How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

The bull dog electric tongue jack is awesome. I got it in white to match my trailer. I unbolted the old jack and bolted on the new one in about 5 minutes. (I had my coreless impact gun.) Total install time was about an hour mainly because I wired the jack to my battery inside the trailer that runs the electronic winch and I had to run a separate ground from the battery to one of the mounting bolts for the jack with a cut off switch. So far it works great but time will tell. I'll be using it a lot more next year.

After 1 year the jack is working awesome

by:

Excellent customer service and followthru by etrailer. Jack is well built and easy to install and use. Would definitely add a flat washer under the bolts to prevent the lock washers from getting drawn into the oblong bolt holes when torquing them done.

by:

Easy installation, works well for my 7000# trailer. The LED light is a nice touch. Rasies it easily. Super helpful customer service and fast shipping as always. What more could I want? Thanks Kathryn & etrailer!

by:

Great jack. Just what I needed to allow my tailgate to open while hooked up to my travel trailer

by:

A powered trailer jack is in my opinion, one of the smartest thingsthat can add to a trailer. After one year of use the Bulldog has been trouble free. I would recommend it highly.

by:

Works great, easy install

by:

The Bull Dog electric trailer jack was delivered in 2 days. It took about 30 minutes to install and works great. I look forward to the next trime I use the tariler.

If I dont keep it covered, rain causes the light to barely glow even when turned off. To protect battery charged, I cover the unit or disconnect the positive lead from the battery. Other than that, it is a labor and time saver. I have recommended it to other people.

by:

Smooth and quiet! Simple install. Replaced a 6 yr old Atwood 2500lb jack that still works but not making good sounds. Time will tell how the Bulldog holds up. Thank you etrailer for the purchase and shipping, well done!

Perfect!

It was time to replace our old, failing, struggling, fuse blowing Jack after a weekend of hand cranking it. I picked this product because the company is local just a couple miles from the house and comes with a 5 year warranty’, if I ever have any problems with it. A real no brainer. Works like a charm! thanks e-trailer for great delivery and price.

Still running strong No issues

by:

One year later and still going strong. I keep the jack covered most of the time, but still looks like new and has never had an issue, ever. I should have bought this years ago and it's a wonder why some RV manufacturers don't include this out of the factory! Thanks etrailer for a great deal!

Electric jack seems to still be working well - it does seem to draw quite a bit of juice though, even on two new fully charged deep cycle batteries I notice my converter needs to work a bit to recharge while boondocking.

by:

Just as described. Easy install, big improvement, good communications and fast shipping. A+

by:

I replaced the unit which came on my new Winnebago trailer because it projected too far toward my tow vehicle and the lift gate wouldn't clear. Fit the mounting holes and works smoothly and because of the compact power head, my liftgate clears by almost two inches.

by:

Arrived quickly, box was a little smashed but unit was ok. Installed same day as delivery and I added an in-line covered fuse. Works great and pretty quiet in both directions. This fit between the A-Frame and my "Jake It" bike rack with 3 inches of clearance. Only problem with the bike rack installed is that you can't access the manual lug ( not enough clearance between the bike rack and tongue jack). And if the Bulldog power jack goes on the blink or the batteries die, I can't imagine how I will lift the trailer on to the ball. But that is another story. If you don't have a bike rack then no worries. This power jack is very sleek and the build quality is top notch. I love the light up front, its very bright. Thanks etrailer.

by:

I received my electric jack from UPS in a box that was barely still together. Fortunately, the jack was not damaged. I took three bolts out to remove the old jack, dropped the new jack through the hole where the old jack was, replaced the three bolts in the new jack, bolting it to the trailer frame and the new jack was installed. This was one of the easiest installations of a piece of equipment that I have ever installed. It all fit perfectly. All I have left to do is hook one wire up and I am finished. Initially, I used the auxiliary manual crank to raise my trailer and it was very easy to crank. Great product.

by:

The Bulldog was purchased as a gift for my son, so it has not yet been mounted to his trailer. With that said, this power jack looks to be built solid and I see no reason why it wouldn't do what it is supposed to do.

by:

This was a great purchase! I use it with my MAXD car hauler. It is SO much easier to use this after a long track-day when your arms are like jello and your hands wore-out from the death-grip. What a great product, and the outside illumination helps a ton with the backup camera when hitching up in the dark! Very well built and sturdy. It took less than 45 minutes to install and wire into the power from the vehicle over the harness.

by:

Very pleased. Arrived here in California in the estimated time. Product was self-installed, very close fit, minor adjustment on our existing propane tanks. We did upgrade hardware (bolts and nuts to grade 8), a standard procedure for us. So far works great, very quiet, love the 5 year warranty on this product. Time will tell how well it lasts, this lift was a 1000 lb. up-sizing for our travel trailer.

by:

Easy to install and hook-up. Sure saves the hand cranking. Suggest this to replace your Hand Crank trailer jack.

by:

Received order on date as promised. Box was a little beat up but product was fine. took off old hand crank jack and installed new Bulldog power jack. It was a cinch to install and took no time at all. The jack sounds powerful and moves at a snails pace but works very well as is intended. I would highly recommend this to anyone who still has a manual crank. Another fine product from etrailer , thanks for the excellent service.

by:

A little hard to install as the mounting brackets were not the same. After two days of cutting and fitting all worked fine...Nice jack!

by:

Install was a breeze! Well built and great price! It has a perfect speed for extending and retracting. I have tall propane tanks so if I have to use the manual crank they get in the way but it will still work, just slow going. I’m a welder so I extended my crank so it’s above the tanks. I would buy this jack again in a heartbeat!

by:

It's been a year since I purchased the jack fast dilivery easy install works like a charm can lift trailer and truck to install torsion bars with ease

by:

installed no trouble to be safe I installed a inline fuse and a tago switch so no passer by can run my battery ,and it added a little more wire to the to short wire installed to the motor

by:

Worked good for about 7 months. Then just quit working. I use the jack everyday running a bread route.
