Features to know about

Effortless Loading for Heavy E-Bikes: Hydro-Pneumatic Arms with One-Tap Release

Getting 60-plus-pound e-bikes onto a rack can be a struggle, but the Piston Pro X makes it simple. The ratcheting arms deploy automatically with a tap of the lever, powered by hydro-pneumatic struts that open smooth and steady every time. Kashima-coated pistons keep friction low so the motion stays controlled even after dirt and road grime build up. Just tap the levers, set the bikes down, and rotate the arms into place—no wrestling or heavy lifting.

Stable and Scratch-Free Transport: U-Shaped Wheel Bridges with Tire-Size Selector

This rack holds bikes by the wheels instead of the frame, so fancy paint and carbon tubes stay untouched. Each U-shaped arm has a labeled bridge for common tire sizes—20", 24", 26", 27.5", and 29"—that locks in without tools. The grooved trays let you position the bikes front-to-back to avoid handlebar clashes and fit everything from narrow 18c road tires to 5" fat tires with ease.

Rear Access Without Unloading: Spring-Loaded Tilt and Fold Pedal

When you need to reach the cargo area mid-trip, the Piston Pro X tilts down even with both bikes loaded. A spring-loaded hand-and-foot pedal sits right where you can reach it—no crawling between frames to release it. When it’s time to park, fold the rack up to keep it compact and out of the way.

See and Be Seen: Integrated LED Brake Lights and Turn Signals

Built-in LED lighting syncs directly with your vehicle through a 4-way flat plug, adding extra brake, turn, and running lights right on the rack. They’re visible whether bikes are loaded or not, boosting visibility for anyone following behind.

Locked Down and Quiet on the Road: Flatlock Cam with Keyed-Alike Security

The Flatlock cam system tightens inside the hitch to stop rattle and sway, keeping the ride quiet. A keyed-alike hitch lock and braided 12-mm cable lock secure both the rack and bikes so everything stays put. The aluminum and steel build, finished in a gray powder coat, resists corrosion for the long haul.

A marvel of a rack, and greta service

by:

EXTREMLY easy to load and unload my e-b ikes

by:

Assembly was painless and the product is solid.

by:

Quick delivery. It was pretty easy putting it together everything was packaged well

by:

Just as advertised if not better. Outstanding overall experience.

by:

Great service and great product.

by:

Truly fantastic product (despite a bit of a budget killer). Works great!

by:

Very easy to put together. Solid rack. Had an NV 2.0 already but wanted the newer rack with the lighting as I think its more safe

by:

Seems very well made and easy to use, I also have Kuat NV 2.0 , both are great racks

by:

I looked most of the no touch racks. Most of the other racks needed two hands to release them from the tire and kuat didn’t. The rack is built very well and would think it would last a lifetime. Even though this one is one of the higher priced racks I’m not disappointed in the build quality

by:

Awesome rack, awesome experience. The rack was available on Amazon with Prime shipping. etrailers had the same price, free shipping and a faster delivery time than Amazon. Support a business other than Amazon and you won’t be disappointed.

by:

It seems to be very well built. Little heavier than I thought and instructions pretty confusing.

by:

etrailer was very easy to work with and answered all my questions quickly. etrailer knew the answers to my questions about the Kuat Bike Rack but oddly the person at Kuat did not. The boxes arrived in perfect condition.

by:

Only rack we found that could carry our heavy ebikes. Love the locking mechanism!! Even works with our fenders. Wish it had place to mount license plate.

Well, you're in luck! Kuat actually offers a license plate relocation bracket for the Kuat Piston Pro X Bike rack, part # KU98VR! Check out the License Plate Holder for Kuat Piston Pro X, part # KU49RR. It looks like it's been a while since you ordered the rack, let me know if you need any assistance in getting the bracket ordered.

by:

Rack showed up and is exactly what we were looking for. Fast shipping 2 days from Utah to Central Washington. Great communication and updates. Will definitely order from etrailer in the future.

Awesome piece of equipment.

@Matthew I couldn't agree more! You picked one of the best racks out there. What kind of bikes are you riding?

by:

I’ve had several bike racks over the years, but none have been easier to assemble. The quality of the materials used to make this rack are very high by my standards. Not a cheap rack by any means, but I’m a firm believer in “you get what you pay for”.

After a year I’m still floored by the quality, and ease of use. Had a pinched wire for the tail lights, and Kuat sent out a replacement set of wires no questions asked for free. To notch company!

by:

It's really a beautiful bike rack, and the lights work great. However, it blocks my car's back-up camera, regardless whether I keep it in up or down position. And to open my car's hatch, rack must be in down position. Things to keep in mind.

by:

Kuat Piston Pro X bike rack so far exceeds expectations on 2023 Tesla Model Y! Fabulous wellbuilt, solid platform 2 bike hitch rack w tilt & locks. Thrilled on all accounts: excellently presented product info, easy to follow lit & videos for installation & convenient access to customer service. Delivered in 3 days. Quick install. Just needed to pick up 4 flat to 7 way adaptor for hooking up electrical lights in stock at [online]. Lights awesome unique feature! Visibility from rear camera good. Contrary to video & booklet instructions may be best to insert hitch pin through holes in hitch receiver and piston shank as 1st step. Was more difficult doing this as one of the last steps. Also would be good to know about how to acquire extra set of keys. Glad to have piece of mind of bikes being tight & secure.

by:

Best bike rack I have ever owned (and I have owned several really good bike racks). It is a substantial rack and well made. If there is any downside, it is the price, but quality shows and their customer service is second-to-none. The arms capture the wheels very well, but might take some getting used to. The flatlock system and the rear LED lights are innovative and add value to the rack.

