Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Trailer Brakes - Passengers Side Electric Brake Assembly - 23-455

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Dexter 10-inch, right hand passenger side manual adjust, electric trailer brake assembly for 4,400 pound axles. Now electric brakes are easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. And electric brakes require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. You don't have to have any brake actuator or hydraulic lines with electric brakes.

Now the brake shoes on this assembly, they are lined with an automotive grade friction material and that friction material is fully bonded. It's not riveted to the shoes so it gives you a lot longer life, more breaking torque. This assembly here is a manual adjustment brake. You can see at the very bottom is your adjustment wheel to adjust your brakes. It does require periodic manual adjustment.

Now this part is a 10 inch by 2 and a quarter inch passenger side, electric trailer brake assembly. So it's a right hand passenger side. And the way you can tell that, now when you get a brand new assembly, it'll have a sticker on it that'll tell you that. But if that sticker wasn't there, just a quick way to tell is if you look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe, this pad goes from here to here. This one goes from here to here.

So this is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is your primary shoe and that'll always face the front of the trailer. So that'll tell you that it goes on the right hand passenger side of the trailer. If you notice the mounting hardware's included, comes with the four nuts that you'll put this onto your four bolt brake mounting flange. Put your nuts on to tighten them down.

This part is made in the USA. A few specs, we mentioned the size of this assembly is a 10 inch by 2 and a quarter inch. And what that size means, the 10 inch is the diameter, which is measured from this shoe to this shoe. So if we put a rule on it, you can see there's your 10 inch diameter. And the two and a quarter inch is the width of the brake pad on the shoe. There's your two and a quarter inch width. Now the application for this assembly, it fits axles that are manufactured prior to May of 2009. Now this one will not work with the Al-Ko 4,400 pound axles due to clearance issues with the brake mounting flange. But it will work with the Lippert 4,400 pound axles regardless of the year manufactured. We mentioned four bolt mounting flange. I am gonna give you the measurement between those bolts so you know what you're getting. And they're actually the same if you measure them center-to-center horizontally and center-to-center vertically. So if we put a ruler on it you'll be able to see center-to-center 2 and 13/16ths of an inch. Vertically center-to-center also 2 and 13/16ths of an inch. Now the wheel size used on this is 14 inch to 15 inch wheels. Axle rating again is 4,400 pounds. Now these are electric brakes. You'll notice the two wires in the back here. These need to be connected. One of them goes to the ground, the other goes to the brake feed for power and they're the same color wire. So you can use either wire for either function. Now we mentioned this is the right hand passenger side assembly. We also sell the left hand driver side assembly and that's part number 23-454. And that's sold separately on the website and it is listed on this product page as a related product. But that should do it on the review of this Dexter 10-inch right hand, passenger side manual adjust, electric trailer brake assembly for 4,400 pound axles..

I would have given 5 stars if Dexter offered self-adjusting brakes in the 4400lbs model. Looks like a quality part, but won't be able to install until I get further along with the restoration project. Just glad this weight rating still available.

  • Adding Electric Drum Brakes to Tandem Axle Magic Tilt Boat Trailer
Electric drum brakes are being found as original equipment on boat trailers more and more often, for their simpler installation and lower overall cost. They are used with brake controllers like the reliable Prodigy P2 # 90885. The linked article covers the entire process of adding electric drum brakes to a trailer and the linked page will display all electric brakes for 4400-lb-rated axles, which are the 10 x 2-1/4-inch size. If you have Dexter axles made before May 2009 you can use left...

  • Replacement Electric Brakes for a 2007 Jayco Jay Feather EXP w/Dexter Manual Adjust & EZ Lube Axle
Typically to determine the correct size of brakes on your 2007 Jayco Feather EXP you have to pull off the wheel and the hub and drum assembly and measure according to the attached diagram. You will also want to know the capacity of your axle, this will be listed on a placard on the axle itself. While under the trailer you also may be able to look at the back of the brake assembly for the make and model number stamped into it. With that information, I may be able to determine what brakes...

  • Brake Assembly Mounting Flange Bolt Pattern on 3500lb Axle
For a 3500 lb axle, having a mounting bolt pattern of 2-7/8 inches is typical. The only exception would be for a few 4400 lb axles, which use a mounting bolt pattern of 2-13/16. I checked with Dexter Axle, and was told that the 69-47 designation wasn't an axle part number. On the back of the axle tube, there should be a nine digit serial number. If you can provide that number, I can certainly check back with them. The easiest way to determine which assembly you need would be to remove...

  • Is the Bolt Hole Pattern for a Brake Assembly the Same as the Wheel
The 2-7/8" bolt pattern for the brake assemblies # AKEBRK-35R-SA and # AKEBRK-35L-SA as well as the 2-13/16" bolt pattern for the brake assemblies # 23-454 and # 23-455 has to do with where the mounting bolts are for the assemblies to the brake flange on your spindle (see attached photo). The bolt pattern for your wheels has to do with the bolt locations on the hub and drum assembly. For example, the Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-407-5UC3-EZ that is rated for 4,400 lb axles has a 6...
