Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack In Use

The Yakima HoldUp is a premium, tray-style bike rack that lets you carry 4 bikes using your vehicle's hitch. This rack is specifically designed to carry bikes with big tires and wide handlebars, but it will carry just about any bike, including those with wheels from 20" to 29", carbon frames, disc brakes, thru axles, or full suspensions.

Removable 2-Bike Add-On

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Removable 2 Bike Add-on

The rack includes a 2-bike add-on that installs easily onto the base rack. When it's not needed, simply remove the add-on with the included special tool and throw it in your trunk or leave it at home. To install the add-on on your HoldUp, simply remove the endcap from the bike rack base, slide the add-on's shank into the hole on the bike rack, and secure the shank with a bolt that comes with the add-on.

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Safety Flag and Clearance Lights

The add-on includes a safety kit with 2 red LED lights and a flag. The lights and flag ensure that the rack is visible to other vehicles on the road.

Wheel-Mount Design for Easy Bike Loading

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Large Front Wheel Holders

The HoldUp is easy to load, even if your bikes have monster wheels. The deep, contoured front wheel cradles accommodate just about any wheel out there, and the pivoting arms with StrongArm technology ensure that your bikes are held firmly in place.

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Ratcheting Arm

To load a bike, simply place your front wheel in the holder, rotate the pivoting arm up and over the wheel, and press down firmly on the ratcheting hook. To release the hook, simply press the built-in red button and slide the hook up and off your wheel.

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Adjustable Rear Wheel Cradles

Large rear wheel holders allow the HoldUp to accommodate a wide variety of bike wheelbases. These wheel holders pivot front to back, adjusting automatically to your wheel size - no need for sliding and tightening. Secure the wheels in place with the ratcheting straps built into each holder.

Yakima HoldUp Ratcheting Arm No Frame Contact

Mounting bikes by the wheels helps prevent any scratches or scuffs to the paint. The ratcheting hooks are padded, however, so they won't mar your wheels. And the pivot mechanisms in the arms are overbuilt to ensure they keep functioning smoothly over a lifetime of hard use.

Fully Adjustable Bike Trays

Yakima HoldUp Adjustable Bike Trays

The wheel trays on the HoldUp are fully adjustable to ensure that you have all the space you need when mounting bikes with mammoth handlebars, such as a 29er. To adjust a wheel tray, loosen the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the rack base and slide the tray left or right to achieve the desired spacing. Retighten the bolts and you're ready to roll with optimum handlebar clearance and no fear of bike-to-bike contact during transport.

Complete Security

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Built-in Cable Locks

The HoldUp has a cable lock built into the end of each pivoting arm. These cables loop through your bike frames and attach to posts on the bike rack arms to secure your bikes in place. The cables store in the arms when not in use.

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Locking Hitch Pin

The rack also has a HitchLock hitch pin that allows you to lock the rack to your vehicle. The threaded pin also works as an anti-rattle device to reduce noise and movement of the rack when it's mounted in your trailer hitch receiver.

The cable locks and HitchLock hitch pin include keyed-alike Same Key System (SKS) lock cores. These cores can be swapped out to make all your Yakima products keyed alike.

Tilting Design and Compact Storage

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Folded for Storage

The HoldUp stores more compactly than similar platform-style racks, a features a spring-loaded pin at the base that lets you fold the rack up against the rear of your vehicle when it's not in use. First rotate the front wheel holders inward and tilt the rear wheel holders inward, then rotate the pivot arms down and use the ratcheting hooks to secure the arms to the rear wheel holders. Once the arms are in place, pull the pin and fold the rack up against your vehicle.

Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack Tilted for Rear Cargo Access

The same pin can also be used to tilt the rack down 20 degrees for easier bike loading. The tilting feature can also be used when the is rack fully loaded, so you can gain easier access to your vehicle's rear cargo area without unloading your bikes.

