Video Transcript for Swagman Original 3 Bike Rack Review

Today we'll be taking a look at the Swagman Original Hang Style Original 3 Bike Rack for 2 inch receivers, part number S64152-2. The Swagman Original is going to be great for 3 bikes ranging from sizes of your mountain bikes, road bikes, children's bikes, even your women's bikes or alternative frame bikes. It's going to be great for your cars, trucks, SUV's, even your RV's and trailers. The Swagman Original is going to have that sturdy steel construction and a nice premium powder coat finish to resist a lot of the rust and corrosion that you'll see out on the road. These vinyl cushions are going to be great for clamping on the top of your bike to and the bottom as as well as leaving grooves and space for all your cables on the bottom side. This rack is going to have a few nice features as far as security goes. You're going to have a 5/8 inch hole here on top where you can insert any sort of padlock that you may have. We have one laying around here so let's go ahead and see how that looks.

You can also get a locking hitch pin or anti-rattle bolt for the back side here that's going to be part number S64027. Just to give you an idea how this rack is going to fit with your vehicle, we'll get a measurement from the center of the pin hole to the front side of the rack where the tube goes up. It's going to be about 13 7/8 inches. Keep that in mind with your spare tires and any other accessories that you may have on the back of your vehicle. Just keep in mind when using this on you fifth wheels or any of your trailers, if you're going to have a receiver on the back end of that, you're going to want to have at least 15 inches of ground clearance on the back side. That's going to be from the ground to the bottom side of the shank. The Swagman Original is going to have a limited lifetime warranty through the manufacturer. Now that we've gone over some features, let's take a look at how it's installed. First take your 2 inch shank and insert it into your 2 inch receiver.

Once we have our pin holes lined up, we'll then take our anti-rattle bolt, which is going to be a 7/8 inch socket or size and place it through and thread it in. This anti-rattle bolt is going to pull the side of the shank against the side of the receiver, tying our shank in with the vehicle suspension and giving you a nice solid ride. Once we have our anti-rattle bolt tightened up, we'll check and make sure that we have everything in place and place our clip on the end. Now well go ahead and load up some bikes on our new Swagman rack. First think we'll need to do is go ahead and turn the thumbscrews or dials on the top an pull them off once we have them off, we'll go ahead and lift off the top plate so we can expose the nice vinyl cushions to lace our bikes on. Now we'll go ahead an load up our bikes. Placing our first bike on which is going to be a road bike. Our next bike will be mountain bike and you can alternate the handle bars so that you don't have them bumping against each other.

You'll see that when you line up our handle bars on the other side of the tire, that way they sit nice on our rack and they're not pushing against each other and forcing each other off the rack. Just make them so they accommodate each other nicely, like so. Our next bike is going to be a girl's bike. We're going to be using the Swagman Bike Adapter, part number 64005. This bike adapter bar is going to be perfect for your women's bikes, child's bikes and even your alternative frame bicycles. Now with our bikes loaded up, we will then take our plate that we pulled off and place it back over the top of our frames. Once you've done so, then take your thumb screws and place them back over the top and thread them down to secure the bikes in place. With our bike now secure, let's take it out on our test course and see how the new Swagman Original performs. Here on our slalom, this will simulate side to side action as going around corners or making basic maneuvers. Now on to our alternating speed bumps.

This will simulate the twisting action of going over uneven pavement or through potholes. Finally, our solid speed bumps that will simulate going over a curb or out of parking lot. That's going to complete today's look at the Swagman Original Hang Style 3 Bike Rack for your 2 inch receivers, part number S64152-2.

This is a solid and well-engineered bike rack. I bought it because of the design. I need a bike rack to carry in the back of my pickup truck along with luggage on trailer trips. Bikes go on a rack I leave on the back of the trailer. When trailer is parked and we're ready to go biking I'll pull this new rack out of the pickup truck bed and put in on the truck. More convenient than my other racks, one of which is an extremely heavy platform style rack and the other one which has two upper support arms which doesn't fit well in the pickup bed along with the other items. This one lays flat, taking up minimal space. 121522

Order shipped same day. Product is well built and works very well with 5th wheel. This resolves the issue of placing bikes in truck bed. Very happy with product. Thanks etrailer for your quick response. 541277

