Video Transcript for What to Know About the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut for Double-Eye Springs

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the three inch long, 9/16 diameter Zinc Shackle Bolt with the locknut for your trailer leaf springs. Now, this 9/16 diameter shackle bolt is used to mount your leaf spring to your trailer's front or rear suspension hanger, and this part will include the locknut that secures the bolt to the hanger. Both these parts are a corrosion resistant zinc finish. This is for a quantity of one bolt and one locknut. Now, few dimensions, we'll start with the bolt itself, we mentioned the diameter on this, it's gonna be right at 9/16 of an inch.

The bolt head size or the socket size you would use on this, it's gonna be 13/16 of an inch. Now, the length under the bolt head to the very end of the bolt is gonna be right at three inches, the usable length, which would be from under the bolt head to where the thread starts, is 2 3/8 inches, and just the thread length is about 5/8 of an inch. Now, the thread size on this is 9/16 by 18 threads per inch, and the lock nut, which will install right on here, when you go to install it, that's gonna have a diameter or head size of 7/8 of an inch. But that should do it for the review on this three inch long, 9/16 diameter Zinc Shackle Bolt with the locknut for your trailer leaf springs.

Excellant and fast delivery

by:

fast, prompt delevery. Items received were exactly as described.

by:

Great fit. Pay attention to crimp marks on nut, as this seems to act as the locking feature. Hopefully the small extra expense for zinc coating with a little paint holds up.

The rebuild is looking awesome, Jerry. What is your go to spot for fishing weekends?

Worked perfect for my application.

Worked great for installing leaf spring s.

Direct replacement, good quality

by:

Ideally, the shoulder of the bolts should be long enough to extend all the way through the spring and shackle so that the threads are not subject to load or moving parts. The treads are the weakest portion of any bolt and should only be exposed to tension, not sheer loads. This being trailer hardware, I guess that design factor is not a high priority. Just seems like it could be done right with just a smidge more effort or consideration. That said, the original bolts I removed had only a slightly longer shoulder and one-half the shackle was riding on threads and it held up for years, although it was worn considerably more in the threads.

by:

Good price and they fit perfectly.

I am okay with these, but I do wish I could find rust resistant spring bolts.

I don't write many reviews--usually only when something is really bad or really good. I have been rebuilding a trailer and this is only my second order from etrailer.com. Their service is unmatched by any company I have dealt with in a long time. I will continue to do business with them.

by:

Wth rusted out leaf springs on my trailer but with zero experience replacing them, I contacted etrailer and Shawn was very helpful in selecting the right parts and taking me through the process. She was patient in terms of helping me take the right measurements and suggesting the bolts and pieces I needed to do the job right.

Everything came well packaged and complete two days later. An hour after that the springs were in my trailer and now has a boat sitting on it.

Thanks!

I am completely satisfied with service and the product that I purchased from etrailer.com. The measurements and specifications on the web site were complete and accurate. Shipping was prompt and the parts were packed more carefully than anything that I have purchased online. Installation of my replacement leaf springs went seamlessly which I really appreciated as I had to leave my broken trailer at my hunt camp and had limited tools to do the repair.

I can't recommend etrailer.com highly enough. They are now my first choice in trailer parts.

by:

I never saw locknuts like the ones that came with the bolts. They are only slightly dented on the exterior/last thread of the nut. Looks home made..lol . Bottom line if the bolt is just big enough to fit the lock nut most likely will not fair well. I punched the bolt threads as a assurance.

  • Installation Bolts for Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers
You will need at least 10 bolts for the Equa-Flex Cushioned Equalizers # LC279687, and those bolts are the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut for Double-Eye Springs # TRFA73Z916DLNZ. The reason I say "at least" 10 is because you would need additional bolts if you wanted to replace the bolts that attach your leaf springs to your hangers. What I recommend is getting all of the necessary bolts, shackle straps and nuts with one kit that is designed to work with the Equa-Flex, the Lippert Components...

  • What Is The Purpose Of Steel band On Leaf Springs
The leaf springs are normally installed with the band forward of the axle, but it is not something that has to be done that way. The steel band is called the rebound clip. Their main purpose is to help keep the main leaf from breaking on a rebound. When the weight of a vehicle or trailer is on the spring, all of the leaves work together to support the spring above them. If the wheel drops for any reason the total weight of the axle falls on the main leaf if there are no rebound clips....

  • Will Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit Help With Up and Down Movement Of Trailer
It sounds like you have a lot of up and down movement in your travel trailer while going down the road. The Road Armor Shock Absorbing Kit part # LC696740 is a better option then the MORyde kit to help eliminate some of that movement because it provides about 3" more of suspension travel capability for a smoother ride. The cushioned Road Armor system will absorb the road shock to help eliminate the up and down movement you are experiencing. I have attached the dimensions of the equalizers...

