An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

A year after installing these and many miles old towing I heartily recommend them. F150 is totally level while towing a 7000 lb fifth wheel. Great economical solution to sag!

Not so well! I traded my 2016 F150 for a 2021 model and when changing the Timbren over to the new truck one of the bolts on the platform the attached to the axel was so rusted on that even after several applications of penetrating oil twisted off. When I contacted Timbren about ordering a replacement I was told that they do not sell any parts. I was willing to pay for two new platforms but they said I would have to order a new full set. Very poor customer service in my opinion! Great product, lousy service I have to say.

Super simple to install. My 2018 f150xl would almost hit the bump stops when I hooked up my 7x16 enclosed trailer. Now, it almost rides level. Much safer feeling ride also. Without the trailer, it rides like an unloaded dump truck. It is what it is. I'm happy with them.

Received the Timbren SES kit in today's mail around 11:30AM, already installed on my 2024 F-150 pickup's rear differential before 3:00PM same day. Like always etrailer's fast delivery time and product info with installation video on your website are very helpful. 1st photo OEM bump-stop, 2nd photo OEM bump-stop removed, 3rd & 4th photo Timbren SES kit installed.

Installed Timbren jounce springs on a 2015 F150. I have towed several trailers with these, at various loads, and hauled items in the bed too (not always the same trip). I am pleased with the performance and stability improvement over stock springs and snubbers. Installation was simple and the instructions clear (etrailer did a good job with the video too). This is the second truck I have installed them on, as they did well on my previous truck.

I have a 2023 Ford F-150 XL. It is the 2.7L engine, but has decent towing capability and payload capacity. My payload is 1900 lb. I bought a new camper with a tongue weight of approximately 800lb once the camper was loaded.

My truck did too much bouncing when pulling the camper, despite ensuring my weight distribution hitch was adjusted correctly. I knew I needed something to help. I found this Timbren set and figured they might help. Wow! They helped greatly! The camper was more stable, with nearly all bounce eliminated. They improved my tow experience from 'sketchy' to 'confident.' You won't be sorry you bought them. Anyone hauling a decent sized load/camper should upgrade to these. Install was super easy.

These work great for giving you a solid towing experience when loaded heavy; however, when driving empty you definitely get the jounce bumper “into the air” experience when driving on moderate to rough roads. I have the recommended gap installed between the axle and the timbrens, but with terrible midwest roads and highways it doesn’t seem to be enough gap. Smooth roads it rides great. It’s driving 80mph on the expressway and hitting potholes or large cracks where these will hit causing uncomfortable harsh ride.

I’ve resorted to installing and then subsequently removing these anytime I use my travel trailer for longer trips (30minute removal time). I tow a 7000lb loaded travel trailer with an f150 and just needed something to make the soft half ton suspension from porpoising too much on bad-roads. Mission accomplished when towing as I said these things work great for heavy loads. It almost rides better with heavy loads…. I was going to give airbags a try but the reviews from others have scared me from those because even with airbags at the lowest setting you still get the jouncing on bumpy roads.

To be honest the ride quality is something that we hear about with Timbren springs. I do know that one way to combat it is to remove it like you do when not in use. Another suggestion would be to look at a different system like part # SS95QR from Super Springs. It is made of a softer material and is rated at 3000 pounds. Or you can look at an air bag kit like part # F2582 which has a 4800 lb capacity. When installed it will be in constant contact with the upper frame and lower axle to give a smoother ride. A couple of caveats with it are that is is not compatible with in-bed hitch; product mounts in same location as hitch brackets. Also, that the distance from the outside of the frame to the inside of the tire must be at least 8 inches. You would need to add a compressor to have a constant way to add air or you can do it manually.

They do exactly what I wanted them to do. They support my boat trailer and when not towing, they don’t touch the bumpers everything’s great.

I just installed the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System on my 2019 Ford F-150 4x4. The install was pretty straight forward, but I will say that the written instructions were pretty vague. Reviewing the Video on the e-trailer site was helpful. Also the markings for Left and Right could be improved. The marking “L” was very small and baring readable and the “R” appeared to be under some scratch marks so it was not legible at all. I think this product will help considerably. I have attached photos. The clearance between the rubber spring and the bottom plate is approx 1”. I also previously installed the Equalizer weight distribution & 4 way anti sway system to tow my 30’ Travel Trailer. The Timbren is to prevent any slight squat may occur.

by:

Have had ot installed for 1 year now and works great! Had issues with my trailer before and now I don't even know it's back there. Would recommend!

by:

I just received my package. Everybody there has been very professional. They have the knowledge of this product. They made sure that I ordered the correct product for me. Once I install this product I will add photos. I checked out a lot of reviews. All had good feedback. I spoke with many mechanics who told me that this should do what I need it to. I’m not a fan of airbags. Had one before wasn’t happy with it at all. Took it off right away. Terrible ride. This product should not affect my ride when I don’t have a load in my truck or hooked up to my travel trailer. More to come.

