Kodiak Trailer Brakes - KOD49FR

Highlights

  • Stops Smooth and Fast: Disc design delivers shorter, more controlled braking at highway speeds for a safer, steadier tow.
  • Fights Rust and Corrosion: Dacromet hub-rotors (300–400 hr) and KodaGuard calipers (500–600 hr) resist salt, slush, and water.
  • Saves Time and Mess: 1-piece hub-and-rotor with bearings, races, seals, caps, oil, bolts, and lug nuts ready to install on one axle.
  • Runs Cooler, Lasts Longer: Vented rotors shed heat fast to prevent brake fade and extend pad life on repeated stops.
  • Low-Maintenance Design: Fewer parts than drum brakes—no springs or magnets to adjust or replace over time.
  • Rated for 3,500-lb Axles: Fits 13" and larger wheels with 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern and 1/2" wheel bolts.

Features to know about

Upgrade Old Drum Brakes: One-Piece Hub-and-Rotor Disc Kit for Stronger, Smoother Stops

If you’re ready to move on from drum brakes, this Kodiak disc brake kit makes the upgrade easy. Each 10" hub-and-rotor assembly is built as a single piece, which helps prevent uneven rotor wear and keeps water and debris out. The 3,500-lb axle rating and 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern make it a solid fit for most standard setups. Shorter stopping distances and smooth, controlled braking give you more confidence every time you slow down.

Built to Beat Corrosion: Dacromet and KodaGuard Coatings for Long-Term Protection

Salt, slush, and road grime won’t eat through these brakes quickly. The Dacromet plating on the hub-rotor assemblies and brackets provides a 300- to 400-hour salt spray rating, while the KodaGuard coating on the calipers pushes that protection up to 500- to 600-hours. That means you can count on these brakes to stay clean and solid even after repeated exposure to water or salty roads.

Consistent Control in Demanding Conditions: Ceramic Pads and Stainless Steel Piston

Whether you’re towing through city traffic or down long grades, these brakes deliver steady performance. The large stainless steel piston responds quickly for smooth braking power, and the ceramic pads grab consistently without fading. The vented rotor design sheds heat fast to keep performance even over time and reduce premature pad wear.

Low Maintenance and Easy to Service: Simple Design Saves Time and Money

Disc brakes already require less upkeep than drums, but this setup goes even further. There are no springs or magnets to adjust—just pads that are easy to access when it’s time for replacement. The one-piece design also saves you from dealing with extra hardware or alignment issues. Each kit includes everything needed for one axle, including bearings, races, seals, oil caps, synthetic bearing oil, wheel bolts, and lug nuts, so you can get back on the road quickly with fewer parts to worry about.

Video Transcript for Hands-On with the Kodiak Disc Brakes

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 10 inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly. This is going to allow you to upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes for superior performance. And this will work with your single 3,500 pound capacity axle with the 80 or number 84 spindles. And this rotor is a 10 inch diameter. It's got a five on four and a half inch bolt pattern.

So it is going to fit your wheel sizes from 13 inches and up. Upgrading your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes is going to dramatically shorten your stopping distance. It's also going to provide smoother and more controlled braking than with using your drum brakes. We do have ceramic brake pads here and so if I pull this apart, you'll be able to see that a little bit better. So our ceramic brake pads are going to help increase your stopping power.

And then inside there you can see we do have a large two and a quarter inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide a fast response while you're breaking. So it's going to do a great job for you, help keep your trailer pushing and pulling you as you're going down the road. This is going to require less maintenance than your drum breaks. Very little maintenance required with these. So it is going to help save you time and money.

You've got the one piece hub and rotor assembly that's gonna reduce the chance of uneven rotor wear. This rotor is a vented design, so it is going to help dissipate the heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wearing. It is also going to have a high quality, automotive-grade construction, so it is gonna be very long lasting for you. Disc brakes do require a higher line pressure than your standard drum brakes, so you will need to have a hydraulic brake actuator and brake lines that are rated for at least 1500 PSI to make sure that they will be able to activate your brakes properly. So that is not included.

