Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

So I recently purchased mountain bikes and knew I needed a bike rack and hitch. When making more expensive purchases, I research the product, competitors, pricing, customer services and reviews. I finally decided on the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver. I had it professionally installed and it looks great! I appreciate the help and assistance Teresa J. provided in helping me make my decision. Thank you eTrailer!

After one year, my hitch still looks and functions great! I love it so much, I ordered another etrailer Hitch for my other vehicle, a 2012 GMC Terrain and it works great on this and by 2015 Subaru Outback!

The etrailer tow hitch is a great and slightly cheaper alternative. The directions were easy to follow. Just need the proper tools and a plus of you have a helper. That wire bolt feeder is genius!

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

I decided to go with the etrailer branded class 3 hitch for my wife's 2019 Outback after getting etrailer's recommendation on which one would be best paired with my Thule T2 Pro XTB bike rack, which is a great rack, btw. Main reasoning was that the hitch sits back on the vehicle a little more and gives better clearance for the rack when folded up. This would apply to other kinds of hitch mounted accessories too. The hitch is not quite as hidden under the vehicle as some of the others but I was more concerned about using the bike rack as intended. Installation was not too bad, with the biggest challenge for me being the tight spaces around the muffler to drill the necessary holes even with the exhaust lowered as described in the video. I even considered removing the muffler for better access but was able to get it done without that. Main concern was damaging the exhaust system in the front if it was lowered too much. Using lubricant on the rubber exhaust hangers worked great for removing and putting them back on at the end. The tip for using a step drill bit worked great to enlarge the access holes the appropriate amount, as well. I was able to do the installation by myself with the help of a small rolling dolly on which to sit the hitch on while I bolted up the first set of bolts. It held the hitch up enough to work on one side at a time without having to support the entire weight of the hitch by myself. Having a helper would be better for sure. The 6 out of 10 installation difficulty scale seems about right to me. The hitch itself seems to be good quality, nice welds, matte finish looks great on the vehicle too. It also fits like a glove around spare tire well. No adjusting really necessary, just install the first set of bolts in the existing frame holes and you are lined up. You do have to drill the 2 more forward set of holes but using the hitch frame as the template (it's already mounted on the vehicle at this point) of where the holes go, it was a snap from there. I'll attach a couple of pics with the bike rack installed to show how much clearance there is. I also tested with a bike on the rack and was able to open the rear hatch all the way with the bike rack in the lowered position (a feature of the Thule T2). Hopefully, this will help others that want to use accessories that require clearance for bumper and hatch. Great communication and follow up from the etrailer team too!

I took my Subaru Outback in today to have the hitch installed. I dropped my car off and was driving home when I got a call from the installation place who said the hitch doesn’t fit. What’s my next move. I’m unable to install it myself do to needing neck surgery. My wife and I were going out of town this weekend and need the trailer hitch.

Comments
This hitch should fit a 2019 Subaru. We have an install video available for it. Please check the part number located on a sticker on the hitch to make sure you have the right item. If the sticker has the correct part number, then it is a case of flexed hitch and it is an easy fix. The mechanic should know about this if he has experience with trailer hitch receiver installs.

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

This was a super easy install. I don't have access to a lift, so I just used ramps I picked up from Home Depot for oil changes. I am a pretty good sized guy but this gave me plenty of room to work. No issues at all on the install. Instructional video was great and easy to follow. The only comments I have would be that if you are using ramps, be sure to have a long sleeve shirt on and safety glasses. The metal chips from drilling are hot and sharp. The pull wires worked excellent, I only used one of them. You do need to put a couple bends in the wire which they don't mention in the video. All in all I am really happy and would highly recommend this as a DIY install.

The product arrived in great condition, and installed perfectly onto my 2014 Subaru Outback. My only complaint was that the diagrams on the instructions could have been drawn better. I did the install myself and it involves lowering the exhaust pipe and drilling holes in the frame, it’s not a huge job but does involve the need for a 1.125 inch drill bit which is not cheap and the job is easier to do with a lift or Jack stands.

Very satisfied. Installation was not simple, but exactly as depicted in the instructinal video. The wire bolt threaders worked surprisingly well! the single most difficult step for me was prying loose the muffler/exhaust mounts. A second set of hands really helpful when lifting/bolting the hitch in place. Perfect custom fit - looks good.

