How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I have had problems with inadequate clearance between the lift gate of my Ford F150 and tongue jack motors on prior travel trailers. Some lifts allow the motor to be rotated sideways, but the bulky Lippert that came with my new Winnebago TT didn't. The Bulldog is made to be mounted either forward or sideways and has a particularly narrow body. Installation was a snap, and I drilled holes to rotate the bubble level to be aligned fore and aft. I opted not to use the clever Plunger Pin Kit which is mounted to be pulled from the side because when the unit is mounted sideways, the pin with its fairly stiff spring would have to be deployed and operated either fore or aft beneath the hitch or the tongue assembly. So I am using the original lynchpin assembly for the drop leg.

Now I have plenty of clearance between the Bulldog lift, the F150 drop gate and the propane tanks and cover.

I am extremely pleased with everything about the purchase. The jack was described very accurately, I had a question before delivery about the fit on my R-Pod which was answered very thoroughly and the jack arrived on time. The installation was quick and easy. The jack operates very smoothly. The features of the LEDs, the quick pull pin for the drop foot and the bubble level are perfect for my application.

The Bulldog Jack has been great!

I installed this electric jack on my 3-horse bumper pull trailer. I'm using power straight from the truck's RV 7 wire hook-up. I, along with my family are so glad I installed this every time we hook up to the trailer. The adjustable leg is also an added benefit. I also purchased the termination box and this allowed for a superior installation by putting all the terminations in a water proof box versus open wire joints. Thanks etrailer for your support and your quality products.

Still lifting and lowering my trailer as designed. Having used the jack up to 6-8 times a month, I is withstanding the rigors of hauling. The little bubble level on top of the jack is pretty much useless in my application besides, the bubble is now about the length of the vial. Short of that, Id recommend to others. I am please with this product and sometimes wonder if I should have purchased the next size up.

I have a 2007 14' V-noise extra wide and tall trailer, and the jack was needing to be replaced. I figured it was a good time to think about a powered lift option. After spending several days doing research, I determined that the Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack, was the best product to meet my needs. etrailer has this product for the best price online, and offered free shipping, so for basically $100 more than a high quality none powered replacement jack, It was a no-brainer.

My wife and I installed the unit on my trailer that was still on my tow vehicle in less than 45 minutes, and everything we needed minus a weather proof inline connector was included. It was so easy to install, and looked so good after installation.

Because of the size and weight of my trailer, hooking and unhooking my trailer used to be a real chore for me, since I am older and have back problems. Then it was time for the true test, dropping the trailer for the first time.

WOW! The spring loaded pin for the drop leg made it so easy! No more need for the several wood blocks we needed to lug around. Also it was now dark, so I turned on the lights. What a difference! The video does not do the lights justice. They clearly illuminate the rear of the tow vehicle, and front of the A-frame of the trailer.

Then, by simply pushing the weather proof button, a chore I used to dread, that left me sore and sweaty, was now effortless! Quiet, smooth operation, and built in stops for extra protection.

Very solid high quality construction, with all the features you need and want. The all weather design, powder coated metal parts make it easy to understand the reason why the manufacturer offer a 5-year warranty.

I am only left with one question...why did I wait so long to buy this great product at the lowest price from Etrailer?

I purchase this item to replace a 12 year old power jack. I’m spoiled and I’ll never go back to a manual jack. The jack feels and looks like a high-quality unit. All hardware was individual packaged. Installation went smoothly following the excellent directions.

I’ve run the jack up and down a couple of times and it functions smoothly and quietly. The drop-leg is an excellent design.

I look forward to many years of service from this jack.

I have found a flaw in the jack. The metal rod used to release the foot is made from pretty junky metal. It got hung-up in my chains while I was lowering the jack and bent. The deflection was pretty minimal - I caught it very quickly - yet when I bent the long leg of the rod back, it broke off. For the price, I’m not impressed with this aspect of the jack. It has rendered the [] leg useless as I had to secure it in place so it didn’t fall out.

The trailer tongue jack arrived undamaged and fits perfectly.

I bought an electric trailer jack. The price was fair, shipping was fast, and item was exactly as described.

Great service!

The Bulldog Powered Trailer Jack was a perfect fit for my Jayco White Hawk travel trailer. Installation was easy and the switches are easy to operate and are clearly marked. The customer service reps were awesome!

by:

I love my trailer jack. I was so tired of cranking and this is so easy. Just what I wanted!

by:

Easy to install, works well. Used it to replace another jack that died after 5 years. It would be good if they included the electric hook up instructions with it. If I didn’t have the earlier jack connections I would have had a much more difficult time installing.

by:

Quick easy installation, all hardware provided, lights are just enough to see what your doing, only reason it's not 5 stars is because I've used it long enough to test. But it will be used daily, so testing won't take long, oh by the way shipping was 10 stars, haven't had a package arrive like it was supposed to in long time. Thanks everyone involved etrailer!

by:

Shipped on time, easy to install, great product and service, very happy.

