Will Flexco Pull-Out Steps Work for You?

Pull-out steps are typically installed on travel trailers. The Flexco pull-out steps from Stromberg Carlson are easy to install and fold up underneath the camper for simple storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Mounting Bracket Stromberg

The Lippert pull-out steps attach to the underside of the camper chassis, directly beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available underneath your camper that lines up with the door frame, and measure the width and depth. You will need a mounting space that is at least 27-1/8" wide and 12" deep.

If it turns out you have more or less space beneath your doorway, there are other step assemblies available with bracket sizes ranging from 21-1/16" wide to 28-1/4" wide. A full list of the available steps is below.

Outriggers for RV Steps

Outriggers - metal brackets that act as an extension (LC301704 - sold separately) - may be needed for installation depending on the model of your original stairs. These provide extra length if the old steps are longer or wider than the new.

Once you know where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, that spot will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Entry Height Stromberg

To determine how many steps you'll need, measure from the mounting point to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, plus 3" to 9" to account for the drop from the bottom steps to the ground. This measurement will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays mounting bracket width measurements in the first column and entry height measurements in the second column. The third column shows the corresponding part numbers. Use the mounting bracket width and entry height measurements you took to determine which part number will fit your RV. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

Mounting Bracket Width Entry Height Part Number
21-1/16" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1120
23-5/8" 19" - 22" SMFP-2120
24-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1220
25" 14-1/2" - 17-1/2" SMFP-1100
26" 19" - 22" SMFP-2100
27-1/8" 30" - 33" SMFP-3200L
28-1/8" 26" - 29" SMFP-3100
28-1/8" 34" - 37" SMFP-4400
28-1/4" 10-1/2" - 13-1/2" SMFP-1200

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Make sure the camper is level on flat ground
  2. Lift the steps into the mounting space and prop into place
  3. If needed, mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill

    -Set aside steps before drilling

  4. If needed, install the outriggers
  5. Align step mounting holes and secure in place with carriage bolts and flange lock nuts

-Make sure the bracket is backed up fully against the I-beam on the chassis

    -Hardware not included

  6. Tighten hardware until snug
  7. Make sure assembly is sitting square and level
  8. Torque the hardware tight

These steps are HEAVY DUTY. No flexing, no bending they are bad*ss. I mounted them under my redneck gooseneck/truck camper trailer on one side and my wife loves them. No more using a little folding step ladder to get in and out which always seemed like it wanted to sink in the dirt or fall over.

I need to get another set of these for the other side of my trailer.

Excellent. Working so well and safer then a little step ladder that I will soon get another for the other side of my camper.

Has more flex than I anti payed when stepping on step.

Disappointed as paint on steps is bubbling and flaking in off

by:

After a small mishap etrailer provided the replacement I needed to keep our trip on track.

So far so good!

These steps are
rated 50 pounds heavier, (350 vs 300#) than the competitors steps that came off of my truck. The look and feel of this unit is considerably better. Long term will tell as this is installed on a specialty work truck that gets used hard.

E-Trailer sales associates were helpful and easy to understand on the phone.

We had to replace our steps on our fifth wheel. We bought these from Etrailer. The price was very fair and they were delivered quickly. We removed our old one and installed the new one ourselves. It was a perfect fit and have performed great

by:

These are a nice replacement for the installed steps for the original ones. They are an inch longer between steps but they get closer to the ground. These also include a latch lock that prevents them from accidentally opening when you might have to travel over rough terrain. I had a semi truck that wasn't paying attention to the road and had to swerve around a tractor when we were going camping. When the semi swerved to miss the tractor, it came into my lane and I had to go off the edge of the road to avoid a head on collision. The road was rough and we were bounced really hard. We didn't have an accident but my steps stayed in place, as where my other steps would have been jarred really hard and would have dislodged and unfolded. I pulled over to inspect my trailer to make sure that everything was secure. It was a really bad bounce and was happy to see that everything was intact. If these had been my original steps, they would have been dislodged and would have been hanging out. These new steps are made by the same manufacturer but are of a better design and would recommend them to those who want an upgrade for the original gear that is installed. You can buy these with great confidence and feel secure going down the road with your RV!