Subaru

The last time I saw metal as stout as this I was touring an old Navy Battleship! I kid you not, this hitch is SUBSTANTIAL in its build quality. The dull finish (as opposed to a high gloss) is a PERFECT compliment to the overall look of the Subaru. Pretty much everything went as expected with the actual installation. I was most fearful of the hardware installation with the fish wires, but that went as smooth as could be. It turned out to be more challenging to remove the fish wire from the bolt and attach the nut initially. I was afraid I was going to end up pushing the bolt end back up into the hole in the frame never to be seen again! Just need to be careful with this. There is NO WAY I could lift this substantial piece of steel up into place on my own. I don't know how anyone could. As assistant is MANDATORY for the roughly 15 minutes that this step takes. (IMHO) I briefly considered removing both mufflers to make tool access easier but managed to move things around enough to get it all done. (And I really DID NOT want to break open the exhaust system!) The diagram that tells you to mark and cut the muffler heat shields is way overly generous. You do not need to remove anywhere near the amount of material as they show. The ONLY reassembly issue turned out to be the very last rubber exhaust hanger - the rear-most one on the passenger side. I forgot to put it in place before raising the mufflers and so it was a little tight getting my hands in there to secure it onto the support arm. (Soapy water in a spray bottle was a huge help with the rubber parts.) Other than that, everything seemed to go about as expected. With the couple exceptions I noted here, the e-Trailer installation video is SPOT ON. (I'm having problems trying to upload pictures, so will have to figure that out and try again at a later time.)

2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

I bought this hitch receiver to replace an existing one on my 2019 Subaru Outback 3.6R Touring. The receiver I had previously was recessed several inches from the edge of the rear bumper. It prevented me from being able to mount a swing-away fullsize spare tire carrier. This hitch solved that problem. The installation was not a problem, but re-mounting the dual exhaust on the 3.6 Outback was extremely difficult. My car has a 2" lift on it and is running 30" A/T tires so getting underneath it was not a problem. Lowering both mufflers, removing the heat shields, removing the old receiver, installing this new receiver, torquing the bolts to spec and reinstalling the heat shields took a little over 45 minutes by myself. I used a good, rolling floor jack to lower the old receiver down and to position the new receiver into place. It took me 1½ hours of wrestling with the mufflers to get the two rubber isolators per muffler back into place. I felt like I had wrestled a bear by the time I was finished. If I had to do it again, I would definitely pay to have someone install it for me.

Comments
The hitch is tough! It has carried a swing-away full tire carrier and a full-size spare wheel & tire that weigh a combined ~100 lbs everyday for over a year and it has been great.

The hitch was installed today on our 2018 Subaru Outback. Wow this thing is solid. We bought the car so we can tow our mini camper, and our mechanic did the installation. He also directed us to this site to buy it. Totally worth it. Next step is to get the electric connector kit and the ball+hitch. He'll install those too but not until just before we head out to pick up the camper from the manufacture in late August. Anyway we couldn't be happier with this part of the process. Cheers, Bryan

Custmer service is great. They keep you well informed from the time you place the order to the time its delivered. The quality of the etrailer brand hitch is very apparent to the point that I would rate it above the others and making for a trouble free installation The hitch will be used for a platform bike rack.

2016 Subaru Outback Wagon

The hitch is built like a tank and fit perfectly. I watched the instructions online before beginning and the process was very simple. I was grateful they provided the wire fishes for the bolts. I managed to do the whole thing myself by simply laying the hitch on my belly as I was under the car, and set the first two bolts. I regret not following advice I saw in another review about making a hole for the heat shield, and capturing it under one of the hitch bolts, since with only 3 screws remaining, the heat shield might end up rattling in time. If I were to do it over again, I would do it that way. Do make sure to drill out the first holes big enough for not only the washer, but also the bolt head, which is a touch wider. The whole job took me about 3 hours, working slowly with gimpy knees. I was happy to spend a sunny morning doing that, rather than paying hundreds of dollars for such a simple task.

Just put on etrailers hitch. This is my third one that I have installed from etrailer on my past Subaru. I went with the etrailer hitch because I liked the matte black finish over the gloss black Curt. This one is easier than the Draw- Tite because it weighs less and I was able to handle it myself. I would suggest using a good step drill bit when enlarging the holes and make sure they are big enough. It took me 2 hours to complete mainly because of cutting the new holes and enlarging the other holes. Hitch was delivery very timely from etrailer just like the previous ones that I installed.

