there are two adjuster plugs per brake so a total of 8 plugs are required for 4 brakes. Once installed they worked great.

The right and left hand brake were very easy to install and came with everything needed. The only problem after install, is that the left hand break gave off a buzzing sound while brakes were not engaged...adjusting the arm as suggested by your technicians to the electric magnet did not help...there was little engagement from magnet to drum while brake were not engaged, that i decided to go the 8k miles anyway, checking every night stop...it still has the buzzing sound and I will need to replace.

  • Which Brake Drum is Used with Dexter # 23-105 and # 23-106 Brake Assemblies
    There are hubs/drums available for the # 23-105 and # 23-106 brake assemblies. You'll want to go with a 12 x 2 drum, and you'll want to choose one that has bearing compatible with your existing spindle and a lug and bolt circle pattern that's compatible with your existing wheels. If you'd care to reply with your inner and outer bearing reference numbers and the number of lugs and the bolt circle of your wheels, I'd be happy to make specific recommendations.

    Actually, i would not recommend an electric brake assembly for a boat trailer because the finish on them is not the best for marine applications and you could run into short problems if the wiring is not sealed out from the water. It is done sometimes it just not recommended and I would use hydraulic disc brakes.   • How to Determine if A Trailer Hub/Drum or Spindle is Damaged Beyond Repair
    For the drum what you are going to want to look at is discoloration where the pads make contact with the drum and the armature surface which is where the magnet makes contact with the inside of the drum. Discoloration means that the metal is damaged and the hub and drum assembly would need to be replaced.   • Inspecting and Testing Trailer Brake Magnet and Wiring
    The magnet looks to be fine, a little dirty perhaps, but it doesn't look like the copper windings are coming through. The melted wire though indicates that there was likely a short that caused the wire to melt. A short could have been at the magnet or the wiring to the magnet. Pinched wires or frayed copper strands touching bare metal could be the cause. I have included a link to a help article that explains how to test the magnets.

    When you say it locked up to you mean the brakes locked up or the hub will not spin? If it is the brakes then I suspect that there is an electrical problem with the wiring to the brakes on that axle or the magnets themselves. Inspect the wiring and look for any exposed copper strands and fix as needed. Make sure the wiring is not pinched.     I wouldn't recommend running a different style of trailer brakes on the second axle of your trailer. It would be very difficult to get the braking action of both axles to sync up and work well together since they will be on totally different systems.   • Troubleshooting Brake Controller That Only Works with Override Lever with One Trailer
    It sounds like you have a dirty brake output pin on your truck's wiring that is preventing the controller from detecting the trailer. The manual override lever will apply voltage regardless if a trailer is connected...but using the brake pedal to activate the controller requires the controller to detect a trailer connected. Since truck works with other trailers that indicates that the problem is on the trailer side and 99 percent of the time it's a dirty connector that would cause the problem.

    It sounds like there is a short that is causing constant power draw to the brake magnets. The most likely culprit is a dirty or corroded vehicle or trailer side connector. Make sure that both are clean and free of corrosion inside where the wires attach and outside on the pins. If the truck side checks out fine then it could be the wiring to the brake magnets or the magnets themselves. Inspect the power wires to the magnets and look for pinched, frayed, or damaged wires and fix as needed....
