How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

This was a great replacement for our 4 year old Keystone Springdale trailer jack that bit the dust. Installation was easy and is much faster and quieter than our RAM jack that came with the trailer. I did sand down the paint on the contact points to make sure of a good ground then painted over what was exposed. I liked it so much I'll be looking at getting one for my large utility trailer.

Still working great after a year of use

by:

It arrived quickly and I installed it the same day. Installation was simple and straight forward. It works great. I highly recommend. I installed this jack on a Lance 1575 travel trailer. So glad I finally did this!

by:

Shipping was exceptionally fast, the jack works great, although I can for see the rubber on the toggle switches will probably either wear quickly or possibly the weather/sun will deteriorate sooner than later.

by:

So far not satisfied with this jack. It was easy enough to install BUT the up down switch is reversed so up is down and down is up. The motor will make 1 lift and shut off for 10 sec. or so. defantley not worth this kind of money

It does sound like this jack may need replacing. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you to assist.

by:

Great product, should include wiring in structions.

by:

we ordered the jack .It shipped quickly. easy installation no problems works great.

by:

Works excellent! Highly recommended!

by:

The Strindberg jack works like a charm. I especially like that it automatically shuts off before it runs out of jack room on the shaft, both up or down. Really great product.

by:

The jack is great. Works perfectly.
Not
too happy with whatever delivery service was used. Left this leaning against my mailbox at the edge of the street…
But it came quickly and wasn’t stolen.

by:

Nice unit, dropped right in. Goes up and down. Haven’t used it yet under load, but sure makes it easier to connect and disconnect the trailer.

by:

Jack installation was quick and easy. I have bought a lot of trailer equipment from Etrailer and they have been very good company to deal with.

by:

Great jack for the money!

by:

This jack did not work right out of the box. It would retract but would not extend. Not only that, but when I tried to use the manual jack handle the unit would not work either. I had to use a bottle jack to get the trailer off my truck. etrailer was extremely helpful and helped me choose a different unit. They promptly sent to me the return shipping label for this defective unit.

by:

Thank you etrailer people for your fine service. I can not really rate this jack until I use it for at least a few months. But I can say that this electric jack works great just out of the box and it came with all the proper hardware for a good installation.

Well a year later and all is well. We treat our jacks well and completely cover them in a plastic bag.The switches can be operated with the bag on.

by:

Very easy to install. Much more sturdier then the previous one.

by:

Installed easily with the parts provided. Works smoothly and quietly.

by:

The new SC jack shipped quickly. Easy to install on my 20 ft. power tilt car carrier because I was only replacing a cheap electric jack from [online vendor] that had just failed rather than a new install.
I did have to turn the star washers over because the pointy side has to scratch through the paint to make a good ground contact but everything else was easy-peasy. You can tell that this new jack is a much more quality product. Works great/ much quieter than the old power jack. Thanks etrailer!!

by:

The jack is in a slow failure mode. There seems to be some resistance in the jack as it keeps getting slower and slower at one year old. I’m waiting for the day it completely stops working. Voltage and ground are normal.

I have gotten in contact with the manufacturer. We are needing some more information in order to assist you better. Do you have a 30 Amp Fuse attached correctly? Make sure it is not loose or anything. Also please check to make sure that you have at least 12 volts coming to the jack. If it is less then 6, you will need to recharge the battery or change it. Also please look at all the wires inside the head of the jack to make sure nothing has come loose. One thing it could be, is if the jack was not hooked up as the instructions state, then it could be an issue with something in the RV. This is not a normal thing to happen with a jack that is one year old.

by:

I just installed the jack and haven't had chance to use it yet
I will know more next week when i return from camping to let you know how it performs
As far as delivery I am well satisfied with the amount of time in which I received it
Thank You

by:

This 2nd elec Jack I’ve purchased & very happy with them

by:

etrailer helped me with no questions asked when a product came damaged by UPS. Got me a replacement before I could even box up the broken one to ship back.

by:

Sent an open package we should have refused!! It turned out to be defective. Took my time to install for nothing!!! Thank God Stromberg is sending a replacement. Leaves a bad tast to ever order from etrailer again. They dumped a unit on us that should have been tested first!

by:

Came fast and installed it, it works up and down so got to see how long it last. Was easy to install and hooke would recommend if it for better than a hand crank

by:

Box was in bad shape jack was up side down in box up looks ok you need to look at your packing

by:

Was ready to move our trailer to winter storage and found out that the electric jack was frozen up. Would not even hand crank. Needed a new jack fast. New trailer jack from eTrailer came in only two days in spite of snow storm. Easy to install so we are back in business.