Installation instructions did not highlight the difficult steps. Overall fit for vehicle was not perfect. Difficulty on a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the most difficult, is a 9.

Thank you for your review. I apologize that you had such trouble with this hitch receiver. It could have been flexed a bit which would be why the fit was a little off. Here is the installation video for this exact vehicle:

All went well. Took a bit longer to install than I expected but it wasn't you fault. The usual gremlins. Watching your videos helped a lot. Your paper instructions were better than most. Have you been taking lessons from [container store]? ;o) Took about 20 minutes to get to your guy to complete the order but he (Noah) was very knowledgeable, helpful and great to do business with. Will recommend you to anyone I know. Thanks.

Nice hitch. Easy to install it took me about an hour or so. Directions were easy to understand and the video makes simple to understand. This will be perfect for the bike rack we have. Just a tip- use windex on the rubber holders for the exhaust as a lubricant. It evaporates away when you are done. I’ve used it when changing motorcycle tires for forever.

  • Differences Between Curt, Draw-Tite, and etrailer Trailer Hitches for a 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
The differences that you noted are really the only difference between the Curt # C13206 and the Draw-Tite # 75673 trailer hitches for your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon. We have heard back from several customers that this trailer hitch works just fine on models with the dual exhaust like yours and I have attached one of these reviews for you as well as our install video though this model only has a single exhaust. If you will be using this trailer hitch for a bike rack, I recommend the Kuat Transfer V2 Bike Platform Rack part #...

  • Hitch For 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon With Best Ground Clearance
A couple things to consider are that you want a hitch with the best ground clearance plus a bike rack with rise in the shank to reduce your odds of making contact with your driveway backing out. For a hitch, the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98847 is the one I recommend. As far as ground clearance goes we found that to be 16" from the ground to the top inside of the receiver so you're really looking at about 13-3/4" above the ground when we take into account the 2" receiver and...

  • Trailer Brake Controller Recommendation for 2017 Subaru Outback

  • Best Trailer Hitch to Use with Bike Rack on 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
The best trailer hitch for use with a bike rack on your 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon is the etrailer.com Class III Hitch # e98847 because of its robust 600 pound tongue weight capacity and its ideal bumper clearance measurement. This particular hitch when installed on the 2019 Outback has a measurement of 3-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper. • Recommended Hitches and Bike Rack for 2019 Honda Odyssey and 2019 Subaru Outback
The good news is that most hitches are custom fit for specific vehicles, so there is no drilling required on most hitches. Since you're looking for hitches to carry a bike rack and bikes For your 2019 Subaru Outback I recommend using the etrailer # e98847 because of the heavy duty powder coating that is applied, which will help fight off rust. • Tongue Weight Capacity of 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R with etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver
The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" # E98847 will not increase the towing or tongue weight capacities of your vehicle but it can limit it. Trailer hitches are not rated for weight capacities on each vehicle but rather on the hitch itself as many hitches will fit different models and different years. For your 2016 Subaru Outback 3.6R the manufacturer lists your towing capacity at 3,000 lbs with a tongue weight capacity of 200 lbs....

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver To Fit A 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon
The recommended hitch really depends on which model T2 you have. For the TH9044 Thule T2 for 2" hitches you will need a 2" hitch receiver. In that case I recommend the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98847. I like this hitch because the low profile design and matte black finish blends in the receiver tube so that it looks like it was always a part of the Subuaru Outback from the rear of the vehicle. Included is an installed example for reference. If you have the Thule T2 Classic...

  • How Much Can a 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon Tow
If the vehicle's towing capacity is lower than the trailer hitches towing capacity, then that will need to be the figure you abide by and vice versa. You always need to abide by the weakest component in the towing setup. The reason for this is that the trailer hitch and vehicle are tested separately of one another so the ratings do not exactly coincide. Therefore, when towing with your 2016 Subaru Outback Wagon using the Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E98847, you will be limited to what...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for Bike Rack on 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
For your 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon I definitely recommend going with a Class III trailer hitch that features a 2 inch receiver, specifically the etrailer.com # E98847. This is because a 2 inch receiver opens the door to many more compatible accessories when compared to a smaller 1-1/4 inch receiver that's on Class I and II hitches. It's also very likely that your existing swing-away bike rack or the one you have your eye on is only compatible with 2 inch receivers. As you mentioned...