This rack worked perfectly. It had plenty of clearance between my tailgate and itself. I also bought the leveling bars for each bike and they also worked perfectly. They made bike even with the top of the tailgate and I could only see some of the handlebars. There was no excess movement to cause me any distractions while driving. It’s made out of heavy duty steel tubing and easily held the weight of our bikes. It was super easy to put together and attach to my hitch. You will probably need a 2.5 - 2 in. reducer like I did. Overall, this was a great product. I’d recommend it to anyone. 561184

Easy to assemble and use. Great for hauling kids bikes or any standard bike without a thin walled frame. It clamps down the bike with confidence and simplicity. Swagman is simple and bombproof. 571409

This is a very durable bike rack. It is well designed and built with overall quality in mind. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a strong rack to carry 2 or 3 bikes. It was easy to assemble and simple to mount on my truck and RV 2 inch receiver. 134498

Product is better and sturdier than I expected. I was shocked at how fast it shipped. It was extremely well packaged. I have not seen this type of care in shipping for a long time. I am very happy with the product especially at the price. It had several features I was looking for: 1. It is rigid to the hitch with no flopping. 2. The bikes can be securely locked to the carrier. 3. The unit can easily be locked to the hitch (with the additional locking bolt that I would recommend purchasing. 4. When not in use it can easily be stored FLAT in the storage area of my RV without taking up a lot of room. I would highly recommend etrailer and this bike carrier. I will be doing additional business with etrailer in the future! 485523

I used it to haul my bike down to Florida from Minnesota on the back of my RV. With the base being screwed tight to the hitch it traveled with zero problems. Very heavily built. Stores flat against the wall in the storage area underneath. I am extremely pleased with this product!

Very, very heavy. When you put your bike on the rack, the bike hangs very low. I have a Honda CRV and put my women's bike on the rack. When I drive over even a little teenie bump, the tires of the bike have hit the road and bent the bike. I will never buy this again. There is no way to adjust the height of the pipe coming out of the hitch. Terrible design. Very, very, very heavy. And I do not have a fancy bike but I was on the Interstate and hit a little tiny bump......at 55 miles per hour, it bent my entire tire and rim! Cost me over $100 to fix it. Never again. Only a child's bike will work on this. DO NOT BUY this bike rack. 573861

Comments

It sounds like you need an adapter bar to keep the bikes level on the bike rack. The adapter bar will give the bike a level hanging surface so they are not crooked on the bike rack. It should help them from hanging too low and creating ground clearance issues. I recommend the Kuat adapter bar part # UB01
Kuat Ubar Bike Frame Adapter Bar for Women's and Alternative Frame Bikes
$35.00
because it extends from 15 inches to 23 inches so it will work on adult womens bikes and childrens bike frames.

I purchased this as a gift for my boyfriend and it has been great! Mostly because it is very simple to assemble -- took about 10-15 minutes. Mounting the bikes was simple as well and had no issues with securing them properly. Great buy! 314367

It is a tough bike rack which I can use with my travel trailer. I would give it 5 stars but the rack does not swing down for unloading. However, I don't think there is rack suitable for a travel trailer which also swings down. E-trailer shipped the bike rack in a timely fashion and the rack is exactly as advertised. 514534

Comments

We do not have any bike racks that are travel trailer approved that swing away or down. If the bike rack is rated for motorhome, 5th wheel or camper use they have a fixed stinger that goes into the hitch receiver to avoid any excessive bouncing. We do have the Swagman trailhead part # S63381
Swagman Trailhead 4-Bike Rack for 2" Hitches - Non-Folding
$146.25
. This is a 4 bike rack where the arms fold down for storage but the whole rack does not tilt down or fold.