  • Is a Bulldog A-Frame Electric Trailer Jack a Good Replacement for an LCI Jack
The Bulldog A-frame trailer jack # BD500199 is an excellent choice. I don't see any reason why you would have to rotate it 90 degrees for installation so no worries there. The easiest way to get more clearance between the tow vehicle and trailer is to just use a longer ball mount than what you have now. If interested I have linked the fixed ball mount main page for you. The Husky Brute HT87247 was a good jack but is now discontinued. I would now recommend the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR...

  • Troubleshooting Husky Powered A-Frame Jack that Only Lights Work On
Sounds like a switch is bad on the Husky jack. This would have to be sourced at an electronics store. Also, the power supply feeding the jack may not be sufficient for the load to raise and lower the jack; the 12v feed on a vehicle 7-way may not be delivering amount of current the jack needs. A power jack often needs a dedicated trailer-mounted battery to get the required lifting power. If you do have a dedicated battery, check and make sure you have a good ground at the jack mount with...

  • Trailer Jack Recommendation For 14,000 Lb A-frame Dump Trailer
The rule of thumb for estimating a tongue weight is 10-15 percent of trailer weight. So your 14,000 pound trailer would have a tongue weight between 1400 lbs and 2100 lbs so any trailer jack rated over 2,500 lbs would be sufficient to lift the trailer's tongue however I recommend a higher capacity and high quality designed jack because they tend to last a bit longer. The most common reason for a trailer jack to stop working is because of friction that breaks down the gears and and over-extension. I...

I wish we carried a replacement leg but we do not at this time. Only option we have is a new jack. For a replacement, I recommend the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR. • Replacement A-Frame Trailer Jack
Your best option is to replace the jack and drill 3 new holes into the trailer. A-frame jacks have a standard bolt pattern that's roughly 3 inches on center from hole to hole. Generally the holes on the jack are slotted to allow for slight variances in the measurement and different hole sizes. Our most popular electric A-frame jack is the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR. It has stops to prevent overextending or retracting - which is the cause of failure on most jacks. If you prefer a manual...

If the hole in your A-frame will accommodate those dimensions, and the tongue weight of your trailer is not greater than its 3,500 lb capacity, the # LC285318 will work for you. I have found that when it comes to powered jacks, overkill is a good thing. Getting the highest rated jack possible will result in quicker operation and longer life. • Husky Brute Electric Trailer Jack Will Not Extend/Retract But Light Works
If you have power entering the extend/retract switch on the Husky Brute Trailer Jack, but not leaving then the switch is bad and will need to be replaced. It would also be worthwhile to re-ground the jack on the frame but again I believe the switch is your issue. If power passes through the swith then you are looking at a motor problem, or perhaps the foot is stuck due to over extension. As the motor and gears are not replaceable you may need a new jack. We don't carry the EAZ brand of powered a-frame jacks so it's a bit harder to speculate. Sundowner made both bumper-pull A-frame trailers and gooseneck trailers in 1998 but it sounds like you have a bumper-pull A-frame type and need an electric tongue jack. We like to suggest using an electric tongue jack with more weight capacity than you will actually need, since this this tends to improve both reliability and the jack's working lifespan. The circuit breaker of the Ultra-Fab Electric A-Frame Jack # UF38-944017 is designed to prevent the motor from drawing too much amperage and damaging itself. If you were to lower the jack all the way and then keep holding the button you eventually would trip the breaker, but more importantly you would potentially damage the threads of the internal screw of the jack which would permanently break it. A trailer's tongue weight is usually between 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. So if your trailer is 10,000 pounds its tongue weight should be between 1,000 to 1,500 pounds. Most electric jacks will be able to handle this with ease and it's also pretty common for trailer jacks to be rated higher than necessary.
