Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Nice hitch, good finish and welds. Ensure you have a 19mm socket with a 8" minimum extension to tighten the bolts to 110 #ft. If you install this by yourself as i did, rest one side on a jack stand or floor jack with a towel placed between the jack and hitch to protect it and allow it to slide on while lifting the other side into place. 680688

Easy install. Video made it painless. Will "5 Star" recommend. Was going to rent a Uhaul to help with a move but ramp too narrow for ridding mower. Needed a trailer and the Suberu dealer wanted almost $500 to install one. Less than 160 and I'm good-to-go. 536271

2017 Subaru Outback Wagon

I ordered this for my wife's 2017 3.6 Outback. We have a 2-inch receiver bike rack so we needed an appropriate hitch. It shipped quickly and arrived undamaged. I didn't even put the car on a lift or jack it up. I pulled it nose in to our garage and used the gradual slope of the driveway to increase the access space under the vehicle. There were 5 exhaust hangars to pop off because of the dual mufflers. This was easy with lube and a pry bar. Following the advice of others, I purchased a 1 1/8" step down bit and a 1/2" titanium drill bit. The step-down bit was pricey [$$] but absolutely worth it. It took less than 10 seconds to enlarge the forward holes with the step-down bit. Time and lack of stress was worth [$$].The hitch was easy to mount with the first two bolts and fit perfectly around the spare tire portion of the body. The titanium drill bit made drilling the second set of holes quick and easy. Once all the holes were drilled, I sprayed the freshly drilled holes with flat black spray paint. Once dry, I added the second set of bolts and nuts. The two heat shields were easy to trim with a set of tin snips. The exhaust hangars went on easily with another shot of lube. The only thing I didn't have that I ended up needing was a 19mm deep socket. 18mm was the largest I had. Even with a trip to the auto parts store to buy the socket, I was done, start-to-finish, in less than 2 hours with no help. All of the decals peeled off easily with minimal residue. The hitch looks great and my wife is happy. Complete success for about [$$$] in materials. 536369

i installed your trailer hitch on my neighbors 2016 Subaru. To prepare, I watched the video provided. Overall, both the product and the instructions were very good. I felt one aspect of the instructions were a bit oversimplified. That had to do with enlarging the access holes so the flat straps and anchor bolts would fit through them. I tried the rotary file and a rotary stone. It was very slow going. I ended up using an air powered mini hack saw. Also, the instructions should tell the installer to make sure the bolt fits through the access hole before using the fish wire. I made the mistake of only checking the flat strap thinking if it would. It was a real challenge to fish the flat strap back out so I could enlarge the hole. The hitch itself is very well done. Looks great once on. 536365

The hitch is well made, with heavy materials and good welding.Shipping was prompt. All of the required hardware was included. However, the hitch did not fit well onto my 2015 Subaru Outback. The "wings" were placed or angled inwards too much, and did not clear the spare tire well. Much of the under carriage anti-corrosion material was scraped from the sides of the tire well as I positioned the hitch into place. It barely fit. It seemed pointless to call or return the hitch since the under coating was already damaged by the initial test fit of the hitch, so I just lived with it and completed the installation. The poor fit may be due to a minor individual variation in manufacture, or the 2015 tire well is slightly larger than 2014, I'm not sure. 536429

Hitch installation went very much as expected. Our vehicle has dual exhaust so it took quite a bit longer than 1.5 hours to install. The video on etrailer was very useful and a valuable tool before and during the install. Installing the wiring was another story. Something that should be so simple and easy became a point of aggravation. Trying to locate and especially retrieve the factory wire connection on our Subaru was nearly impossible UNTIL I called a friend that is a Subaru mechanic and he told me that you must remove the cargo tie down loop before trying to locate the wire connector. Very simple solution. This trick should absolutely be added to the video! 536384

After reviewing the online installation video, I decided that I could do it myself. I'm glad the video was there to give me confidence. I read the reviews also and was satisfied that this was the product I wanted. When the dealer wanted $300 bucks for the same thing, plus another $300 + to install, my decision was made. The product came and as one review mentioned, the box had a big hole in it. My box had 2 big holes in it and I wondered if it might be all scratched up but it was fine. The installation went well. I had some ramps that I backed onto then put jackstands under each side for safety insurance. The muffler came off easier than I expected and I was glad I used the tie down strap to secure the muffler from falling down. I had to borrow a step bit and that worked perfectly. Beware of the hot steel pieces of debris falling as you drill. I had a couple of those babies land on my neck and they were very hot. I used needle nose pliers to get the second guide wire through to put on the second bolt, that made the fishing of the wire a snap. I searched high and low for a 17/32 bit (spent more time looking for that than the entire installation) to drill the hole for the front bolt, never could find it. I ended up using a 1/2 bit and reaming out the hole a little larger and it worked out perfectly. I like the look of this hitch and it turned out perfectly. 536278

