Video Transcript for Let’s Check Out the Brake Mounting Bolt for 12" Brake Assembly

Today we're going to review part number 7-5. This is the 3/8ths inch size brake mounting bolt for 12 inch brake assemblies. Now this brake mounting bolt is used to attach a brake assembly to your trailer. The size on this is a 3/8ths inch by 24. 3/8ths inch meaning the diameter of the bolt size right here. 24 means 24 threads per inch. Now this is a grade 5.

If you see the markings on it, there's 3 marks. That means it's a grade 5 bolt. A few measurements on this. If we do the overall length from the very top to the end, it'll be right at 1 and a quarter inches. The threaded portion is right at 1 inch. Now the head size on this, I pulled the socket that it's made to fit.

It's using a 9/16ths size socket to fit the head, which you use to tighten it down or take it off. This is also to be used with two separate products that you'll need when you install your brake assembly. One would be the lock washer. We do sell that separately. It's listed on the product page of this bolt as a related product and that's part number 38LW.

The other one would be the nut, which is part number 38N. This is the 3/8ths inch size nut and this will also be listed on the products page as a related product. This would all be used to put your brake assembly onto your trailer and just to give you an idea, the size on the nut would also be the socket size of 9/16ths. That should do it for the review on part number 7-5. This is the 3/8ths inch size brake mounting bolt for the 12 inch brake assemblies.

The axles that I ordered last year are still working out great. But even better than the parts was the service I got from etrailer. It was so great working with a company who took the time to listen to my project and help me get the right parts I needed, especially coming right off the heels of a terrible experience dealing with bad information and wrong parts from a competitor. Even with some damages in shipping, the returns/ and replacements were no hassle, with most issues being quickly resolved and not even costing me any additional downtime. As a contractor keeping a small fleet rolling, your competency and professionalism have made me a customer for life!! You guys at etrailer will be my first stop for trailer parts.

Nuts and bolts are nuts and bolts but I can report that the self-adjusting brakes have worked well on our two-thousand mile trip this summer through the mountains of Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. They stop straight and true and don't seem to fade on those long down grades like the infamous "Cabbage Hill" near Pendelton Or.

Replacing the brakes on a 50 year old FAN camper. After being assured that it had 10 inch brakes by another company"s "expert" because it has a 3500# axle, I finally received the correct 12 inch brakes from eTrailer. They arrived very quickly, and packaged well. The installation went almost as easy as the very helpful online video showed. Only difference was I had to slightly tighten the brakes to slide the hub over them, even though they are self-adjusting once in service. I have never owned or worked on a trailer before, and the installation was relatively easy. Thank you to George J for the followup email within 24 hours of delivery.

Just received my order of new backing plate assemblies and some misc small parts. Ordered on line late Sunday night, confirmed I had ordered the right parts Monday morning before shipment went out. Customer service by phone was superb and the gal I talked with was perfect. Shipment was on my porch Friday afternoon. I did open box and inspect shipment that arrived completely intact/good shape and all looked good at this point. Not sure when will get to the brakes on the trailer but will post again when the job is done. So far nothing but good to say about Etrailer.com. Regards, John.

The electric trailer brakes arrive within three days of ordering. The parts were a perfect fit. Etrailer' support is second to none! Helpful videos and live support available. The four trailer brakes were $100.00 less expensive than the nearest competitor and free shipping too!

by:

Bought these bolts just in case and was glad I did. Turns out, my backing plates had fixed studs rather than bolts, but having these on hand made reassembly a snap. Threads matched the nuts perfectly. Highly recommend.

Bought brake replacement kit for 20 ft gooseneck trailer, exact fit

by:

The whole order was perfect. I'm rebuilding the running gear on a1976 3 horse slant then remodeling the whole trailer by converting the trailer into a communications trailer for HF radio for disaster response. Front area will be living quarters. I am in our State Guard as a radio operator and also in county emergency management. This trailer will be my shelter and operating station when deployed to hurricanes and such. Since I'm spending my own funds on this, the good prices on etrailer are greatly appreciated.

