Replacement Leaf Springs For A Tandem Axle Trailer With Flattened Leaf Springs

Question:

e54SR etrailer Double Eye Trailer Leaf Spring - 4 Leaf - 1,750-lb Capacity Compares to SP-212275 Item # e54SR I have a 3500lb axle on my twin axle travel trailer and looking to keep a backup on hand. The way the trailer is currently sitting the 4 leaf springs are pretty flat and measure 26 1/4 center to center on the shackle bolt holes. Would this best suit my needs? The other tape measure length is from center of bolt to center of bolt.

Hey John,

You definitely weren't lying about those springs being flattened out. With them being flattened out they are going to be a bit wider so you will need a shorter eye-to-eye measurement than 26-1/4". My only concern is that the # e54SR at 25-1/8" is going to be a bit too short and have your shackle straps sit out too far, which will eventually lead to a bind up.

If this was a trailer we had in the shop I'd pull a few sizes and see what worked the best. Since we don't have that luxury I recommend going with either the 3-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long # e57SR or 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e22YR. Neither are probably the same length as the original springs but would be closer than the 25-1/8" # e54SR. They are also designed for 4k axles instead of your 3,500lb axle but a bit of extra capacity is probably a good idea for your trailer since it's getting overloaded enough to flatten the leaf springs. Something a bit closer to 25-1/2" to 25-3/4" would be the most ideal option but we unfortunately don't offer anything with this length that fit your axle capacity.

The important thing here is to keep those shackle straps forming a 'W' with the equalizer so that the suspension can travel.

Thank you Kevin, I’m taking the trailer out this weekend, so when it is parked on a level surface, I will try and give you a better measurement. Thanks again for your detailed response. I’ll try and have some more numbers for you next week.