We ordered the Roadmaster dual hitch extension and the Swagman 3-bike rack for our Motorhome. We tow a vehicle and had our bikes on the back of our tow. They partially blocked our tow vehicle’s brake lights. We opted to get this assembly to attach to the coach and still be able to flat tow our vehicle. Assembly was easy, you will need two 5/8 hitch pins: 1 for the extension to the RV hitch and 1 to reattach your Blue Ox (or other flat tow assembly). Very sturdy construction. We are very pleased! 504673

Absolutely love this bike rack! i've tried a number of different models and this one is by far the easiest to use -- loading the bikes is a snap! and it is so secure that i never have any concerns about the bikes. Bought one years ago for my car and, when i bought my RV, i had to buy another for it! 725893

The bike rack is very substantial. I assembled it in less than 10 min. I took in on my first trip today loaded with 2 adult bikes and 1 children’s bike although I had to mount 1 of the bikes upside down they all stayed secure with no scratches. I am very pleased! 655477

by:

My only concern is that because we are going to use on our fifth wheel, it would be nice to be able to have choices on where you could put the connecting pin. It still appears to be far from the trailer. This is my second swagman, my other is over 20 years old and just broke on the way to our winter destination. I am wondering if I could have an additional hole drilled into the steel? 620371

This is a very well built bike rack with heavy powder coating for protection. I followed the instructions for assembly and would suggest that before you tighten any of the bolts you should assemble all of the parts and then tighten the bolts as instructed in the assembly instructions. We will be using this to haul our electric bikes on a motor home. 613574

A friend gave us their bike rack to travel from NY to SC. It was so flimsy and loose we did not use it. I borrowed my son's once in SC (this model), and it was simple and worked extremely well. I bought the same for our next trip to SC. It holds the bikes firmly with easy ability to lock bikes onto the rack, I just need to purchase a locking hitch pin. One drawback is that it does not tilt so you can't access cargo without removing the rack. Otherwise a good value! 577632

Comments

The locking hitch pin you will need for this bike rack part # S64152-2 is swagman threaded hitch pin lock part # S64027. This swagman bike rack does not tilt away for cargo access. I recommend swagman trailhead hanging bike rack part # S63365 with the tilt away feature. The trailhead tilts forward to allow easy access to vehicles rear cargo area. You will still need part # S64027 for the lock.

excellent product - I use this on a fifth wheel travel trailer, we went from south west Michigan to Maine and again to Key West Florida and had no problems at all. The only negative thing I would say, carry three bikes could get a little tight getting all three bikes on the rack. 542174

Great product! Works just as advertised. Very sturdy and secure. Will need to also purchase frame adapters if you have a womens or alternative style frame (any frame that is not straight across) Only problem is that the parts where the hitch receiver connects to the rack don't quite fit together. You have to bend metal out. (Difficult) This turned 15 minute job to assemble rack into a 1 hour job. 158255

Rack is stable but cotter pin to too weak, even thought the rack is bolted to hitch. The cotter pin should go through the bolt not around, just in case.Otherwise, great! 54223

Comments

I agree that the cotter pin is weak. Doesnt seem right that it goes around the pin, instead of going through the pin.

For what it is worth, we haven't seen around-the-pin clips fail any more than the throug-pin style. The nice thing about the around-the-pin style is that it can rotate and reduce the risk of bending the clip. With the through-pin, it is a lot easier to bend that clip.

So far, so good. It was shipped quickly, and it installed easily. I did take the advice of another reviewer and placed lock washers on to reduce the risk of loosening bolts. I had a welding professional look at the bumper to assure me that it was strong enough for the rack. I would say this is the most important step before anyone connects any rack to the back of a camper. 44397

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

I have been using this rack for a couple of seasons. Maybe a total of about five trips with the bikes mounted behind my trailer to a "CURT 4" BUMPER RECEIVER". I was so happy that I found a system to carry four bikes on my trailer. However the last trip that I used this product I lost all four bikes on Interstate 95. The pin/bolt sheered and I was dragging the bikes for a few miles before I realized what had happened. The situation was extreemly dangerous. I had to get out of my tow vehicle on the highway and disassemble the mangled bikes. I have come to realize that carrying bikes behind your trailer is very dangerous and this product is not adequate to do the job. I feel that the manufacturer should not be recommending to their customers that this product can be mounted behind a trailer. Please do your research before mounting or carrying anything behind your trailer. 30017

Comments

Some advice to anyone who may be using this rack. Please note that the weight limit is 35lbs. per bike. Always load the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle or trailer and the lightest bike on the cradle furthest from the vehicle.

