An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

I normally don't have this problem with you folks but when I looked at the box it looked like it was open and then wrapped up with packing tape, pretty beat up. I am missing all the nuts and bolts that go with this and only received one of the spacers. Is there any way someone can send me my missing nuts and bolts? I am not terribly upset about the missing spacer as luckilly I picked up both the 1 and 1/2 inch spacers separately and those did include the bolts to screw into the bracket.

The box was definitely in poor condition. Customer Service will be in touch to have the missing hardware sent out.

I just installed the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System on my 2019 Ford F-150 4x4. The install was pretty straight forward, but I will say that the written instructions were pretty vague. Reviewing the Video on the e-trailer site was helpful. Also the markings for Left and Right could be improved. The marking “L” was very small and baring readable and the “R” appeared to be under some scratch marks so it was not legible at all. I think this product will help considerably. I have attached photos. The clearance between the rubber spring and the bottom plate is approx 1”. I also previously installed the Equalizer weight distribution & 4 way anti sway system to tow my 30’ Travel Trailer. The Timbren is to prevent any slight squat may occur.

Ford F-150

A year after installing these and many miles old towing I heartily recommend them. F150 is totally level while towing a 7000 lb fifth wheel. Great economical solution to sag!

by:

The Timbrens made a big difference. In fact, when I gave them to my mechanic to install, he said "Good choice. I have installed a lot of them on customer's vehicles and on my own."

Great investment. Could tell right away in improved ride quality while towing my RV.

U-bolts need to be heavier on the mounting pads. Snapped them off useing a small 3/8 Rachet. The break happened at the end of weld where there was undercut of weld puddle . Other than that very nice product…

It is very unusual for the u bolts to snap off and I have a few questions for you. Would you be able to send a picture of where it happened? Have you already reached out to Timbren or replaced the u bolts?

by:

First, this is the third truck have have put Timbren SES on, so I am a big fan of this option for a pickup truck. There is no impact to the ride when the bed is empty, when loaded it is a big improvement keeping the truck is a level position, reduced sway.. I would have given this 5 stars, except the lower bracket is rusting. All the other parts are painted black except this one part - see picture... This is after one year, truck is parked in a garage in NC (not a high snow/salt state)...

I continue to be a fan, on my 1019 f150, I used the 1 in spacer, works perfect ! I have dumped 2200 lbs of stone in the bed a few times, no problem.

2016 Ford F-150

I just completed installation of my Timbren Rear Suspension for my 2016 Ford F150. In 2012 I purchased this same product from etrailer for my Ford F150, which I upgraded to the 2016. I have a 5th wheel and the Timbren product allows my vehicle to be perfectly level in all situations. A great product!!!

After 1 year heavy use, I still strongly recommend the Timbren shock as the perfect solution for a level towing, hauling ride.

by:

Overall, probably a bit more than 4 stars. My only issue is the same complaint that a lot of the reviewers have stayed: when they finally are engaged it's like going from a nice riding half ton truck to a WW II era tank across a battlefield. I'm not sure why the company decided to design these to carry 3500 lbs each for use on a half ton platform ... 1500-2000 would have been plenty - and still well over the rated capacity for said platform - and most likely provide a much softer ridi g experience when loaded.
Having said that, they were quite easy to install and seem very well made. And of course, they do the job of supporting extra load well

by:
2016 Ford F-150

I have a 2016 Ford F150 Regular Cab with 6.5 foot box and 5.0 engine, 6400 lb payload package, 9.75" ring gear with 3.73 gears with a locker. (Hard to find!) Ease of installation is easy, with even minor mechanical skills. I took my time and it was 40 minutes to install both sides. Took some measurement of the factory bump stop distances to the axle - 6.5 inch's approximately. (Would take a lot of weight to compress it that far!! Have hauled some rocks before, almost 1 ton and it was still 3 inchs from touching the axle!)
After installing I took some measurement of the gap between the plates and the rubber that will come into contact with when the suspension compress's. Left side (Driver) was 1.25 inch. (Full gas tank.) Right side (Passenger) 1.50 inch. Have not driven it yet to see how the suspension will ride before these Timbren Rubbers will come into play.
Purchased these to help when I haul a 700 Yamaha Grizzley ATV (750 lbs approx.) and tow a camp trailer with a 550 lb tongue wt. approx. Separately the truck would be level, but with both it was squatting it to much. I am hoping this helps in that situation & to help stabilize the ride.
Gave a 3 for easy of installtion, but yet to be determined how well it will help when towing & or hauling ATV or both, and how the ride will be empty.