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

I decided to go with the etrailer branded class 3 hitch for my wife's 2019 Outback after getting etrailer's recommendation on which one would be best paired with my Thule T2 Pro XTB bike rack, which is a great rack, btw. Main reasoning was that the hitch sits back on the vehicle a little more and gives better clearance for the rack when folded up. This would apply to other kinds of hitch mounted accessories too. The hitch is not quite as hidden under the vehicle as some of the others but I was more concerned about using the bike rack as intended. Installation was not too bad, with the biggest challenge for me being the tight spaces around the muffler to drill the necessary holes even with the exhaust lowered as described in the video. I even considered removing the muffler for better access but was able to get it done without that. Main concern was damaging the exhaust system in the front if it was lowered too much. Using lubricant on the rubber exhaust hangers worked great for removing and putting them back on at the end. The tip for using a step drill bit worked great to enlarge the access holes the appropriate amount, as well. I was able to do the installation by myself with the help of a small rolling dolly on which to sit the hitch on while I bolted up the first set of bolts. It held the hitch up enough to work on one side at a time without having to support the entire weight of the hitch by myself. Having a helper would be better for sure. The 6 out of 10 installation difficulty scale seems about right to me. The hitch itself seems to be good quality, nice welds, matte finish looks great on the vehicle too. It also fits like a glove around spare tire well. No adjusting really necessary, just install the first set of bolts in the existing frame holes and you are lined up. You do have to drill the 2 more forward set of holes but using the hitch frame as the template (it's already mounted on the vehicle at this point) of where the holes go, it was a snap from there. I'll attach a couple of pics with the bike rack installed to show how much clearance there is. I also tested with a bike on the rack and was able to open the rear hatch all the way with the bike rack in the lowered position (a feature of the Thule T2). Hopefully, this will help others that want to use accessories that require clearance for bumper and hatch. Great communication and follow up from the etrailer team too! 641794

Just put on etrailers hitch. This is my third one that I have installed from etrailer on my past Subaru. I went with the etrailer hitch because I liked the matte black finish over the gloss black Curt. This one is easier than the Draw- Tite because it weighs less and I was able to handle it myself. I would suggest using a good step drill bit when enlarging the holes and make sure they are big enough. It took me 2 hours to complete mainly because of cutting the new holes and enlarging the other holes. Hitch was delivery very timely from etrailer just like the previous ones that I installed. 551238

When reinstalling the muffler heat shield, there is one hitch bolt that interferes with remounting the heat shield. All you need to do is mark and drill out the location of the one hitch bolt that's under the heat shield. Once hitch is installed and muffler is still hanging down, place the heat shield in its original location with the 2 small bolts under the muffler. Then in order to mark the hitch bolt location under the heat shield, take a hammer and tap on the heat shield to indent the hitch bolt location. Take the heat shield off and drill the hitch bolt location on the heat shield. Take the nut off that hitch bolt, reinstall the heat shield with the two small bolts behind the muffler and the nut on the hitch. I cut out the location of the bolt on the heat shield but I should have drilled it. Hitch was an easy install. I recommend having a step drill that's at least 1". Impressed with the hitch but was slightly disappointed that hitch was scratched up when opening the box. 688814

Custmer service is great. They keep you well informed from the time you place the order to the time its delivered. The quality of the etrailer brand hitch is very apparent to the point that I would rate it above the others and making for a trouble free installation The hitch will be used for a platform bike rack. 590885

The trailer hitch for my Subaru out back was a great quality and reading past reviews was easier to mount by cutting a window with my Dremel from under the trunk area, thinner metal easygoing then under twice as thick to oblong 3 sidded cut at forward foam button also kept everything the same to put together and plenty of fishing space too and by attaching front bolts allowed me to drill rear holes with hitch in place and not dropping to do so. A time and work saver, hope this helps the next person too 546900

Great product, very sturdy and fits perfectly. Instructions are AMAZING. Follow the instructions and have a little patience and you will be able to get this hitch on. Will be a nice addition for the Outback. Only downfall is that hitch is not hidden at ALL compared to other hitches I have installed on different vehicles. However looking at the pictures provided on the site that is made well known. 914965