  • Recommendation for Moving a Trailer Since Wheels are Not Available on Powered A-Frame Jacks
Electric A-Frame trailer jacks generally do not come with wheels or have options for wheels. The reason is that the wheels are rated much lower than the jack. So for example if a wheel were used on jack # BD500200 the capacity would be limited to the 1,000 pounds of the wheel even though the jack is rated for 4,000 pounds. A better option would be to use whatever jack you want and then use a trailer dolly such as # TVXL2 or # TVXL25. Both of these models are chain-driven and have high...

  • Troubleshooting Bulldog Power Jack BD500186 that Drains Trailer Battery After Several Uses
First you will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the 12 volt accessory circuit of your 7-way. There should be voltage on this circuit, if not check the fuses of your tow vehicle as most likely one has blown. This is probably the issue. If there is voltage there you will want to test the wire that leads to the battery with the trailer connector connected but the wire disconnected from the battery so that you can tell if the voltage on the circuit is coming from the...

  • How To Maintain Charge In Trailer Battery That Will Run A Powered Trailer Jack On A Pace Trailer
You will want to use a standard 12 volt deep cycle trailer battery to operate the Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack, part # BD500200. You will NOT want to use a trailer breakaway battery. The breakaway battery is not designed to power other trailer accessories or lighting, it is just designed to operate the breakaway system. • Replacement Electric Tongue Jack that Will Allow Full Opening of Tailgate on Tow Vehicle
I have a solution for you, but the Bulldog # BD500200 is only going to be about 2" shorter than you current jack, and I think we can do a little bit better than that to make sure that you get full use of the tailgate on your 2019 Chevy Suburban. When choosing a trailer jack, it will need to be able to lift the tongue weight of your trailer and not the entire weight of the trailer; your 7000-lbs trailer should be in the neighborhood of 1000-lbs tongue weight when the trailer is fully loaded...

  • Wiring Options for Installation of a Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack # 500185
Ideally you would wire the Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack, part # BD500200, to a separate battery. Normally trailers with powered jacks have an auxiliary battery that is used to power accessories. If there is not a separate battery on your trailer, you could power the jack from the 12 volt power source in your 7-pin trailer connector.. Here is how you would wire it to your 7-pin connector: On the 7-pin connector that is on your tow vehicle there should be a red or black wire that...

  • Can I Wire and Electric Trailer Jack Directly to the Truck Battery
You could technically wire an electric trailer jack directly to your truck's battery, but that isn't really the most practical setup. I've seen one guy pull out his jumper cables every time he wanted to use the jack in this fashion, but I can't say the safety factor didn't worry me. Another thing to consider is that the wire gauge used on electric trailer jacks isn't the most ideal for running up to the front of a truck due to the wire length required and the amp draw of the jack motor....

  • Powered Bulldog Jack Recommendation for a 2011 Dodge Ram 1500 to Help Install Spring Bars of WD
The Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack # BD500200 would do well as a powered jack for your 6500 lb trailer. It would also work to jack up your trailer to install the weight distribution system you have. This jack can lift trailers with up to 4,000 lbs of tongue weight. Typically the tongue weight of a trailer is 10-15% of the total weight of the trailer. So when your trailer is empty you would have a tongue weight of 650-975 lbs which the # BD500185 would make easy work of.

  • Replacement Jack Recommendation for Damaged Bulldog Powered A-Frame Jack
That is a really frustrating way to damage a jack. I wish we had the components you'd need to fix your Bulldog part # BD500200 that you referenced but Bulldog basically only offers replacement switches for this jack. You are going to need a new jack. I think the best value for an A-frame tongue jack is the Stromberg Carlson # SC63VR which is rated for 4500 pounds of tongue weight. This is 1000 pounds more than other models, and even though you may not need this much capacity, you will...

  • Can Bulldog Powered Drive Trailer Jack BD500200 be Powered by 7-Way
Whether or not the Bulldog 4000 powered a-frame jack part # BD500200 can be powered by a vehicle 7-way comes down to the amperage rating of the 12 volt trailer accessory circuit. This is rated for up to 35 amps so as long as you had a 40 amp fuse for this circuit which is pretty common you could power the jack from your 7-way. Most likely this is the case.

  • Could the Bulldog Jack part # BD500185 Use a Previous Powered Jacks Wiring to Install
The Bulldog Jack part # BD500200 should install just fine with the previous jack's wiring as long as the wire from the previous jack has the same gauge as the wire from this jack. If the previous wire looks much thinner then I would recommend you not reuse it and run new wire. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting Bulldog Jack that The Switch Has to Be Pressed a Few Times Before it will Activate
It sounds like you may have an intermittent ground issue. Since the part # BD500200 grounds through the mounting hardware you will want to make sure the metal it attaches to is clean and free of corrosion. You also want to make sure the main ground wire from the trailer connector is connected to a clean metal surface. It might not hurt to check the power wire connection as well. Make sure it is making a solid connection. The switches for this jack aren't offered as a replacement part.