Carla M. worked with me to make sure we had all the right parts for my boat trailer. I am quite happy with her help.

by:

The parts have worked out very well and have not had any problems. Thanks again for the parts and good service.

great products with very reasonable prices, quick shipping and excellent service follow-up

by:

Could not be more pleased. My set of fully assembled brakes arrived earlier than expected and were as described. The prices at Etrailer were the lowest found while shopping for the brake assemblies. Great job Etrailer!

by:

bought a brake assembly that needed fastening to the axle; these nuts, bolts and washers were just what I needed. Thanks George J.

by:

Hardware for my new brakes, word to the wise...get them when replacing your brakes...your trailer and patience will love you for it.

by:

Ordered lots of parts on Monday, received most of them by Thursday. The received parts were well packaged and undamaged. A few of the parts they didn't have in stock so they had those drop-shipped to me which should be delivered in the next couple of days.
No supplier I have ordered any parts from has such a great technical reference web site or personal customer support. Yea, Rebecca - Well Done! Yes, I'm very happy with the pricing.
Thanks for your great support and I look forward to doing business with them again. More info to follow as soon as I can get the parts installed on my trailer.

by:

It was difficult to find the proper equipment for my particular vehicle. E. Trailer was a life saver and the service was super. My service rep., Nicki K. went "out of her way" to help me. Couldn't ask for more than that!

by:

Excellent, fine thread, grade 5 bolts...I torqued to 40 ft-lbs.

by:

I have had no problems

by:

Great service. Etrailer does an excellent job of filling the orders and getting them sent. Shery was really good handling our order. Thanks again.

  • Does Brake Assembly to Brake Drum Dimension Need to be Verified When Adding Brakes to Trailer
I am not sure which exact dimension you are looking for but the good news is that if you have properly installed brake mounting flanges there would be no need to verify clearance between the brake assemblies and the drums as all of that would be positioned correctly. I attached a help article on adding brakes to a trailer for you to check out as well.

  • Are the Brakes that Come with the Dexter 6K Axle # 8327820-EB Self-Adjusting?
While we do have the self-adjusting brakes you need to purchase, the # 23-106 and # 23-105 that come with the Dexter Trailer Axle - 6K # 8327820-EB are manual adjusting. In order to have the same setup with self-adjusting brakes, you need the following parts: - Dexter Trailer Axle Beam with E-Z Lube Spindles - 89" Long - 6,000 lbs # 8327830 - Brake Mounting Bolt for 12" Brake Assembly # 7-5 - LocTite Hyper Lube # LOC54FR - Dexter 12" Hub/Drum # 8-201-5UC3-EZ - Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric...

  • Is Using Electric Brakes on a Boat Trailer Recommended
You can indeed use electric brakes on a boat trailer. At one time it wasn't a recommended practice, but then the boat manufacturers started using electric brakes on trailers and found that it works fine. I would urge you to unplug the trailer before backing it into the water, and when pulling out allowing a few minutes to drain and dry out somewhat before plugging back in. The Dexter # 23-180-181 brake assemblies are meant for 7K axles using 12x2 inch brake assemblies. The assemblies...

We only have one electric brake assembly that may work for you, the Dexter Electric Brake Kit # 23-105-106-09. This kit fits standard 5-bolt mounting flanges or AL-KO/Hayes 4-bolt flanges. If you have that type of 4-bolt flange you would likely know it because the pattern is offset, with the upper mounting bolt holes spaced further apart than the lower holes. These brakes are rated for 6,000 lbs and would require Brake Mounting Bolts # 7-5, Nut # 38N and Lock Washer for Brake Mounting...

You will need one set for each of your 3 axles. If you need the mounting hardware the Brake Mounting Bolt for 12" Brake Assembly # 7-5 and lockwasher # 38LW along with nut # 38N are what you will need. For the left hand I recommend part # 23-458. The mounting hardware for the brake systems is not included. You will need part # 38LW, part # 38N, and part # 7-5. For each brake you will need 5 of each.

  • Replacement Hydraulic Brake Assemblies and Drums with 008-201-09 Casting Number for Boat Trailer
The 008-201-09 number you provided comes back on a Dexter Axle hub that we offer as part # 8-201-9UC3-EZ, a 12 x 2 inch brake drum. This hub uses a 25580 inner and 15123 outer bearing, so please check the reference numbers on your existing bearings to confirm that this hub is compatible. These assemblies will fit your 4 bolt flange and will work well on your trailer. The mounting nuts are included but the bolts are not. If you need the bolts and lockwashers, I recommend # 7-5 and # 38LW. You may also want the brake adjustment tool # W80630 to install and maintain your brakes.