Had a bad experience with this product myself. Installed a trailer hitch on the back of my Fifth Wheel so I could use this rack. I put four mountain bikes on this rack and drove 145 miles. got out of the truck and the vertical bar had bent about five inches and bikes were all scratched up and heading for the pavement. product not strong enough for trailer usage.

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

I missed two points when I ordered this bike rack ... 1 is that it is extremely heavy to lift and 2 the obvious but I missed it that the rack does not drop down ... like other racks I now own I was focused on the screw down holder which looks to be fine ... even for bikes I own that have different size cross bars The rack does sway from left to right ... just like my other racks ... great opportunity for Reese or someone to make a anti sway bar that would anchor on the vehicle hitch and connect to the vertical bike rack bar .. with a simple disconnect so the rack can be tilted Great service as usual from the people at eTrailer 262463

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

seems like a no-nonsense heavy-built rack. Exactly what I wanted. The four bolts that hold the frame together seem to be strong tempered steel, which is great. And the clamps for the bike seem very strong and simple too. But the pin bolt, which everyone complains about, seems like it's indeed a weak point. I never trust simple clips to hold a pin in. And the pin is actually a bolt with threads. If you thread it in, it defeats the purpose of the bolt being loose so it can float around. And I would expect the stress to be greater on the threaded side, causing the bolt to bend. And anyways, vibration will eventually loosen the threads on the bolt and now you're hoping the catch pin holds. I ordered a heavy duty locking pin. I think it's a great bike rack, but they should really sell it without the pin, which gives it negative reviews. The price is decent without a pin. 208910

The Bike Bunk is adjustable so it will fit most a-frames between 14- and 55-inches wide and it offers simple bolt-on installation. Once mounted you can install in its 2-inch receiver opening a 2-inch RV-rated bike carrier of your preference,...

  • How to Determine Clearance Needed for Swagman Hitch Bike Rack S64152-2
  • It sounds like you have been using the 2-inch Swagman Original bike rack # S64152-2 with a 1-1/4-inch to 2-inch hitch extender/adapter like # HTAD or # HT5R. Both of these adapters allow 2-inch accessories to be used in a 1-1/4-inch hitch. While these items do both adapt size and provide extension (and the # HT5R also adds rise for more ground clearance) all such adapters will add potential for more motion of the loaded accessory, just as you noted. The other downside to adapters like...

  • Replacement Parts for a Swagman Original 3 RV Trailer Hitch Receiver Mounted Bike Rack
  • To repair your Swagman Original 3, part # S64152-2, you'll need a top plate, part # P120. This will provide the mounting point to maintain your bikes on the rack. Additionally, you'll want a locking knob, part # P1040 to replace the lost one. Additionally, you'd possibly like replacement pads, available as part # P0023

  • Recommended RV-Rated Hitch Bike Racks for 5th Wheel Trailer
  • You will want to select an RV-rated hitch bike carrier for use on the back of your 5th wheel trailer. Standard bike racks made for use on cars and SUVs are not suitable for use on a trailer due to the additional stresses found at the rear of such vehicles. The extra stress results from the greater distance between the rear axle and the hitch. This extra distance translates into more leverage on the rack, and a regular rack made for cars could be destroyed by the forces at the back of a...

  • Recommended Bike Carrier To Use Between RV And Towed Vehicle
  • In order to be able to carry bikes between your towed vehicle and the RV you will first need a dual receiver for your trailer hitch. I recommend the Curt Dual 2 inch Receiver Tube Adapter, part # D-192. the bottom receiver is used for the tow bar and the upper receiver has a 2 inch receiver for the bike carrier. Bike carriers need to be RV rated because they are built to take on the added stress at the rear of the RV or motorhome. The carrier I recommend is the Swagman Original,...

  • Recommended RV Hitch and RV Hitch Bike Racks
  • We offer hitch receivers for use on RVs that you can see on the linked page. Both bumper-mount and frame-mount type hitches are made and it will be a good idea to check with your trailer's manufacturer to confirm which type is best for your particular RV. Examples of both types are parts # C19101 which fits 4 x 2-inch bumpers (as long as they are NOT a C-channel type) and # UF35-946403 which fits trailer frames between 47-1/8- and 77-inches wide (measured outside edge to outside edge). • Recommended Hitch and 2-Bike Rack for 2016 Ford Edge Sport
  • For your 2016 Ford Edge Sport I recommend the 2-inch Class III hitch option over the 1-1/4-inch Class II since it will give you a better safety margin for handling the weight of your chosen bike rack and bikes. Plus a 2-inch hitch will be able to work with more accessory items, such as a cargo carrier like # C18153, in case that is ever in your future plans. Considering the small price difference, a Class III hitch like # 75234 is usually the better choice. In terms of appearance, the Draw-Tite...

