Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

This kit worked perfectly to replace the old hubs on a 1960s motorcycle carrier. If anything could have been improved upon it would be to include a cotter pin with the kit and have the new hubs come pre-painted rather than bare steel. Regardless, the kit passed it's first tests carrying perhaps 1000 pounds of excavator buckets on a busy freeway with potholes and bumps and survived several trips on a very twisty paved road with cliffs on the side dropping into the South Yuba River. The kit works! It's 'ok'! 638686

First time doing bearings. Everything went great except grease/dust caps would not go on so I got bearing buddies, no problems there. 549978

Comments
The grease caps can be challenging to install because of their tight fit. The best bet is to apply a very thin coat of grease around the inside edge of the hub bore. Have a helper hold the cap centered over the bore. Plase a small scrap of wood over the cap and drive it into place with a hammer. The scrap of wood will prevent the cap from being damaged.

Good hub, good price. Purchased for a vintage Alloy brand boat trailer. Perfect replacement . Matches the hub on the other side which I purchased from Etrailer some years ago. Nice to have this stability in the products offered. The only addition I made was to also order a double lipped grease seal at the time of purchase, since this is a boat trailer application. 789685

I should have known but I didn't read reviews. No Cotter pin! That is such an easy thing to add but they don't. It requires a trip to the store making this a pain in the rear. Would be a cool bonus to add a new nut as well. I think the instructions are not very in depth either but still a good product. 784713

Needed some hubs for a log arch I'm building. These are simple, inexpensive and reasonable quality. The plating is pretty poor; these aren't going to be really suitable for salt water immersion - but they'll work nicely in the woods behind my tractor. 731032

Ask the Experts about this etrailer Trailer Hubs and Drums

  • Length of Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000 lb Axles
I measured the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K and found it was 4-1/4" long. This hub uses inner and outer bearing # L44643 which have a 1" inner diameter as well as grease seal # 34823, which has a 1.249" inner diameter. It also has a 4 on 4" bolt pattern which is important so you know your current wheels will fit. I have added a link to a video review of this hub for you to take a look at as well.

  • Does a Washer go Between the Outside Bearing and the Axle Nut?
Yes there should be a thrust bearing/washer between the outer bearing and the nut that goes on to protect the bearing. What you want is Washer For 1" Spindle part # SW1000. This will replace the missing one and get you back on the road. Keep in mind this is for the very common 1" spindle diameter which is what the hub you looked at uses if you have a different size than this let me know.

  • How to Accurately Find Replacement Bearing
There is no way to know for sure with a measurement of 15/16 of an inch what the correct bearing is. The only way to know the correct bearing is to use a digital caliper such as # 301-17068 and measure your spindle to the thousandths of an inch where the bearing rides. The reason for that is because the measurements of some bearings are so similar; bearing # 1779 has a 0.938 inch inner diameter, bearing # L44643 has a 1.00 inch inner diameter and bearing # L44649 has a 1.063" inner diameter.

  • Hub with 4 Lug Bolt Pattern that Uses Bearing Numbers L44649
The two bearings you mentioned have different inner diameters. The # L44643 has an inner diameter that is exactly 1 inch and the # L44649 is 1.06 inch. This may not seem like a lot but it's a big enough difference to prevent the hub you have now from fitting your spindle (you may already know this). The seals are slightly different diameters too. Since you wouldn't be able to swap out the bearings of your current hub to the correct size you need (the hub won't match), the only solution...

  • What is the Difference Between Trailer Hubs # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K and # AKIHUB-440-2-G-2K
The two hubs you mentioned, # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K and # AKIHUB-440-2-G-2K fit different spindles. More specifically they use different bearings and seals. First, hub # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K uses L44643, with a 1 inch inner diameter, as the inner and outer bearing, and the seal is a 34823, which has an inner diameter of 1.249 inches and outer diameter of 1.983 inches. Based on your information this sounds like the correct replacement. Check your old bearing numbers or you can take measurements...

  • Can a 5-Lug Trailer Hub Replace a 4-Lug if the Bearings and Seals are the Same
Yes, you can go with hub # AKIHUB-545-2-G-1K since it uses the same bearings and seal size as your regular hub # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K. Keep in mind that you will also have to switch to wheels with the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I would assume you are wanting to go with 12 inch tires which is the largest either of these hubs can take. I have included a link to all of the wheel and tire and wheel combos we have in the 12 inch size with 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.

  • Lug Nut Torque Specification with Trailer Idler Hub Assembly AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K
The # AKIHUB-440-2-G-1K uses a 1/2 inch wheel stud. 90-95 ft lbs of torque is probably about right for the lug nuts. If you check out the lug nut torque chart that I attached you will see that nearly all the torque specs are that and higher. The wheel material also affects torque ratings, so it is lower for aluminum and higher for steel.