@B Nice! Hell yea! Awesome! I own a Kuat rack too, the NV 2.0 and I can say the same thing about my rack. Way better than any other rack I have owned, and there have been a few lol. Glad to hear you are happy with your rack! Come back anytime you need anything.

by:

Excellent build quality ! Box and packaging were exceptional, received in perfect condition! Cannot wait to get out on the trails! Etrailer website and videos truly give you everything you need to make and informed buying decision, thank you !

by:

I love this bike rack.

by:

Very sturdy and has worked out well. However, I wouldn't trust the bikes free-standing on the racks without a strong strap/bungee. Carried an e-bike to Alaska and back, over some pretty rough roads, and had no problem as long as the strap was on. If you're not handy, have a bike shop put it together for you. Getting everything tightly bolted matters.

by:

This is the coolest bike rack ever. I bought it with the swing out arm, also from Kuat so I could gain access to the stored items in the back of the Jeep. It worked out great! It even has led lights which help since I use a bike cover which obscures the Jeeps tailights.

Hi Craig, I can supply that. The distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper on the # C77MJ is approximately 3-1/4". If you want the clearance it is 12" from the ground to the top inside of the receiver tube. What do you plan on using the hitch for?

  • Preventing Trailer Park Lamp Fault On Dash Of Ford Edge When Using Kuat Piston Pro Bike Rack
You are going to want to use a 7-Way to 5-Way/4-Way Trailer Adapter for Vehicles with Lamp-Out Sensors # C35FR when connecting to the Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack # KU98VR. This adapter has resistors built in to trick the vehicle in seeing a larger power draw so it does not send the message you are getting. This will be needed on any trailer or auxiliary lights you use with LED lights to prevent the message on the dash of your 2020 Ford Edge ST with the factory towing package.

  • Can Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack Be Used at Rear of Flat Towed Vehicle
Hey Don, yes the Kuat Piston Pro X Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # KU98VR that you referenced is rated for use at the rear of a flat towed vehicle. It might seem weird that some racks aren't rated for this but the reason for this is because flat towed vehicles have a tendency to kind of snake back and forth left and right which puts added stress on it. What kind of bikes are you planning on carrying with it?

  • Solution for 4-Way Adapter With Resistors for 2025 Bronco Sport & Kuat Piston Pro-X With LED Lights
Hey Stephen! There are no direct adapters but we can pair two together to make this work. You can plug the Hopkins Plug-In Trailer Connector Adapter # HM54RV into your 4-way which will convert it to just the light functions on a 7-way. Then plug the Curt # C35FR into the 7-way end of that adapter to get the load resistors and stop the warning on your dash. The only other option would be to directly wire in load resistors # DI34ZR. Let me know if you need anything else.

  • Can Kuat Piston Pro Bike Rack be Used at Rear of 25 ft Sprinter Camper
Hey Scott, this is a really great question. So a 25 foot long Sprinter is only a little bit longer than a standard Sprinter which is perfectly fine to use the Kuat Piston Pro bike rack # KU98VR to it's full capacity of 67 lb per bike. The big issue with RV applications and bike racks is the extra length of RVs exaggerates the movement of accessories in the hitch which puts more stress on the bike rack. That shortest length Sprinter is only 5 feet shorter than what you have now and that...

With the arms folded and the rack dropped, the Kuat Piston Pro X # KU98VR measures 10-3/4" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the top of the rack (so 11-3/4" from the bottom of your hitch opening). I put should in quotation marks as I was unable to find anything about the EV models having different capacities, so I would definitely check with a Kia dealer on that part. Good question, and it is not a necessity for your car to have a 4-way flat trailer connector in order to use the Kuat Piston Pro X bike racks. The 4-way connector that plugs in between the bike rack and the 4-way on your car (if you had one) comes separately in a parts bag, so it is not actually attached to the rack. I checked with Kuat and the Piston Pro Bike Rack item # KU76ZR or the item # KU98VR do not work with class C motorhomes only class B with a lower 42 lbs capacity. The reason for this is that the bike rack is not designed to withstand the additional movement and contorting at the rear of a class C motorhome. This is also what causes the weight reduction for class B motorhomes. The RV capacity being lowered is common amongst the bike rack's available with a ramp. Kuat does not have an alternative...

Not every bike rack is rated for the rougher ride quality at the rear of a motorhome which is why the Kuat NV # NV22G is not motorhome approved. The ride quality is rougher there due to the longer distance between the rear axle and the rear of the vehicle which causes the movement from bumps to be exaggerated. Similar to how the rear seats of a school bus are much rougher. With that said Kuat has their Piston Pro X bike rack part # KU98VR listed as compatible with motorhomes and since is...
