How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Replaced stock Air Stream power jack which started making grinding noises. New 4,000 pound jack easy install and works fine. Using it to lift 25ft trailer and 2500hd Silverado to attach anti-sway bars. Had to mount it sideways due to propane tank cover, but it works great. Had one of these on a larger trailer that a hurricane destroyed. Nice unit and easy install.

Overall the product does exactly what it's intended for and works well.
I however assumed that this would be a simple R&R for my camper and did very little installation research other that the video provided on etrailer' s website
Sadly it did not fit. Not at all. I didn't take into account that have a double framed hitch toyhauler. The baseplate on the factory leg was a TRIANGLE.....this unit was ROUND. Also the primary shaft was thicker than stock and would not drop down into place
I know modifying is frowned upon, but I found that ALL powered hitch legs I found have round mounting plates and it's not mentioned the leg tube is thicker than OEM?
Since NOT having a power lift wasn't an option for this camper application...too heavy in the front when ATVS loaded to lift for setting the equalizer hitch tension bars, I proceeded to modify by cutting the rear rounded mounting base ... square. Took off about 1/2 inch. Then I took my metal Dremel sanding bit and increased the hitch leg hole diameter slightly.
Took about 1 hr. Dropped it in. Wired it. Tested it. All good.
If you can't post this I understand, but take note that some of your website descriptions may need to be enhanced.
Thanks!

Bradley

Bulldog BD500199 installed on 2006 Jayco Jayflight 27BH. Bought this powered jack to replace the non-functioning electric jack that came with the camper we bought 6mo ago. We’ve been using the manual override on the old one, so having a working jack is going to be great:) Just installed this new unit yesterday, so have only used at home so far, but it seems to work very well. Speed is good. It has the drop leg with spring pin for quick adjustment which is cool. It has a built in light which is fairly bright and should come in handy for setting up at night. Installation was very easy. Literally had the old jack removed and new one in place in about 20mins and that included getting the jack stands set up. The hole in the A-frame was big enough for the larger diameter tube of the Bulldog unit, so no fitment problems. I’ve got photos showing the old unit and new. Forgot to take one with the jack removed. There was additional time wiring, but it was only another 20mins or so. Most of that time was spent deciding on routing and zip tying the wire. There is only one wire that hooks up to the battery positive post and there is an internal breaker in the unit so you don’t wire in an external fuse. Heads up there are no wire terminals in the kit, so you will need to have your own to crimp onto the wire. You’ll need a 10ga connector, likely a 5/16 or 3/8 ring terminal but could vary depending on your battery. The wire lead could have been another 12” longer, but it was just barely long enough to reach the positive post after I flipped the battery around to put the positive post on that side of the frame. Also should note that this unit has a dual mounting pattern that allows for turning the head unit 90deg to face sideways, which is what I ended up doing. Facing forward, the head of the jack was really tight up against the propane bottles/cover, so turning it sideways fit much better with our camper. Looks to be well built, so hoping it lasts a long time, and I’m looking forward to not using a manual override crank next time we go camping!

It’s been on our horse trailer & have had no issues. It was easy to install & use

Works fine- no issues. I like the labeling on the ret/ext rocker switch. I noe don't have to guess which side of the switch to push.

Works fine. I have no issues with it. It has good resistance to lateral forces and movement when decoupling from the hitch ball, even with wheel chocks in place. The body doesnt extend forward to interfere with my Dodge Durangos rear hatch opening.

@Jim We're glad the jack is working well for you!

I ordered the Reese Bulldog 4000lb power tongue jack on 6/2 and received it on 6/6, my second order from etrailer and it came just as fast as the hitch that I ordered from them previously. The jack was characteristically well packaged so everything was received in perfect condition. The installation took a half hour, including hitching the trailer up to my truck and unhitching after the swap out. I did read the instructions quickly before starting and I would recommend that anyone doing the installation do so as well, just to avoid any hick-ups. Overall it was a very easy installation. Because of limited space I did have to mount the jack sideways, so I appreciate that Reese gave me that option. The one item that I did not finish was a permanent power hook-up. The power wire provided was too short so I will be putting a connector inline so that I can route the wire to the battery terminal.

After a year of using the Bulldog tongue jack, I really appreciate how easy it makes hooking up the weight distribution bars on my hitch. Just push the Extend button and lift the connected trailer tongue until I can flex the weight distribution tension bars into place. These need to be standard equipment on travel trailers the crank jack that came with it was entirely inadequate/impractical for the work needed to lift the connected tongue to complete my hook-up.

Still keeps working. We had an issue with one of the jacks we purchased. The jack was replaced without charge and fast.