Seems like a solid rack. Really heavy and bulky which I was not expecting. You essentially have to mount the 2 bike rack to the car then slip in the 2 bike add-on. Lifting the 4 bike rack as assembled is doable but triccky. Still much better for my beloved bikes than the 4 bike cradle racks which beat the bikes up as they rub each other. Warning: the nut in the receiver part of the rack had steel shot beads stuck in the grease so I couldn't thread the bolt in. I had to disassemble the nut holder and pick the steel beads out with a dental pick. 412255

I ordered the bike rack around 11pm on Saturday and it was delivered to me the following Thursday free of charge. The two boxes were in perfect condition and so was the rack. It was very easy to put together. I had read about some other customers having some trouble with the assembly but for me everything went together correctly and quickly. I took my Fuji traverse 1.1 for a test run on it around my town. It takes about 10 seconds to secure the bike to the rack. The bike was held in place very well and I’m looking forward to using it to transport my bikes back and forth from Rhode Island to New Hampshire this summer. It appears to be a very sturdy and well built rack. Too this point I am extremely happy with this purchase and I will give some more feedback after I have taken it on a few trips with all four bikes on it. 511045

Been a Yakima user for some time. Last bike rack was the Doubledown 4. Great rack but with the newer bike frames having top bars in different shapes and sizes, putting bikes on the Doubledown was a challenge. Had to go to a platform rack. Holdup was the fit. Carries 2 kids bikes without issues as well as my 29” and 27.5”. It is big and heavy but is solid and stable. Just makes it so much easier to carry 4 bikes. Just did a 500 mile round trip drive with them and no issues. Built in security cables is a nice feature. I did change out the two SKS cores to match up with the others. I’ll need to replace the stabilizer pin’s holder. It’s make out of plastic and broke right when I pulled out the pin so the cable is just hanging now. If I had to do it again, I’d buy it again. etrailer has quick shipping and great customer service. 723382

In one word: AWESOME! Not only is the Yakima rack awesome, but the delivery was lightning fast and the purchase experience was easy! I bought the rack with the additional add-on and they were easy to install and use! Definitely recommend! 162453

The bike rack works extremely well and fairly easy to get two adult bikes and two kids bike. The rack can be a bit heavy if lifting all in one piece. I would recommend installing the base, then the add on. Bikes are stable and secured. The locking cable is just long enough to go throught the frame, but don't expect both tires to be locked. The only issue I had is the stablizer bold for the add on did not fit through the base rack. I called supprot and I am going to make the hole slightly larger so it will fit. Support was very knowledge and had heard of one other issue like mine so they noted my account. etrailer is great in customer support and deliver. 821751

This is a great bike carrier. It is attractive and well built. It seems to be more heavy duty than the Thule two bike carrier I have, Yakima designed this four bike carrier very well and I am looking forward to lots of trips with the option of two or four bikes. The only problem I incurried was with the bolt that holds the carrier to the two inch hitch. The threads on the bolt and the threads on the nut inside did not easily tighten down. 419130

Looks good. I just assembled it but have not used it yet. I did find that the included wrench does not work on my Chevy 2500 pickup. There is not enough clearance for swinging the wrench. The large hole needs to be on top. Also, I am missing a couple parts in the box but I am wondering if they were eliminated. Waiting for a response from Yakima. Looking forward for having it for RAGBRAI next year. 284548

I own the older version and it has worked great for me. When I was considering moving up to a 4-bike rack, I decided to purchase the new version instead of the add-on to my rack. The new version had the 2 main features I was looking for: individual cable locks in each arm and adjustable trays. Ordering and shipping were easy and fast. Pre-order questions were answered quickly by etrailer.com staff. I look forward to using the full capacity of this rack when carpooling to upcoming races and the Chihuahuan Desert Bike Fest in Lajitas, TX this coming February. My only complaint is that I wish the SKS cores for all of the locks were matched so I would only need a single key instead of 2 keys. 232688

Review from a similar HoldUp in RV and Camper Bike Racks

Just received the bike rack, and the hardest part of putting it together was getting it out of the box. It seems to be very sturdy and put together well, one small complaint was the instructions indicate that the hitch pin anchoring the unit to the vehicle, should go from Right to Left. This did NOT work on my unit and after conferring with customer support it appears to be a manufacturing defect that should not impact the performance of the bike rack, by inserting the pin Left to Right, but does show a lower standard of quality control than what I would prefer. 771352