We do sell hydraulic brake actuators and brake lines separately here at etrailer.com so you can find those so that you can get everything set up properly. This kit is going to include your two dichromate-plated cast iron hub and rotor assemblies. These do have the five pre-installed half inch wheel bolts on each one so that you can get the, the wheels installed properly. These are also going to give you the two coatta guard coated cast iron calipers as well as the two decrement-plated duct tile iron caliper mounting brackets on the backside here. So if I turn this around you can see that a little bit better. So these mounting brackets do have a four bolt brake flange configuration. And then of course you're going to get the four stainless steel caliper mounting bolts there. This kit is also going to include two inner bearings and two outer bearings. Those are part numbers that you see on the screen there. You're also going to get the two inner races and two outer races that are already pre-installed here but you can see those part numbers on the screen there as well. So you're also going to get two 1.72 inner diameter oil seals as well as two of these 1.98 outer diameter oil caps. You'll get one eight ounce bottle of synthetic bearing oil and then the 10 half inch zinc-plated steel lug nuts that you need. So the dichromate, coatta guard, and zinc plating is going to help make these a great option for your boat trailers and trailers that are used in your coastal areas or in heavily treated roads where that salt is going to play a big factor on how long these will last. Now the coating here isn't going to make these last as long as your stainless steel options but they are quite a bit more affordable. Your stainless steel is going to last a little bit longer but it's quite a bit more expensive. So that dichromate finish on your hub and rotors, the brackets is going to offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance with a 300 to 400 hour salt spray rating, then your coatta guard coating on the caliper is going to offer a 500 to 600 hour salt spray rating. As for even more rust and corrosion resistance. So like I said it is going to hold up really well for you, especially if you're gonna be in salt water or very salty environments. This will do a great job for you for years to come. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

The brake rotors and brake caliper are very nice. Paint is holding up on calipers. I do not like the oil bath blue plastic cap. It is cheap and breaks easily. I replaced mine with grease bearing buddy's. Oil bath hubs work great and run cooler but if you lose the oil, bearing failure will occur fast. And in my opinion as a retired aircraft mechanic you are asking for trouble with the plastic blue caps. If the caps were machined metal or a less brittle plastic then the would be great.

Very helpful. Excellent service. Would always recommend buying from etrailer. Would get 5 stars if the brakes came with covers for the caliper bolts came with covers like the ones I was replacing.

The drum brakes on my 2000 4500-lb, dual-axle trailer were locking up and showing failure at some of the shoe linings. I decided to upgrade to disc brakes using a "electronic over hydraulic" (EOH) actuator, as I already had a Prodigy P2 trailer brake controller. The Kodiak Disc brake with KodaGuard was perfect for a trailer that launches in salt water. The installation was straight-forward, and as a precaution, I used stainless steel mounting bolts for the caliper mount.

Glad you like it, Scott! Since you said salt water launches, what kind of boat do you have? We had a 14' Boston Whaler growing up and that thing was pretty cool. Until we took it from one bay to another during heavy seas in San Diego. I think every one of us ended up getting sick that trip.

It showed up around 3:30 in a couple of hours I had one wheel done on my trailstar boat trailer. Fits up perfectly thanks again trailer you guys are the best.
by:
Easy installation and they work.
by:
Package with bearing were lose in box and no seals. Once notified e trailer sent seal fast
by:
Well made brakes, they sent wrong small bearings and refunded me the cost for the ones I got at auto store. Very nice results!!
by:
Brakes bolted right up on my 2001 DHM boat trailer, replacing the UFP brakes which were badly worn. The Kodiak brakes are great quality and ETrailer customer service was phenomenal. The original bearing buddies were badly worn so I installed the caps which came with the kit, but I will be ordering new bearing buddy caps soon.
by:
The conversion kit from drum to disc brakes was very easy to install and fit perfectly. The brakes and actuator worked very well for the first summer but then seized in the winter after only a handful of times being in salt water and then rinsed afterwards. Eventually I was able to unseize them but I was disappointed that salt water brakes seized so quickly.