The hitch arrived as scheduled. Installation went without a hitch (sorry for the pun), took about an hour. I had access to a hoist, it would have been a little harder without that. I also used a step bit to enlarge the forward holes - It would have taken longer and been more work without that as well. Overall seems to be a good product. 908615

  • Differences Between Curt, Draw-Tite, and etrailer Trailer Hitches for a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
The differences that you noted are really the only difference between the Curt # C13206 and the Draw-Tite # 75673 trailer hitches for your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon. The Curt has the round tube style but does require the support strap # 18050 for all non-trailer loads (like your bike rack) while the Draw-Tite has a square tube style and doesn't require the use of the strap. Included is an installed example for reference. If you have the Thule T2...

  • Installed Height of etrailer Brand Hitch Receiver e98847 on 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
When we installed the etrailer brand # e98847 receiver hitch on a 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon, we found the receiver height to be right at 16 inches, as shown in the linked install video. The average trailer coupler height is around 16 inches, so a ball mount like # 2923 would be about right. For a 1-7/8 inch trailer ball, I'd recommend # 19261 or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball. For a trailer wiring harness, use # 118467. I'll link you to installation instructions/videos for the hitch and the...

  • Best Trailer Hitch For 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon To Carry Bikes
The best trailer hitch option for the 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon to a bike rack with a 2" shank is etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver part # e98847 which provides better ground clearance than the other hitch options available. The extra ground clearance will come in handy during low ground clearance situations like turning into a steep driveway the bike rack won't drag the ground. It's also a very easy installation that does not require drilling I have attached an installation video for...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Recommendation for 2017 Subaru Outback
The best trailer brake controller for your 2017 Subaru Outback is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller # 90195. The P3 is the best option for you because it gives you the most consistently smooth braking, has a bright LCD screen that is easy to read, and has continual diagnostic checks with safeguards to prevent short outs. This is a very high-performing and reliable controller that has been reviewed thousands of times by our customers and has a nearly perfect 5-star rating,...

  • Differences Between Curt, Draw-Tite, and etrailer.com Trailer Hitches for 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
I definitely understand being a bit overwhelmed by the amount of options in front of you, however I can definitely help with differentiating the trailer hitches for your 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon along with explaining my personal recommendation, which is the Curt Class III # C13410. First off, all the hitches for your Subaru can be pretty easily broken down into two categories in terms of design; hidden and non-hidden. The Curt # C13410 and Draw-Tite # 76227 both feature a 2" receiver...

  • Is Draw-Tite or etrailer Hitch Better for 2019 Subaru Outback with Thule Bike Rack
The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98847 is a better option than the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75673 for your 2019 Subaru Outback for one simple reason: clearance. The hitches will be the same in terms of installation but as you can see by the linked installation video of both hitches on a '19 Outback, the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98847 offers about 3/4" more ground clearance and approximately 1-1/2" more bumper clearance, both of which are important factors for carrying accessories...

  • Hitch, Wiring Harness and Towing Mirrors for 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
Thank you for coming back to etrailer for a hitch and wiring for your new Subaru Outback Wagon! The hitch I recommend for your new Outback is our own USA-made 2-inch model # e98847. I like this option for its value and easier installation. The hitch you referenced in your question, EcoHitch # 306-X7601, costs more and will be much tougher to install. Unless you're really concerned about the hitch being well hidden I would stick with the etrailer hitch. It also has a much higher weight...

  • Complete Tow Setup with Transmission Cooler for 2019 Outback Towing Rockwood 1940LTD Pop-Up
A transmission cooler for your 2019 Subaru Outback 3.6 is definitely a good idea since the Rockwood 1940LTD pop-up has a gross weight (GVWR) of 2300-lbs, which is pretty close the car's maximum tow rating of 2700-lbs. A transmission cooler will take a lot of the stress off the new car's transmission especially when you're towing it in the mountains. We'll get you started with a hitch. I suggest 2-inch Class III hitch # e98847 because it offers the highest tow rating of 6000-lbs and also...

  • Recommendations for 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited Towing a 5x8 Hiker Highway Deluxe Trailer
Trailer Brakes are not required on most trailers under 3,000 lbs unless otherwise stated by the local authorities. This should not be an issue with safety behind your 2014 Subaru Outback, but you can add them if desired. I would just need you to pull a hub and let me know the number on the grease seal and the face of the 2 bearings in that hub. With that info I can get you the parts needed for the upgrade. The bigger issue with a trailer this size and weight is sway caused by wind...