I just completed installation of my Timbren Rear Suspension for my 2016 Ford F150. In 2012 I purchased this same product from etrailer for my Ford F150, which I upgraded to the 2016. I have a 5th wheel and the Timbren product allows my vehicle to be perfectly level in all situations. A great product!!!

After 1 year heavy use, I still strongly recommend the Timbren shock as the perfect solution for a level towing, hauling ride.

by:

Great product and great support! So glad I went with these over air bags as have a truck camper and they work great with no hassles. Thank you etrailer!

by:
2016 Ford F-150

Solid Product! Yeah it's a stiffer ride when loaded But that's the sacrifice made to have more control of the haul while underway. Definitely recommend to anyone wanting to stay more level with a heavy boat/trailer setup as in my case.
Not that install is hard but removal of spare tire before install, may have helped with space if you don't have a lift.

Still holding up great. Have a friend that went with airbags , and is constantly battling leaks

by:

First, this is the third truck have have put Timbren SES on, so I am a big fan of this option for a pickup truck. There is no impact to the ride when the bed is empty, when loaded it is a big improvement keeping the truck is a level position, reduced sway.. I would have given this 5 stars, except the lower bracket is rusting. All the other parts are painted black except this one part - see picture... This is after one year, truck is parked in a garage in NC (not a high snow/salt state)...

I continue to be a fan, on my 1019 f150, I used the 1 in spacer, works perfect ! I have dumped 2200 lbs of stone in the bed a few times, no problem.

by:

I absolutely love it and have zero issues. Mount it and forget it. I tell all my friends to buy them. Timbren suspension is the best I've used and I've tried almost everything.

by:

Sorry to report that the Timbren package arrived in original box that looked as though it had been ripped open and the carefully taped shut with clear packing tape. I thought at first that shipper had damaged it but all parts were there so I started install. Half way thru I discovered two of the lock nuts were stripped and threads on the right axle pad were burred at the start. We live 14 miles round trip from the closest ace hardware. I used a die to repair the axle pad threads but had to stop for the day to purchase new lock nuts. Feel like I got a used set for new price.

2016 Ford F-150

I have a 2016 Ford F150 Regular Cab with 6.5 foot box and 5.0 engine, 6400 lb payload package, 9.75" ring gear with 3.73 gears with a locker. (Hard to find!) Ease of installation is easy, with even minor mechanical skills. I took my time and it was 40 minutes to install both sides. Took some measurement of the factory bump stop distances to the axle - 6.5 inch's approximately. (Would take a lot of weight to compress it that far!! Have hauled some rocks before, almost 1 ton and it was still 3 inchs from touching the axle!)
After installing I took some measurement of the gap between the plates and the rubber that will come into contact with when the suspension compress's. Left side (Driver) was 1.25 inch. (Full gas tank.) Right side (Passenger) 1.50 inch. Have not driven it yet to see how the suspension will ride before these Timbren Rubbers will come into play.
Purchased these to help when I haul a 700 Yamaha Grizzley ATV (750 lbs approx.) and tow a camp trailer with a 550 lb tongue wt. approx. Separately the truck would be level, but with both it was squatting it to much. I am hoping this helps in that situation & to help stabilize the ride.
Gave a 3 for easy of installtion, but yet to be determined how well it will help when towing & or hauling ATV or both, and how the ride will be empty.

I spoke with my Timbren representative, who tells me that its likely the full tank of gas is causing the 14 inch space differential between the driver/passenger Aeon spring and the axle. They do have spacers available that are as small as a half inch, but all that would do in your case is make the other side 1/4 inch closer to the axle. Any load thats capable of compressing the suspension so the springs contact the axle would cause both springs to contact at the same time, so that small differential wouldnt be anything to be concerned about. Let us know if youre interested in the spacer, Timbren will send you one if youre interested.

by:

Easy install. I would recommend if it’s a F150 to not use the spacer or it will be touching.

by:

Product installed easily and works as advertised. No complaints. My Customer was thrilled to have better trailer control and ride height.

by:

Ordered the Timbren Rear SES while camping and just now installed. Ordered because of someone's positive feedback on the SES. No issues with the installation. Soon I will be hooking up the RV and putting them in use.

