Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/23/2024

Question:

My trailer axle is 71 inches. I’m looking for a 1 ton or 2200 / 2500 pound axle. 5 x 4 1/2. Pattern. Can you assist please. I see a lot of 72 inch axles.

Hi Dennis; a 71" axle is not something that we carry. However, you can use an axle like the Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs - 5 on 4-1/2 Bolt Pattern - 72" Long - 2,000 lbs # e37YR as a replacement. This will stick out an extra 1/2" on either side but it isn't enough of a difference to be a problem.

The only other thing that you may need to do is move the spring seats. This axle has a 58" spring center measurement so if yours are different you will have to cut them off and weld on # TRSS175 to match your current measurement. I understand that is a lot of extra work so the other option is to check with an axle manufacturer like Dexter to see if they have an exact match.

Hey Dennis, did the 72-inch trailer axle end up working as a good replacement for your setup? Knowing how that small width difference affected your fit could help others looking at the same option. Your update could make it easier for the next person with the same issue.