First, etrailer did a great job getting these to me. At first the stairs seemed fine, however 7 months later, when taking a turn to a downward slope, the bottom stair popped out and hit the dirt and bent. I turned to the stromberg service department, but instead of acknowledging the problem with their stairs, they proceeded to blame their customer, and offered to sell me a new set and an insulting rate. These may be good stairs, but locked them down beyond their silly mechanism and don't expect support.

I have contacted the manufacturer and they have confirmed that there is a locking mechanism that once the step is closed and the lock bar pushed down the step will not open in travel. If the bar may not have been pushed down, the bar does not automatically lock the step, it must be pushed down to lock the step. A tug on the step after folding up the step will tell if the lock is engaged. You should not have any issues with the steps opening in travel since the lock is a tab that you have to push to engage.

by:

The steps I purchase from you were installed by me and were the correct ones for my camper. I cut a corner to close and smashed the original ones when the wheels dropped in a ditch. I very happy your company had the right replacement for these steps. Great service, delivery and reasonable price.

Thank you very much

by:

Second one went on easier then the first! Looks like they revised the steps a little and added an extra tab to preven the lower two steps from "bouncing" open. I may have to weld a tab on my old one to also have this safety feature.

Another year on my second set of steps and they work as great as the first set. I added this set to the other side of my trailer so we could access the deck from either side depending on how our camping space is setup. Great solid construction that does NOT flex when you walk up and down them. Super sturdy.

by:

Excellent product, received in great shape during shipping. Replaced old steps without any issues.
Thank you for your excellent customer service.

A little over a year since installation steps are doing the job, do have one issue paint and rust, paint peeling off and rust is starting to show. I have done some repair work by treating the rust and spot painting. Manufacturing needs better corrosion control process.

by:

Came in less than a week, easy install, better than original that came with my Winnebago Minnie 2529RG. Make sure to reuse existing bolts. No hardware comes with the stairs. A bit pricy, but so is everything these days!

by:

Unfortunately this will not work on my 5th wheel.
Called Customer Service and advised of issue and they are allowing me to return.
Wish all Customer Service departments were as reactivity and well trained as this one is. WILL USE ETRAILER.COM FOR FUTURE CONSIDERATION ON RV PRODUCTS, AS WE FULL TIME.
Thank you etrailer.com

After trying to find replacement step from SEVERAL dealers with no success I called etrailer.com on a Thursday had the step delivered Tuesday afternoon and after an hour installed it myself. They are top notch and really know their business. Would definitely recommend them for your replacement needs.

by:

Steps bolted right up to my travel trailer. They are not exactly what came on our camper but will work very well. This set of steps has a lock on them to keep them locked in the traveling position

by:

Exact replacement for my Forrest River trailer, great price and quick shipment. I always check prices on etrailer before shopping anywhere else, usually best price.

by:

I was disappointed it did not come with new mounting hardware.
I had to re-use some of the old and make a special trip to buy more.

by:

I was very happy with the response time for this product. I ordered new steps for my camper on the 3rd of the month and they were delivered on the 10th. They fit great and look great. Couldn’t be happier.

by:

This product is constructed better than the original it replaced. I also found a video presented by e-trailer that made the swapout very easy. Thanks e-trailer!!

by:

These steps are the sturdy option and exact replacement to my damaged steps. I hit a small tree stump making a tight turn in a campground and it caught the step and bent it back. Easier to buy a replacement than to try and restraighten it

by:

The steps are here I haven't installed them yet but the traction tape wasn't installed right. It's ripped apart and not sticking to the steps. But other than that I love that they showed up so quick.

by:

So far the steps have been just what we needed for our hay wagon. Only reason I didn't say Excellent is that we have not yet put them to the test of dozens of people stepping up on them.

From the package they look great and I have no reason so far to think that they wouldn't serve us well.

by:

The steps are excellent and working quite well. We are very happy with them.