It’s a good, sturdy, and reliable Jack. I never have to worry if it’s going to work or not. Can’t say that about the cheap original equipment it replaced. It is slow but most are. I’m happy with this purchase.

Still working great the top level bubble faded from sun but stills works great

by:

It is much more quiet than the original jack. It performs exactly as expect.

by:

This has been a great trailer jack a year into installing it on my 12 x 6 enclosed cargo/camping trailer. The jack is out in the elements 24/7, gets used almost every weekend and is still going strong. I would definitely purchase this product again for my next trailer.

by:

Installed Bull Dog 4000 lb Jack today. Pretty straight forward install. I gave it a 4 star, everything worked fine. I would suggest adding some flat washers along with the lock washers , it gives the lock washer a little better surface to rest on I believe instead of the bigger holes on the Jack. The insulation on the wire was scuffed through to the copper in one little spot, not really a big deal just put some good super 33 electrical tape on it , and they could put a connector on the wire to hook to the battery . Overall very nice ,would absolutely purchase again. etrailer always has quality choices .

by:

I bought the Bulldog Powered trailer jack from etrailer because they not only have the best price, but amazing service, and shipping was rocket fast!! It took only three days to rural Colorado.

I watched etrailers video of the jack being installed that showed details and dimensions so i could be sure it would fit my application. The videos are well made and super helpful to ensure I got the right jack for my trailer.

Installation was a breeze, three bolts and one wire hookup and you're finished.
The jack works great and the lights are handy. I will say that it is not particularly fast, it is geared low and goes up and down slowly, but it works great and does exactly what it is supposed to do.

by:

This tongue jack works great. The trailer I put it on is a toy hauler and it has a very high empty tongue weight. I replaced the original jack that failed with a heavier duty one. Installation was easy, I secured the trailer, manually raised the old jack, unscrewed and removed the old jack, installed and screwed in the new jack, hooked up the electrics and I was done. Can't ask for more then that.

by:

It arrived quickly, was easy to install, fit right where the old jack was. The cover fit correctly. It worked just like it was supposed to. It is installed on a 10k gvw cargo/camper hybrid and jacks it no problem.

by:

Really easy to install, works fantastic. Single wire to the battery terminal and it is done!

Still working great!!

by:

Easy installation, power wire could be longer.

I installed the jack this morning. Very fast delivery from etrailer. Seems to work well testing it on the lot.

Suggested improvements. 1) I had to mount the jack sideways because of limited clearance so that is a good feature. But the jack had to face toward the right (looking from the front). This meant the spring loaded pull handle was under the trailer and took too much force for me to operate easily so I went with the standard pin. The mounting holes on the jack could be reconfigured so the jack faces left and the pull handle is forward in a sideways mount. 2) The power cord was barely long enough. It should be a foot longer. 3) The mount for the level has three holes and screws. It should have 4 so you can choose front/back or side/side leveling no matter how the jack is mounted.

The jack has performed well. Had to replace the level which Bulldog provided under warranty. I would recommend the jack.

by:

Instructions, installation, and operation were flawless. My only issue was the packaging during shipment. It was shipped in its original box from the mfg. Unfortunately, the box was damaged in multiple locations and all the parts were loose inside. Nothing was lost and everything worked okay. It was unnerving receiving an item like that and wondering if it's as damaged as the box. could have done better on the shipping container.

by:

Seems like excellent product but was packaged upside down so the level on top of the jack was broke. I called right away and they were more than happy to send me a New level for the jack. Installation was super easy only took about 10 minutes for the jack and when the new level gets here that will be very easy also. Over all great service by everyone I talked to at etrailer.

  • Bulldog BD500199 Jack Extends But Won't Always Retract
According to Bulldog, what you are experiencing is most likely a ground issue, believe it or not. They suggest a couple of options to confirm this. 1) If power is getting to the jack, but it's not retracting, it's either a bad motor, a bad switch or a poor ground connection. The ground is the easiest to confirm, so start there. You can test this by turning on the lamp and extending/retracting the jack. If the lamp goes out while trying to operate the jack, it's a ground problem. Remove...

  • Can The Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack # BD500199 be Installed in a 90 Degree Orientation
There is no reason why you could not turn the jack at a 90 degree angle to gain more clearance. Due to the configuration of the holes in the mounting flange, you might need to drill new holes in your trailer tongue to mount the jack in that configuration. The motor housing cannot be repositioned on the shaft. Bulldog tells me that the edge of the motor housing is 1 inch away from the side of the jack tube, as shown in the photo I edited for you.