Easy to install, have used them on my previous vehicles. I ended up using the spacer for my truck, 2022 F150 w/Max Tow Package. You only feel it if there are large transitions in the road.

They are great. My truck use to squat while hauling my 34, camper. I put these on and it level everything out.I was worried that i was going to snap a leaf spring but this took care of the problem. My truck is a Ford f-150 crewcab.

by:

Had a 2.5" leveling kit installed and wanted the Timbrens to prevent rear suspension sag when towing a 20' ATV trailer. Product works great to keep the truck level when towing and provides a solid ride (no bounce). Easy to install.

by:

I am very happy with these Timbrens! I was contemplating going with the stiffer version but glad I did not as the ones I installed have done exactly what I was hoping for and more. Not only did it help out with offsetting the rear sag when towing my travel trailer it has made the whole truck feel much more stable when towing. The best part is when the truck is not loaded you don’t even know they are there! I would, and have, recommended these to anyone that is looking to do similar as me. Why spend more on an airbag system that you constantly have to adjust is my opinion. And it installs so easily and the best money I have ever spent on suspension enhancement!

  • Will The RoadActive Suspension(RAS) Work With Timbren Jounce Springs on a 2018 Ford F-150?
I do recommend removing your Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504E before you install either the 2,000LB # RAS3611-Y or 3,000LB # RAS3611-YHD RoadActive Suspension. The RAS mounts outside your u-bolts which is where the Timbren spring comes down to contact the axle. While there may be a small gap currently your rear end can float a bit side to side which may cause the jounce springs to contact the mounting arms which could damage both units. I personally feel the RAS is...

The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # TFR1504E is a good option for a 2020 Ford F-150 but the suspension has to reach a threshold before they engage and they do compress when this is done so you will still sag a bit while they are installed. The air bags allows you to adjust the pressure so not only will they engage right away but they also give a smoother ride. I recommend...

For great rear jounce springs for your 2022 Ford F-150, I recommend the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504E. Apart from the 6,000 pound load capacity, the Timbrens becomes more rigid as more weight is added and results in greater stability (with or without loads) and a decrease in sag. They also compensate for off-center loads while hauling. The springs come with all hardware required for an easy installation. These Timbrens will fit both 2-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive models.

As more weight is added, the springs get progressively firmer. Because the springs replace the factory jounce bumpers, the Timbrens won't interfere with the bracketry for your firth wheel hitch. • Recommended Air Spring System for 2017 Ford F-150 with 5th Wheel Hitch Installed
For your 2017 Ford F-150 with Curt fifth-wheel base rails installed, I recommend the Air Lift LoadLIfter 5000 Air Helper Springs # AL57284. This system will mount to the bottom of the truck's frame, so it can be installed along with your existing fifth-wheel brackets without any interference between the two. This will provide your Ford F-150 with up to 5,000 pounds of load-leveling support, reducing strain on the rear suspension while also improving safety and ride quality. The air springs...

  • Are there Specific Torque Values for the Hardware in Timbren Help Spring Kit TFR1504E
I spoke with my contact over at Timbren and he said there isn't a torque value for the hardware when installing kit # TFR1504E. He said to just tighten them until snug using regular hand tools. I know that is very subjective but tight using hand tools is what to shoot for.

  • Timbren Suspension and RAS Compatibility on a 2022 Ford F-150
The Timbren Kit item # TFR1504E you referenced does fit your 2022 Ford F-150 and can be installed with the RAS kit item # RAS3611-Y that you already have installed. It will be a tight fit when you are attaching the bottom bracket to your axle it has to go underneath the bracket that attaches the RAS to the leaf spring pack. I have linked a picture of the Timbren system installed so you can have a better idea of what I am talking about. I...

  • Will Timbrens Work With Weight Distribution Hitch on 2019 Ford F-150
Yes; when using a weight distribution hitch while towing with your 2019 Ford F-150, using the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System # TFR1504E will help with stability. The weight distribution will help with leveling, but the Timbrens are going to offer added stability like you mentioned, so they'll help with body roll as you're towing. Timbrens and weight distribution is a pretty common pairing so you can definitely use the # TFR1504E.