I spoke with my Timbren representative, who tells me that its likely the full tank of gas is causing the 14 inch space differential between the driver/passenger Aeon spring and the axle. They do have spacers available that are as small as a half inch, but all that would do in your case is make the other side 1/4 inch closer to the axle. Any load thats capable of compressing the suspension so the springs contact the axle would cause both springs to contact at the same time, so that small differential wouldnt be anything to be concerned about. Let us know if youre interested in the spacer, Timbren will send you one if youre interested.

by:
2016 Ford F-150

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case.
Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift.

Still holding up great. Have a friend that went with airbags , and is constantly battling leaks

by:
2017 Ford F-150

Easy install. Was able to get it installed without lifting truck. Just put axle plate on before installing spring. F150 now has a half inch drop at rear and half inch rise at front. Prior was nearly 4 inch drop at rear with trailer loaded with tractor.

by:

Thus far I AM EXCEPTIONALLY PLEASED WITH THE SUSPENSION LIFT FOR TOWING, AND SHORT TIRN-AROUND TIME FOR ORDERING.

by:
2021 Ford F-150

The product worked as advertised. If you get these, do EXACTLY as the installation videos show how to install them. I thought otherwise and "did it my way" and for my punishment, I had to hoist the truck up again to remove the spacers. The ride was too harsh with no load and the spacers installed. Removing the spacers got rid of the harshness. When the load is applied, the suspension enhancement kicks in as I expected.

These do exactly what I hoped they would do.

Love them, I put about 2000 lbs in truck bed, now no more squat, also towing camper helps with sway and leveling it out. Highly recommend!

Still works great!

by:

I have a 2016 F150 XLT. Max towing package. Front end has spacer to level the truck. Then when i tow it squats really bad. With the weight distribution hitch it still squats. I installed this product and you can see in the picture before and after. With no distribution hitch it’s barely squatting. Fantastic product. Nice thing it allows suspension to flex independently still unlike air bag kits.

by:
2017 Ford F-150

This does exactly what you hope it will. I am not a master mechanic, but the install was done by myself after removing the tires. It picked up 3 inches from the level that was used previously.

Product arrived within a business week. Took a couple days for me to get around to installing it on my Ford 150 Lariat 4x4. Not bad to install, I had to do it laying on my back in my garage. Finally hooked up my 4th wheel to my Andersen hitch today. Truck was level, 5th wheel was level, and I was happy. Ready to rock 'n' roll.

by:
Ford F-150

This system works well on my f150. It doesn’t affect the ride when I have no load but gives me more carrying capacity when I load something on truck bed or with a trailer.

by:

My order arrived quickly and accurately. I was skeptical about the "easy installation", as I've heard that before! But, it really was. I was able to install the springs with my truck sitting in my garage with no jack. Very easy. Also, they really do what they're supposed to do under load, while having no affect on the empty ride quality.
Happy with them!

2016 Ford F-150

Night and day difference while towing. This is one of the best additions to my truck. My camper is around 7k pounds. My back end doesn't sag as much and doesn't bounce as ki when towing. Not noticeable when unloaded. I recommend this to everyone e who tows.

  • How To Reduce Rear Sag With Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System and 2019 Ford F-150
The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System 2019 Ford F-150 part # TFR1504E will help to reduce the rear sag on the Ford F-150. However, I do recommend to take a look at the weight distribution setup first to make sure the system is not under-adjusted. If there is not enough weight being transferred to the front axle then rear may sag. You may need to add spacer washers or raise the L-brackets. I recommend to take a look at the "weight distribution adjustment" section of the installation...

They also compensate for off-center loads while hauling. The springs come with all hardware required for an easy installation. These Timbrens will fit both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive models.