Great product all parts were there and really nice set up
by:
Excellent fit and performance!

Finally completed the installation after dealing with a useless set of mounting hardware - see separate review. Recommending getting your own mounting hardware based on the dimensions of what you have to work with for axle mounting brackets.
Otherwise, the installation went together fine. Recommended watching the videos available on the website.
The hardware looks top quality. Awaiting road test.

These brakes have turned out well for me, as expected. They are so much more reliable and maintenance free than my old drum brakes. Make the changeover - pretty sure youll be glad you did.

by:
Replaced brakes, lines, leaf springs and all new tires.everything is still running great. I would definitely recommend these products again. Quite a project for me to do by myself. But I have time, I’m retired.
by:
A perfect fit and very easy to install!
by:
I was hoping I would get completed order but I was very disappointed that the grease seals lug nuts cape arrived today but no brakes. I was giving only one tracking number and was expecting full order.

Haven't installed yet. looks as expected. Shipping was great, even though I ordered an out of stock item the communication was fantastic and arrived when they said it would. The box it came in had nice handle cuts in it for handling, It was actually still square when I received it. Nice quality work by all.
by:
wit out operating the trailer and it will not be used until the lake has lost it's ice in late April I will not know until then. Right now the snow in the driveway keeps me from even installing the brakes.

  • Looking For Oil Bath Disc Brake Kit For A Dexter 3,500 lb Axle
Hello Gary, thanks for reaching out and for providing all that information. We do offer an oil bath disc brake kit that will fit your trailer. The # L68149 inner and # L44649 outer bearing combination is quite common, so parts are going to be readily available. Our disc brake kits do come with new calipers and pads so I do recommend you install those new as well. Here is what I recommend: - Kodiak Disc Brakes - 10" Hub/Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet/KodaGuard - 3,500 lbs - Oil # KOD49FR

  • Are The Drive-In Oil Caps Secure Compared To Thread-In Caps
Hey Scott, thanks for reaching out. I see you already ordered the # KOD49FR kit, but I still wanted to reply and address your concern. The oil caps that come with this kit are drive-in. These things are machined down to the thousandth of an inch, so they are quite secure. We do not see issues with them falling out unexpectedly. The only way this could happen is if your hubs are damaged or excessively worn. With new hubs this will not be a problem. Please let me know if there is anything...

  • Replacement Disc Brakes for 2013 EZ Loader Adjustable Boat Trailer
After speaking with EZ Loader what you have on your trailer is a 3,700 lb axle. From what they said the axle was upgraded even though your overall trailer capacity is 3,100 lbs. Although this uses the same # L44649 outer and # L68149 inner bearings, the grease seal listed for the # DE89YR won't match up since it has a larger inner diameter. You will need to use the # 168255TB to get it to work. The bearings on the Kodiak # KOD49FR you were looking at would also fit your spindle. However,...

  • Will The Kodiak Disc Brakes Kit # KOD49FR Fit In EZ Loader Trailer With 3,700LB Axle?
I reached out to EZ Loader who verified your spindles will require the 1.687 Seal # 168255TB. So you would need to change out the seal to use the Kodiak Disc Brakes Kit # KOD49FR you found.

  • Will Kodiak Disc Brakes Fit 2007 EZ Loader Trailer
Hey Tom! Thanks for providing that VIN number. I reached out to EZ Loader and you have a #84 spindle on there so the Kodiak Disc Brakes # KOD49FR will fit your trailer. If you don't already have oil you can use the Kodiak Synthetic Bearing Oil for Oil Bath Hubs # XLPROLUBE. What kind of boat are you hauling?
