Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • Can 2.2K Heavier Rated Leaf Springs be Used on a 2022 Grand Design Imagine BHE Trailer
Hey Steve, thanks for reaching out! According to my research your 2022 Grand Design Imagine BHE has a GVWR just shy of 7,000 lbs so increasing the leaf spring weight rating by 2.2K will result in a pretty noticeable stiffness and I don't recommend going that route. It's okay to have leaf springs that are rated a little higher, but 2.2K is pretty significant for this weight of trailer. If you can let me know what the length of your leaf springs are when they don't have weight on them (lift...

  • Upgrading Leaf Springs, Equalizers, and Wet Bolt Kit for 2018 Jayco 265RLS
Hey Jeff! I can help you find the right parts to upgrade everything but you're going to need to take some measurements. For the leaf springs, you will need to get the spring eye to spring eye measurement or the flat length as outlined in the article I attached further down on this page. You don't want to go too crazy with a higher capacity or you're going to get a rough ride. 4,000 lb leaf springs like the 25-1/4" Long # e57SR or the 26" Long # e22YR would be a good choice if they match...

  • 2,000 lb Rated Leaf Spring Replacement For A Dexter 072-042-00
Hello Mark. Based on what I could find online, the Dexter 072-042-00 is a standard 1-3/4 inch wide double eye spring which is 25-1/4 inches long and rated for 1,750 lbs. To replace these, I recommend you use the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e57SR. This is a 2,000 lb rated 1-3/4" wide double eye spring that measures 25-1/4" long overall. So this will be a direct bolt-on replacement for your Dexter springs and it has the 2,000 lb rating you are looking for.

  • Upgrading Leaf Springs On 2022 Northwood Nash 23D OTG
Hello Brandon, thanks for reaching out. To find the right springs we need to know the weight capacity of each axle, and we need to know the length of the leaf spring. We already know the capacity is 3,500 lbs so all you will need to do it jack up one side of the trailer and measure the leaf spring while not under a load. Leaf spring are measured from center-eye to center-eye. If you want to drop that measurement in the comments below I am happy to look into it and see if we have anything...

  • Replacement Leaf Spring for Wells Cargo T8520T2-D
Hey Rick, he leaf spring part # e22YR that you tried can replace all of the springs you have now without having to change anything so this would work great. As a leaf spring breaks in and eventually wears out it stretches as it gets flatter which is why a shorter new spring is what you end up needing when it's time for replacement.

  • Is There A More Robust 26" Long Leaf Spring To Use In Place Of e22YR?
Hello again, Doug. The # e22YR spring is for a 4,000 lb axle, so technically this is already more robust than what would typically be used with your axle. If you want to bump up the capacity even farther, we do have the # e27SR spring which is 26" long and is for a 4,500 lb axle. Should be a bit more durable than what you have now, and it will fit into your suspension. Your spring breaking like that is a bit worrisome. Usually when we see this happen repeatedly it is because the springs...

  • Does etrailer Carry 24" Eye to Eye Leaf Springs
Seth, with that length there aren't going to be any options that we have unfortunately. The closest springs we carry to your 24" are all slipper springs like the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Radius End for 2,000-lb Trailer Axles # e69SR.

  • Can Slipper Springs be Used to Replace Double Eye Trailer Leaf Springs
Hey Allen, good to hear from you! You can swap to the 30" Slipper Spring # e89SR, but it will require you to get a whole new hanger kit installed on your trailer which means cutting the old ones off and having new ones welded on by a professional. A much better option to beef up your suspension would be to install the 4K Double Eye Leaf Spring # e22YR because you'll continue to use the rest of your current components.

  • What Leaf Springs Do I Need For 1998 Roadrunner Trailer?
Hello Abel, thanks for reaching out. So leaf springs can flatten out and flex up to 1" longer than the original measurement. I do not think your springs were originally 25-1/4". It is more likely they were around 26" originally. Replacing a 3-leaf spring with a 4-leaf will lift the trailer a tiny bit higher, but you are talking about only 3/8" or the thickness of one leaf. As far as recommending a spring, I will need to know the weight capacity of your axle. For example, the 4-Leaf...

  • Can A 25-1/4" Leaf Spring Be Replaced With A 26" Leaf Spring?
Hello Mark, thanks for reaching out. When replacing leaf springs, it is important the new springs are identical in length to the old ones. There is a small amount of tolerance, like 1/2" or less, but any more than this can throw the suspension off center like you are describing. It sounds like the 2" springs are just too long for your trailer and will need to be replaced. I see that you ordered the # e22YR springs which are for a 4,000 lb axle. We do offer a 25-1/4" spring for a 4,000...

  • Can 4k Axle Trailer Leaf Springs be Installed on 2019 Jayco Jayflight 267BHSW
Hey James, you can go with a 4k axle leaf spring like the part # e22YR in place of what you have now while it has a slightly higher weight capacity it's not enough that it would create a harsh ride quality. • Replacement Leaf Springs for 2022 Sun Lite 16BH With Dexter Axle
Hi Jason; do you know the capacity of your Dexter axle? More arch for height isn't really a thing, and I wouldn't get longer shackles since that would throw off suspension geometry and be uneven since the front hanger stays the same. It is acceptable to move to a higher capacity spring so that is the best option here. If you have a 3,500 lb axle (based on specs you probably do) the # e22YR you looked at would last longer with a capacity of 4,000 lbs. This also isn't such a large increase...

The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles # e22YR looks to be exactly what you need. This measures 26" from center eye to center eye and is 1-3/4" wide. This is rated for 2,000 lbs so when you replace both springs together they are rated for 4,000 lbs (check to make sure this is rated high enough for your axle specs). Be sure to replace the leaf spring on both sides of the same axle to ensure that you have a consistent ride quality.

Regardless, the best replacement for an EQ310 like yours is the MORryde ALLTREK 4000 # MR89DR. That particular equalizer isn't as common and has that extra height to it. Hey John, You definitely weren't lying about those springs being flattened out. With them being flattened out they are going to be a bit wider so you will need a shorter eye-to-eye measurement than 26-1/4". My only concern is that the # e54SR at 25-1/8" is going to be a bit too short and have your shackle straps sit out too far, which will eventually lead to a bind up.