Review from a similar HoldUp in RV and Camper Bike Racks

The Yakima Holdup 2 Bike Hitch Mount works as advertised and from the product instructions had absolutely no trouble with the installation on a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland Summit. The mount is substantial, sturdy and simple. One comment for "etrailer.com"...DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING. The entire online experience was flawless. Your website was so easy, very informative and communication was "above and beyond" from searching, product research, explanations, ordering, email followups with order submitted, received, shipped, tracking (both on your site with a map of where the product currently is located and UPS tracking info) and delivery. I can't come up with any suggestions. I will definitely shop etrailer.com again...THANK YOU!!! 32420

The bike rack works as advertised, but the powder coating on the 2" steel was to thick and got stuck in the hitch. After an hour of trying to get it out and a call to a friend, I belt sanded the powder coating and it is all is good now. 546130

Great product!! I already had one of these bike racks I had been using for over a year and then someone rear-ended my car. the impact crushed the rack, but the rack did a great job protecting my bike so I only had minor damage on the bike. I ordered the exact same bike rack from etrailer.com and it was delivered almost immediately even with regular free shipping. 208848

Review from a similar HoldUp in RV and Camper Bike Racks

Just finished installing my new rack. I am VERY happy with the rack from installation to loading and unloading the bikes. Also I was very impressed with etrailer. I was looking for a specific rack and and only knew of one company that offered a rack that could be expanded to hold 2 more bikes. I was about to make my purchase of the very expensive other brand when etrailer suggested I look at the Yakima. I was very impressed with their videos and could see how the rack fit on my car so I purchased the rack and everything was exactly like they explained. I look forward to using this rack for a very long time. 785020

Excellent product. Well made. I am investing in a front wheel tie down to wrap around the wheel chock. It would be great if you included one similar to the one currently on the rear wheel chock. 83970

I have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery II with a rear tire mounting on the back gate. I do have a 2 receiver, I need a 4 bike holdup trailer hitch. Will the 2 receiver support the weight and will the unit clear the rear monstrous spare tire in the back?
-- comment by: Garry C - 09/08/2013

2039

Check the owners manual for the weight capacity of the hitch. Look for the tongue weight figure. As long as the rack and all the bikes combined weigh less than that figure, you are good to go. Whether or not it will clear the spare requires some measuring. I have added a link that shows you how to measure your clearance. Each of out bike racks that we list will have this clearance measurement in the description.

The bike rack exceeded my expectations! Well-designed and sturdy , yet not so heavy that I couldn't install it on my vehicle myself. Also E-trailer delivered the product as quickly as promised. 91902

Entirely disagree with the light enough comment- I purchased the 2 2 version and it has to weigh the most awkward 125 lbs Ive ever carried. Pay the extra $$ and get the KUAT aluminum version. Makes it even more of a PITA when trying to lift it up to vertical. Takes two people and cannot expect my wife and 7 yr old to manhandle it. Enginerds should have used a coil spring to assist with the lift. Also- after owning for 8 months, theres significant pooled corrosion i.e. orangered liquid oozes from every nook/cranny after a rain. They clearly did not protect the interior and expect that very soon the powdercoating will give way to flaking leafs of corroded metal. A huge shame for something that set me back so much $$$.KUAT- lighter and wont rust!

I spent nearly $800 for the 2 up with plus 2. Light enough, maybe if you only use the 2 bike version, it weighs over 50 lbs. I have the older grey 2 up along with the 2 plus making it hold 4 bikes. Combined they weigh about 100 lbs. No way one person can put the receiver in the hole. Very difficult for one person to raise up the unit from horizontal also. Two different size wrenches needed to take on and off bike as I have to remove the plus 2 first, 34 wrench then a 15/16 is needed on hitch. The plus 2 also does not come with a lock to secure it to the 2 up or a cable to lock the bikes to the rack. You will need to purchase them separately, another $50. I have also had two of the arms fail in a little over a year now, they have a lifetime warrantee but that gets old replacing them.Rack does hold bikes very good, but I am not happy overall with my purchase. Other models out there for this kind of money take a look.