  • How Much Longer Can a Leaf Spring Be And Work Safely on a Tandem Axle RV Trailer?
A leaf spring being 1-1/2" longer is going to be to much of a difference to work properly for the trailer suspension. While it may bolt up the positioning of the axles will change by quite a bit and may bind up as the suspension travels through its range of movement. Typically I do not like to see more than 1/2" difference in the length of the leaf springs when you replace them if you are unable to find the same size. If you can let me know what length springs you have and how you are measuring...

If you can tell what shape and size axle you have I can help you find the U-Bolt Kit you need. • Is Road Armor Equalizer Upgrade Better Than MORryde
You will definitely want to go with the Road Armor Shock Absorbing Equalizer Kit # LC696740 over the MORryde as the Road Armor has more travel and will provide a smoother ride. Then, in regards to shackle straps I'm not sure what you mean by which would be more affected. You will want to go with shackle traps that are the same size if your current equalizer is the same dimensions as the Road Armor. As far as the leaf springs are concerned, they only need to be replaced if they are damaged...

  • Determining Correct Replacement Leaf Spring For Trailer W/ 3000lb Axles and 27" Long Springs
The # SP-210275 you were looking at is for a 3500lb axle and is 27" long measured from center of spring eye to center of spring eye. This is the correct spring for your trailer based on the measurements you provided. The next shortest spring would be 2" shorter which would be much too short. For replacement equalizers we have the # TREQR89 which is 8" long and has a center hole of 9/16", or the # TREQR83 which is 9" long and has a 3/4" center hole. For replacement hardware you can use...

It does look like you have shackle straps that are to long and possibly worn out bushings. You can replace your shackles with the 2-1/4" Shackle # LC122487. You will need 8 of these for the entire trailer. I would recommend pulling a couple of the Shackle Bolts # TRFA73Z916DLNZ to determine if they or the Nylon Bushings # TRBU11566 are worn and causing extra clearance which may explain if this is something that just started happening recently. • Will Adding the Lippert Road Armor Raise My Trailer to an Unsafe Height
We've seen a lot of our neighbors raise their trailer considerably more than 1/2" without adversely affecting handling on their trailers; many of them use spacer blocks or axle flip kits to gain as much as 4 to 4-1/2" of additional clearance. As long as your trailer tows level with your truck, I don't believe that extra 1/2" of height will have the negative effects you might expect. • Troubleshooting Trailer Suspension Bolts Splines that Aren't Seating
Have you tried tapping the bolt in with a hammer? Hopefully not much force would be needed. Ideally you get the splines seated all the way but then you don't have to really torque the nuts down as the bolt needs to allow the suspension to move. You might open up the holes a bit more to allow the splines to fit through if they are being stubborn.

Hey Corey, Bolt grades for leaf spring suspensions can range from grade 5 to grade 8, with the consensus being that grade 8 is the most preferred. For a 3,500lb axle the Zinc Shackle Bolt with Locknut # TRFA73Z916DLNZ would be a compatible replacement. When removing the old bolt and installing the new bolt I recommend using a second wrench to make sure the head of the bolt doesn't spin as these have splines to help grip the bolt hole.

Having a 1 inch difference in the length of the shackle straps would be a pretty drastic change to the amount of articulation you get out of your suspension, so going with that kit wouldn't be advisable. We don't have a kit that uses longer heavy duty shackles, so you'd need to assemble the parts separately. • You'd need two of part # K71-358-00 • Two # TREQ104 equalizers • Two of # TRFA73Z916DLNZ shoulder bolts with nuts This will provide you the same kit, but with longer shackle straps....

  • Will Putting Axle In Backwards Cause Trailer Brakes To Not Function?
The reason your brakes are no longer functioning, is that they are actually directional with the front and rear pads being different. Since the axle is backwards meaning the brakes are backwards the brakes will not function. To fix this you will need to remove the axle and turn it around. As long as the shackle bolts are not rusted, you will have no issues reusing them. If they have any damage though I would go ahead and replace them for peace of mind. • Gaps Between Shackle Bolt Heads and Shackles on Double-Eye Trailer Suspension
For a 9/16 inch shackle bolt such as # TRFA73Z916DLNZ you will want 65 to 95 foot pounds of torque. Provided that you are within that range you won't over-torque the nuts. A little bit of play is expected but large gaps could be taken up using washers. The spring eye does need to be able to move though so it can't be sandwiched between the shackles too tightly.
