Video Transcript for Review of Kodiak Trailer Brakes - Disc Brake Caliper - KDBC225KG

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Kodiak KodaGuard disc brake caliper for 3,500 pound to 6,000 pound axles. Now, this caliper is constructed of a cast iron, and it is plated with KodaGuard for superior rust resistance, durability. It is a cast iron construction which will prevent flexing, helps keep your braking torque consistent. And it is a self-adjusting design caliper, which ensures smooth, even braking.

The low drag ability retracts the piston further than traditional models. The less friction leads to a cooler running brake. Now, the piston on this, I turned it over. I'm gonna take the brake pad out just to show you the piston right here. This is a 2 1/4 inch diameter stainless steel piston, and it is about 30% larger than in most disc brake systems.

And that'll give you increased breaking torque and shorter stopping distances. The brake pads that that comes with are ceramic brake pads. They provide superior performance for more consistent braking. And that will withstand high temperatures for maximum wear. The stainless steel backing plates on the brake pads will help prevent corrosion.

And we mentioned the KodaGuard plating on it, which will provide the excellent corrosion resistant for freshwater or saltwater use. This KodaGuard finish does have a 600-hour salt spray rating. And this caliper will include everything I got laid out here on the table. The stainless steel, the caliper itself, the stainless steel piston we mentioned, the dual port bleed screws, the two stainless steel guide bolts that are used to install this, and we mentioned the ceramic brake pads. Few specs on this, again, the application is for disc brakes with the axle ratings of 3,500 pounds up to 6,000 pounds and have the rotor diameters from 10 inches up to 12 inches.

But that should do it for the review on the Kodiak KodaGuard disc brake caliper for 3,500 pound to 6,000 pound axles..

The delivery was quick. Unfortunately, I bought this caliper to replace the one I bought last season. It froze up. The other side was fine. I was hoping to get more use out of them. Also, I bought the caliper not realizing that it came with brake pads. I bought another set of pads too. I guess I'll keep them as a backup.

I changed out two tie down calipers and pads for these kodiak calipers and pads. These are much more heavy duty.the finesh look tough. I had a tough time mounting the one on the left side of my westco trailer. Very little clearance, since the kodiak slide bolts are larger and longer than the tie down. My wife came out and said a little prayer, and they went on.! The one on the right side went on with ease. Had to be more clearance on the right side than the left. I kept the same roters . Cleaned and buffed with drill and wire brush. They drag a little, but when I installed the ones I'm replacing they grug initially , but it went away. I hope I don't have an issue. I bled the lines after installation. I'm happy at the present. I got 4 years out of tie down. Will see how these do.

I purchased 4 Kodiak KDBC225KG calipers to replace 10 year old Kodiak 225, plain, cast iron calipers on a twin axle EZ Loader trailer used to tow a 22 ft. Hewescraft sportfishing boat. The boat is used exclusively in saltwater in NW Washington state. The original calipers were fully functional, but the original friction pads had detached from the backing plates in 3 out of the 4 calipers. So, I decided to remove and replace the calipers and pads. Kodiak and the other manufacturers offer an array of options, from stainless steel rotors, calipers, friction pad backing plates etc., to basic cast iron components with varying degrees of surface treatment to resist corrosion. The Kodiak website briefly discusses the different coatings and the results of continuous testing with salt spray, not total immersion. I decided to give the Kodiak Kodaguard coating a try based on its advertised corrosion resistance and it's position, cost-wise, between stainless steel and untreated cast iron. The calipers arrived using standard, free shipping, in 5 business days, and well packaged. I was impressed by the appearance of the Kodaguard coated calipers and discovered that the friction pad backing plates included as part of the assembly, are stainless steel. This detail was not mentioned in the "etrailer" product description. I also want to acknowledge excellent communication from "etrailer"related to the shipping progress. I expect great performance from the Kodiak KDBC225KG calipers and pads but, since I'm currently completing the installation, I have yet to tow the boat and trailer with the new components installed.

Out with the old and in with the new. After bleeding all four calipers the brakes worked like they were brand new. I just hope the Kodaguard holds up to keep them from rusting. The old calipers were 6 years old.

My Brake parts arrived on schedule and are exactly what I expected. All Good!!

Prompt service ty

Price was good. Shipping was quick. Trying the coated calipers with the stainless steel backing plate on the pads, this time. Even though the trailer and brake system is flushed after every use: it's always a problem keeping the calipers in working condition on a trailer that's always used in salt water. this trailer is 17 years old and still going strong.

The calipers were of good quality and f it.

Product arrived on time and installed without any issues. The free shipping was an extra bonus and I hope they run the promotion again soon.

Service is fantastic. Quality products. Fast, free delivery.

The parts I needed with the best price both on line and shopping local vendors. Fast free shipping makes it a "no brainier!"

  • Replacement Brake Calipers and Mounting Brackets for Load Rite Tandem Axle Trailer with 3.5K Alxes
Because Kodiak hasn't tested their calipers with brackets from Tie Down, they weren't able to say if they'd be compatible. We do offer the calipers and the brackets sold separately, though. The caliper is part # KDBC225KG and the bracket needed will depend on what type of rotor you have. If you have a hub/rotor, use # KCMB10HRD or # KCMB10RD if you're using a rotor that slips over an idler hub. Each part is sold individually.