Review from a similar HoldUp in RV and Camper Bike Racks

Received in good condition and quicker than promised. Product was easy to assemble and fitted to vehicle well. Loaded bikes easily and adjusted tray positions to avoid bikes coming in contact with each other (none come in contact with vehicle). Tilt down feature is great and allows access into back of vehicle. Test drove around neighborhood and bikes only moved slightly. Unloaded bikes easily and folded up carrier and drove around like that - no problems. Included cable locks are good but can't reach back tires, so need to buy another cable lock to fully secure the bikes - this is the only reason to downgrade one step from Excellent. 181598

The bike rack is awesome, well built and easy to assemble. The only issue that i have is that the product description says that these are suppose to have ratcheting straps to secure the tires and mine most definitely DOES NOT. Its not a big deal but still. 637274

Yakima recently made an update to the strap assembly on the wheel tray of the HoldUp. The old mechanism could stick and jam occasionally, so Yakima improved it. Well be updating our product description photos and videos shortly.

  • Best Bike Rack for 4 Bikes on 2020 Toyota Highlander Hitch
Yes the factory Toyota hitches have issues with Thule bike racks but I have a couple options that will work. The Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack # Y02443-2 fits your 2020 Toyota Highlander. This is a well built wheel mount bike rack which means no frame contact on your bikes. Compared to a frame mount or hanging design it can more easily accommodate women's, kids and alternative style frames. For your 2017 GMC Acadia, we carry a few platform bikes rack that would work well for your application. I like the Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack, # Y02443-2, for 2 Inch Receiver Hitches. The HoldUp uses ratcheted wheel hooks to secure the bikes to the rack. No frame contact with this bike rack. Another feature that I like about the HoldUp bike rack is the front section can be removed making it a 2 bike rack. So, you are getting two different bike rack all in one. I also like this rack...

  • What is the Function of the Pin on the Cable on the Yakima HoldUp Bike Carrier
The red handled pin with the cable on the Yakima HoldUp bike carrier # Y02443-2 is basically a failsafe pin. In the instructions they call in the stabilizer pin. Should something occur to the spring loaded pin that allows the carrier to fold up and down that pin with the cable will prevent the carrier from pivoting unexpectedly. You will want to use the pin as described in the installation instructions. It basically says to always use it. What makes it difficult to install or remove...

  • Recommended Options for Carrying 3 Bikes - 2 Pedego E-Bikes and 1 Schwinn.
I do have some great options for you, but since you are wanting to carry 2 E-Bikes and a Schwinn, the solution for a single bike carry is limited to the Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack # Y02443-2. This really is a great bike rack that has a 200 lbs weight capacity, but the problem is that it is a wheel mount and from my research it looked like all of your bikes have fenders which will not allow the wheel mount to work properly. If none of your bikes have a fender and the vehicle you will be using...

  • How Much Does the Yakima Hold-up Four Bike Carrier Weigh?
The Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack - Platform Style - Tilting - 2" Hitches # Y02443-2 has a weight of 98 lbs without bikes on it. The two parts weigh 49 lbs each so you can use the HoldUp2 bike alone at that weight or add the additional 2 bikes at 49 lbs additional carrier weight. When combined the rack has a total weight capacity of 200 lbs total with an individual bike weight maximum of 60 lbs. With all the packaging the shipping weight is 114 lbs.

  • Fit of Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack # Y02443-2 on 2012 Kia Sorento
The Yakima # Y02443-2 HoldUp 4 bike rack should work excellently in the hitch on your 2012 Sorento, but to be absolutely sure, you'll want to take a quick measurement that shows how far under the rear bumper the receiver opening is recessed. Find the hitch pin hole, and measure rearward until you clear the furthest rearward point of the back bumper. If this measurement is LESS THAN 7 inches, the HoldUp 4 will have enough clearance. I've linked you to an FAQ article that shows how...

  • Does the Yakima HoldUp Bike Carrier Come with a Locking Hitch Pin
The Yakima HoldUp bike carrier # Y02443-2 does come with a locking hitch pin that also acts as an anti-rattle device. It also comes with cable locks. All of he locks will use the same key and can be changed out to match locks on other Yakima accessories.

  • 4 Bike Rack Recommendation for 2012 Subaru Forester for Rear Cargo Area Access
Yes, as long as you have a 2 inch hitch installed on your 2012 Subaru Forester like the Draw Tite part # 75650 the Yakima Holdup4 part # Y02443-2 that you referenced wil fit and work well. If you had bikes loaded on this rack and went to tilt it down the weight of the rack and bikes would be more than you'd feel comfortable with as the rack alone weighs 100 lbs. A better solution for rear hatch clearance would be the part # TH9027XT which pivots out and away from the rear of the...

