Features to know about

Restore Confident Stopping Power: 10" Electric Drum Brakes for 4.4K Axles

If your trailer’s brakes are worn or dragging, these Dexter electric drum brake assemblies bring back reliable stopping performance. They’re built for 4,400-lb axles manufactured before May 2009 and mount to a 2.83" x 2.83" 4-bolt flange. The 10" x 2-1/4" drums work with 14", 14-1/2", and 15" wheels, delivering solid braking torque and smooth control without the need for hydraulic lines or actuators.

Straightforward DIY Replacement: Bolt-On Left and Right Assemblies

Each kit includes both left-hand (driver’s side) and right-hand (passenger’s side) brake assemblies plus the mounting bolts and nuts you’ll need. Once you’ve confirmed your axle specs match, installation is simple—just bolt them up and wire them in. The electric setup only requires a brake controller (sold separately), so the swap is quick and clean without dealing with fluid or bleeding.

Consistent Braking You Can Count On: Fully Bonded Pads and Protected Hardware

The long-lasting brake pads are fully bonded—not riveted—to the shoes, giving smoother, more consistent braking performance over time. Adjuster plugs seal out dirt, grime, and debris to help the internal parts stay clean. Regular manual adjustment keeps them performing at their best, and when properly set up, they maintain confident braking mile after mile.

Built for Reliable Performance: Precision Fit for Older Dexter Axles

With accurate dimensions—10" diameter x 2-1/4" width and 2-13/16" bolt hole spacing on center—they install securely without modification. A limited 5-year warranty backs their durability for long-term use.

3 out of the 4 were new but there was one that looked recycled as it had shorter magnet wiring (3”) with cut off connectors on it.. But all worked as designed once I got them installed..
by:
purchased 2 set of these 10" electric brake kits for my 4.4k axles, very hard to find but talked with etrailer said they could help me out and had them in 3 days. AWESOME.However upon mounting them and installing the drum, realized the new mounting plate was 1/4' to 3/8" thicker than the old one not allowing the drum to go on far enough before hitting brake pad bracket. Had to remove new pads, springs, magnet and adjuster and mount to old bracket for it to work. was not as cut and dried as i thought it would be, hopefully i can get a little refund for the new mounting plate that i could not use.

I was extremely surprised with the positive response with their customer service, error on my part ordering the wrong part. Extremely quick delivery exchange (2days) living on the Canadian West Coast.
The brakes are doing their job great, easy installation using etrailer tutorial videos. Great company will use again.

Have had these brakes on the trailer for one year, and we have put approximately 4500 miles on them. They have performed flawlessly.

Absolutely no problems with these after another year with 2000 more miles on them.

Simple way to replace your brakes on trailer. Everything is new, springs, brake pads, etc. Highly recommended.
by:
They worked but not great. I'm hoping that they'll break in at some point. Would be nice to get more dimensions (on all the trailer brakes at eTrailer). But, they instaled ok and etrailer's customer service is top notch.

Making the call to etrailer was easy. Nice to deal with and I had all the OEM part numbers to insure correct replacements. Tyler got me the parts I needed and once arrived (well packaged) I did my dual axle brake and bearing replacement. Being in this business my entire life, made things easier. Parts were exactly what I needed and although I didn't need to change some items, my 13yr old trailer got some good PM work! Thanks.

After ordering a cheaper off brand from a popular site because of the cheaper price, I looked on etrailer and found Dexter "MADE IN USA". I cancelled the other order and bought these. Ordered on Wednesday. Received on Friday. Professional customer service and original quality part. Don't settle for cheap foreign parts. Buy USA when possible. Buy etrailer. An American, family run company.

Perfect fit!!! I have Lippert axles on my enclosed snowmobile trailer after two years of use my brakes were very bad rusted up and one had a separate pad floating around in hub. I was happy to be able to put Dexter brake assembly on them and fit perfectly. Looking at them it might be just me but Dexter looks like way higher quality made. At least parts or all of the brake assembly is made in us! I had parts less than 72 hours doing regular shipping every thing was packed good. It’s also awesome that I’m able to get complete bearing kits from you that is timken. Makes life easier
by:
They fit perfectly! I was wondering why my trailer was "pulsing and jerking" very badly every time I put on the brakes. See photo. This fixed the problem!

Well I am glad you were able to find the source of the issue and get that fixed! It is great to hear the new ones are working well and fit perfect. What kind of trailer did you install these on?

by:
With etrailer, it was easy to find and verify the correct replacement Dexter electric brake assembly(s) that I needed. Shipment was quick and delivery on time.
by:
Would of gave them 5 stars but one of the brake assemblies had a loose spring in the bottom of the box and the two piece adjustment screw was loose in the box also. Put things back together and still had to smack it with a dead blow hammer on one side so it would pop back in place. Hub went on fine after that. No idea who to fault on this issue. I'm sure e trailer would of sent a replacement but i really just wanted to get my trailer out of my garage. Other than that, things went together very easy.
by:
Great parts always delivered quickly. Fresh brakes ready to roll.

