These 12" x 2" free-backing hydraulic drum brakes make reversing easy, even when your surge actuator doesn’t have a reverse lockout. The uni-servo setup prevents the shoes from catching in reverse, so you can move freely without wheel drag or lockup. It’s a simple fix for smoother maneuvering when backing into tight spots or launching on a ramp.
Each assembly uses automotive-grade friction material that’s fully bonded to the brake shoes for consistent torque and quiet stops. The pads are SAE-N certified and deliver high braking performance while being environmentally friendly. Tapered edges help prevent stuttering and lockup, giving you confident, controlled braking under load.

The e-coated backing plates fend off rust and corrosion from road grime and moisture. Sealed adjuster plugs keep dirt and debris out of the internals, extending brake life and maintaining smooth operation over time. It’s a durable choice for trailers that see varied weather or storage conditions.
These brakes bolt directly to a standard 5-bolt mounting flange and fit most hub-and-drum assemblies from Dexter, Lippert (LCI), and AL-KO. They’re rated for 5,200 lb, 6,000 lb, and 7,000 lb axles and work with 14-1/2", 15", 16", or 16-1/2" wheels. Left-hand (driver’s side) and right-hand (passenger’s side) assemblies come ready to install—just add mounting hardware like #BRKH12 for a complete setup.
These assemblies are thoroughly tested to meet CSA, QAI, and SAE-N standards for performance and safety. Each set is proven under real braking conditions to ensure dependable stopping every time you tow.

Hi Ben, I am curious did the other side of your trailer also have free backing brakes? The side you didn't replace?
