How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Excellent Jack. Slow moving but that is due to high torque. Well made, attractive design. Highly recommended!
Solved the problem of busting my knuckles on the propane tanks while cranking the old jack.

Great...no problems.

Great jack. Just what I needed to allow my tailgate to open while hooked up to my travel trailer

by:

I received my new Bulldog jack fast after placing my order. It took me about 20 minutes to remove my old one and install the new one. This Bulldog jack is quieter than the previous one and moved up and down real well.
I needed to hook up in the evening before I left for my camping trip and will say the nice led light this jack comes with gives a very nice lighting to be able to see everything needed to hook up my trailer to my truck. I hope this one lasts much longer than my previous one. Time will tell but so far I really like the way this Bulldog jack operates

by:

I just installed this unit. It was so simple and easy to install. It took about 30 min ( minus the 2 hr it took to grind out 20 year old bolts from the manual jack). I love the sleek look of the unit. Gave it a test run and it's so quiet. I have a bumper pull horse trailer with a small living quarters and it lifted and retracted with no issues. Very happy with this product.

by:

The jack has worked well on my 24' enclosed car trailer.
It's a little slow going up which is to be expected with the weight of the car and trailer.

Great, very happy with the purchase.

by:

Fair price. Quick shipping. Arrived as promised.Installation video was very helpful, as were the instructions. Add the drop leg BEFORE bolting the unit in place. Otherwise, you need to raise the tongue to get the leg underneath. Simple install.

by:

Bought this to replace the original jack on our R-Pod 195 that water got the best of. I was able to mount it in the sideways option and now we can drop the tailgate while still hooked up. It's the cat's meow!

by:

High quality, excsllent fit and finish, extension leg is very flexible for setting the length of the leg to accomodate any parking on a pitched parking sopot.

by:

A well built and quiet running product. We had Bulldog unit on our old trailer. My no name factory tongue jack on our new trailer lasted 17 months before the motor died. The BD unit is more expensive but it's built to last.

by:

What a dream come true! This electric jack replaced my old hand crank unit on my 24 foot travel trailer.

Installation was very simple with the one wire hook up. What I like most about this jack is the drop leg. This jack extends so far that now I won't need to bring all my boards (for lifting height) with me just to get the trailer off of the hitch.

Not included was a ring terminal for attaching the wire to the battery, but thats okay because I had one laying around. Another thing that I did, was that I found some flat washers to use between the head of the mounting bolt and the jack. The provided lock washers looked like they'd pull through the mounting plate.

Just be aware that the motor unit on the jack protrudes to the back and front of the center line of the jack tube. I'll have to deal with some clearance issues between the jack motor and my propane tanks. This isn't a flaw with the jack, just a quirk with my particular trailer setup.

Its a very nicely built jack, feels solid and heavy in your hand. Its powerful too. It had no problem picking up the trailer and my 2007 F-150 in order to install my weight distributing bars.

If you need a ring terminal to wire this jack part # BD500187 I recommend part # DW05705-1 for a 3/8 stud size, part 44-5310A for a 3/16 stud size or part 44-5356A for a 5/16 stud size. All of these ring terminals will work with 12-10 Gauge Wire. Deka 10 gauge wire part # 10-1-1 will work well if you need extra wire.

Jack still working great after one year. Hooking up the trailer is so easy. I don’t Miss that old hand crank at all.

great customer service, quick delivery. Lauren A is allways helpful goes out of her way to help.

Working great after a year. It's nice to just push the button to raise the trailer tongue.

My customer loves it. Just what he needed for his equipment trailer.

Still working like a dream ! Very happy..

by:

So far, so good. Hopefully will outlast the terrible SmartJack it replaced.

by:

ordering and free delivery was nice, arrived in good condition, easy to install, justed installed and works well, beats raising and lowering trailer by hand, 26 ft enclosed trailer

by:

Easy install! The wiring is a bit bigger in diameter than I was expecting, so larger heat shrink butt connectors would have been helpful, but we got the job done! Excited to use this instead of hand-cranking the trailer on and off the truck 3-4 times a week!

by:

Great product and easy install! Customer service great with placing order and follow up!

by:

Quality product fit my needs easy ordering decent shipping time

Still working as expected!

Bull dog jacks are the best.

by:

Very happy with the performance of our Bulldog. The name fits. What a difference as compared to a manual jack. Well worth the modest expense, and installation was hardly rocket science. The built in light is a great feature for evening set ups. A minor tip - cover the motor during outside storage to limit the risk of water seepage into the unit. Our experience with etrailer was also very positive.

by:

The Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack - Drop Leg - A-Frame - 14" Lift - 3,500 lbs - Black was very quick and easy to install. Seems to work great. This is on a small 3700 lb travel trailer and lifts with ease. Need to determine how far to ext and retract as not to blow fuses but it works great so far. Can't wait to take it out and see how it performs camping.

Working great with no problems for a year

by:

It's been a year now, and my jack is working just like it did a year ago when I installed it on my 32ft wildwood camper. Still smooth motion up and down. I really enjoy having it. Makes camping so much easier. One of the best purchase decisions I have made! I do have a cover I put on it when I bought it new, so it has never been wet, or exposed to sunlight. I can work the buttons on the jack through the cover, so I never take it off. I do love the jack. Thank you guys so much for good quality at a great great price!

Its been a year and still woring as good as day one. Love it!

by:

Jack arrived in 2 days. Fits great and easy to install. Jack head only sticks out 3 inches from front of tube, closer then most. This allows me to open tailgate without hitting jack. I use an extended reciever for more clearance. Light on jack also shines in the bed of truck.

Works great. No problems. Very nice jack.

by:

The product came well packaged... on the second shipment! The first one was open and not good looking. Stuff happens, and it was corrected very quickly by etrailer reshipping a perfectly new Jack. And it works good and is really strong. Very happy with etrailer service and the Bulldog product.

Shipping was fast and amazing as always. This jack bolted right on to my 2019 175LHS Hideout with the supplied hardware. Wired right up. I am excited about the drop leg. Will be nice to not have to run the jack all day. So far grat stuff. Would highly recommend.

The Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack part # BD500187 has a built-in auto resetting circuit breaker. There isn't a reset procedure for this, since the breaker is thermally operated it will allow power to pass though once the temperature has receded to normal levels. If there is enough strain on the jack to cause the motor to draw more power than it is designed to then the breaker will trip, yes. This could be a result of either overloading the jack or a short.