  • RV Hitch Bike Rack Recommendation for a Class C Motor Home
  • If you are concerned about the bikes swaying, I recommend the Swagman platform style bike rack, item # S64663. This rack will install in the hitch and holds the bike at the wheels and frame so there is no chance of the bikes contacting each other or the rear of the vehicle. If you would like a rack with frame mount cradles the Swagman Original 3, item # S64152-2, is a good choice. This rack is sturdy enough for your application, but will allow some movement of the bikes when starting...

  • We offer several options in a bolt-on frame-mount hitch receiver for use on the back of your 5th wheel trailer. Just click on the link provided to see them all. You'll want to check a few things before deciding on your preferred hitch. First, you want to measure your 5th wheel's frame, from outside to outside. Our available hitches can fit frame widths from 18-inches all the way up to 72-inches. Second you'll want to check with the trailer manufacturer (giving them your VIN) to find...

The ladder bike rack and other bumper mount options only allow you to carry 2 bikes. If you have the proper bumper then this is the perfect bike rack for you. • Hitch Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a Class B RV
  • I will be happy to help. The first piece of information that will help you choose a bike rack is that not all bike racks can be used on RVs, even if it is a Class B RV. On RVs and trailers, there is excess bouncing and movement at the trailer hitch. Most hitch mount bike racks cannot handle the excess bouncing and would likely fail during your trip causing expensive damages. We do have several bike racks that are rated for use on a RV. I have attached a link to these bike racks for...

  • Yes, the Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter # RM-077-2 can be used simultaneously with both a hitch-mount bike rack in the upper receiver and a tow bar in the lower receiver to flat tow your dinghy. However, the Swagman XC 2-Bike Platform Style Rack # S64650 cannot be used on the rear of your RV. Bike racks that are to be used on motorhomes and RVs must be built specially to withstand the vertical and lateral forces found at the rear of such vehicles. In the same way that a seat...

  • Thank you for providing a photo of your Aliner's spare tire mount on its rear bumper. Any bike rack designed for use on the rear of a camper or trailer has to be specially built to withstand the forces encountered at the rear of such vehicles. Much in the same way that the last seat in a school bus or the last car in a roller coaster gets a rougher ride than those up front, any accessory item installed at the rear of a trailer will be subjected to strong lateral and vertical forces that...

I recommend using tie-downs like # 05605 to secure your bikes in place and # e98891 cable lock to deter theft. There is not a 6 bike RV carrier available, so I recommend using a second rack and putting it in a separate location. • Recommended Swagman Bike Rack for Use on Trailer
  • The most important aspect of the Swagman Trailhead # S63381, Original 3-bike # S64152-2, and Original 4-Bike # S64400 is that they are all rated and approved for use on a trailer like what you have. Because of the extra bounce and stress that is put on a bike rack at the back of a trailer when compared the back of a standard passenger vehicle, only some racks are designed for this use and these all meet that requirement. Between these three option, I recommend going with the Swagman...

In this case I recommend taking a look at the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer Mounted Bike Carrier, # CC-275. When using a bike hitch rack on the back of an RV you will want to measure the ground clearance on your hitch to make sure it exceeds 15 inches. • Hitch & Bike Rack Recommendations for 2017 Forest River Flagstaff MAC206 LTD Pop-up Camper
  • A hitch bike rack made for use on a standard passenger vehicle cannot be used on the back of a trailer. The reason is that the further away from the rear axle a hitch is located the more stresses, both vertical and horizontal, will be placed on anything installed in that hitch. It is a matter of leverage, like when you slip a cheater bar over the end of a lug wrench. A standard hitch rack would be likely to suffer damage if used on the back of a pop-up, not to mention what this could do...