  • Recommended 4-Bike Rack For Bikes With 14" Wheels
There is a bike rack that will work for you, but the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443-2 will only fit wheel diameters between 20" and 29" so it will not be able to work with your bikes that have 14" diameter wheels. Instead I recommend going with a hanging rack, the Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack # Y02465. A hanging rack will mean you can fit any bikes regardless of their wheelbase or wheel diameter, though Bike Adapter Bar # Y02531 will be needed to carry a child's bike or women's bike with a step-through...

  • At What Angle Does the Yakima HoldUp Bike Carrier Tilt
The Yakima HoldUp bike carrier # Y02443-2 tilts down at about a 45 degree angle but it depends on the vehicle it is on and how high up the hitch is. If the hitch was low enough to the ground you would not be able to lower the rack all the way. It is unlikely that you will be able to open the rear hatch even with the carrier tilted down but we do have bike carriers that will allow you to open the rear hatch with or without the bikes loaded. I recommend going with the Apex swinging bike...

  • Does the Hitch Pin Bolt of the Yakima Holdup Bike Rack Have to Be Used
It is very important that you install and tighten down the hitch pin bolt of the Yakima Holdup Bike Rack part # Y02443-2 whenever you use it in any configuration. Failure to use it could potentially cause you to lose the bike rack while traveling. Failure to tighten it could cause the bolt to work it's way out and then lose the rack as well. I attached a review video for this rack for you to check out as well.

  • Yakima Holdup Vs Yakima FourTimer Bike Racks
The Yakima HoldUp, part # Y02443-2, has several advantages over the Yakima FourTimer, part # Y02469. I've linked to video reviews of both of these racks so you can see these differences in action. The first, and perhaps the most important, is the fact that the HoldUp has 4 individual, pivoting arms for securing the bikes. This allows it to secure the bike by its tire. You definitely want that option if you have bikes with carbon frames to prevent scratching the frames or if you have...

  • Are There Fat Tire Adapters for the Yakima HoldUp 4 Bike Rack
I have a solution for you, but there are not fat tire adapters for the Yakima HoldUp 4 # Y02443-2 since Yakima has a version of this rack that carries fat tire bikes with the Yakima HoldUp Evo 4 # Y02479-2. The HoldUp Evo offers the same tilt away, fold up features and a wheel mount for the bikes which makes it ideal for carbon frame bikes. It's essentially the same rack with the larger wheel holders to accommodate fat tire bikes, so it's a great substitute for the regular HoldUp 4. I've...

  • Is the Yakima HoldUp 4 Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Rack Good for Womens and Mens Beach Cruisers
The Yakima HoldUp 4, # Y02433-02435, is an excellent choice for your application. The 4 arms with padded hooks hold the bikes at the wheels, so the lack of a top bar on the womens bikes is not an issue. If your beach cruisers have fenders on them, the arms may not be able to hold the bikes correctly and you will need to look at a different rack style. This rack is very solid and there is a lot of space between the bikes so they will not hit each other in transit. The weight capacity...

  • Width of Wheel Trays on Yakima Holdup 4 Bike Rack
The wheel trays of the Yakima Holdup 4 Bike Rack will accommodate bikes with tires up to 3 inches in width. I spoke with one of my contacts at Yakima, who assured me that a childrens bike with a 38 inch wheelbase would fit with no problems whatsoever.

  • Choosing Between Yakima Y02443-2 HoldUp and Hollywood Racks HR1400Z for Bikes w/ Fenders
Wheel mount bike racks like the Yakima # Y02443-2 HoldUp don't work well with fenders. In order to securely hold the bike, the bike retaining hook needs to grasp the tires directly, right in front of the front wheel fork. A fender prevents direct contact with the tire, so I wouldn't recommend that type of rack for you. The Hollywood Racks SportRider SE you'd looked at, part # HR1400Z would work perfectly for bikes weighing up to 50 lbs apiece. A hitch and cable lock is included. If you...