Brakes working great, great product

by:
My trailer is a 2004. The pads were cracked and at least one magnet was bad. Replacing the entire brake assembly seemed like the best option. Everything was packaged well and ready to bolt up right out of the box.
I only needed move the adjusters a few clicks.
Would recommend for older trailers that haven't been maintained.
by:
Swapped out all four brake assemblies on our Jacobson trailer. Swap was easy and fit was terrific. I would definitely purchase again. And would recommend to other people should the topic come up.

  • Replacement Electric Brakes for 4,200 lb Axle on Coachmen Apex Nano Trailer
Though I would not be able to answer for parts that are on your trailer now, it is a good idea for your brakes to match your axle's weight capacity. As for a replacement, I could not find a reference to the brakes you have now, and the only replacements that fit a 10" x 2-1/4" drum have a 4-bolt mounting flange or a very specific 4-bolt flange with 2.83" x 2.83" spacing. Since the brake kit you referenced has a 4-bolt flange do you have 2.83" x 2.83" spacing or need a different size?

  • Recommended Brake Assemblies and Hubs for a Old Style Trailer w/ a 6 on 5-1/2 Lug Nut Pattern
Hey Liam. All of our 10" brake assemblies like item # 23-454-455 have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange. The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly item # 8-407-5UC3-EZ you were looking at is not available in a 12" drum. We do not have a 12" braking hub that fits your spindle. The only option I would have for you is to replace the brake flange on your axle with the item # 4-50 for 3-1/2" diameter axles or item # DM52415 for 3" diameter axles. If you were able to do this you could use the Dexter...

  • Do You Have Brakes and Hubs for My AL-KO 90-12 Hub for My 4,400 Pound Axle?
Hello David, The Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 4,400-lb E-Z Lube Axles - 10" Diameter - 6 on 5-1/2 # 8-407-5UC3-EZ will work as a replacement just as long as it is not an AL-KO Axle, if it is an AL-KO axle we do not have a hub that will work. For brakes you will want one of the following: - If it is a Dexter axle manufactured prior to May 2009: # 23-454-455 - If it is manufactured after May 2009: # K23-478-479 If it is an AL-KO axle you will need to swap out the whole axle. If you are not loading the trailer at full capacity then you will definitely be safe using the etrailer Electric Trailer Brakes - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left/Right Hand Assemblies - 3.5K # AKEBRK-35-SA as the bolt hole dimensions are 2 13/16" (hair shy of 3") center to center all the way around. • Choosing the Correct 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Electric Brakes
The brakes need to fit the axle. Or more specifically the hubs and the brake mounting flanges on the axle. One thing that may be confusing you is that brake assemblies for 4,400 pound axles and those for 3,500 pound axles are both 10 x 2-1/4 inches. The difference will be the brake mounting flange bolt hole pattern. If your axle is a indeed a 3,500 pound axle # AKEBRK-35-SA will work for you. The mounting bolts are included but you need part # BRKH10B for the nuts and lock washers. If...

  • Recommended Dexter Electric Drum Brakes for 4000-lb Axles on 5th Wheel Trailer
We have electric drum brakes rated for 4400-lb axles (and hydraulic drum brakes rated for 3750- and 5200-lb axles) but none rated for exactly 4000-lbs. For electric drum brakes in the 10 x 2-1/4-inch size for a 5th wheel the 4400-lb-rated brakes will be fine. I suggest using Dexter kit # K23-462-463-00 which is a left- and right-hand set of manual-adjust brakes with the 4-bolt mounting pattern. These work with trailer wheels from 13- to 15-inches. When you install the new brakes either...

  • Brakes Will Not Stop Trailer After New Backing Plates and Adjusting
Yes, it is possible that the brakes are not powerful enough to stop the trailer. However, if you have the correct braking assemblies that match the axle capacity then this should not be a problem so long as the trailer is not overloaded. That said, the 3,500 lb braking assemblies and some 4,400 lb braking assemblies have the same 4 bolt pattern and 10" x 2-1/4" dimensions so you could try these higher rated assemblies out to see if they can help stop the trailer, the Dexter Electric Brake...

A 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assembly would typically be found on a 3500 lb axle, and would use a 4 bolt mounting flange whose holes are 2-7/8 inches apart on center. However, there was an exception. Before May of 2009, Dexter manufactured a 4400 lb capacity axle that used mounting flanges that had holes that were 2-13/16 inches on center. An example of those would be the # 23-454-455 Dexter Brake assemblies. That axle was kind of an oddity, I believe Dexter built that as a proprietary item...
