Superb, top-of-the-line CUSTOMER SERVICE from etrailer!! System installed quite easily on my Jayco Skylark. Engineering of camera and installation accessories, along with instructions, seemed top-notch to me. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality signal that my iPhone received from the camera transmitter. Perhaps I can add more once I get connected and set out for our next camping trip.

Comments
Product is working fine. In my own case, an amout of left-to-righ adjustment would have, but I am still happy with my purchase.

After receiving I did not install on my trailer for several months until after I removed the fading stickers and re-polished the exterior.

I was very excited to buy and receive until I installed it and started using. I am not very happy with the camera. I installed it on the back of my 24’ trailer and tapped power from the top center running light. The video display on my IPhone is grainy, choppy and freezes after about a minute of use. During daytime use I have to turn the running lights off then back on to reset the camera after about a minute of use. I cant see at all when I am backing up if its dark, even with the extra lights I installed on the back of my trailer.

I wish I was happier with the performance.

I do not recommend.

Comments
I reached out to the manufacturer about the grainy signal that you are receiving. The best solution is to mount the antenna as high as possible to have the best signal. You can also purchase a longer antenna if the antenna cannot be mounted higher. You will want to keep the length of the antenna under two feet.

Wow - The VueSmartRV and Trailer Backup Camera is exactly what I needed! It’s like a Body-cam for my highwall popup trailer. I cannot see behind the trailer at all, when in reverse. This saves me from having to get out to assess and reassess my surroundings. The WiFi signal easily connects to my Moto Z2 (Android) phone through the Hopkins Towing Solutions App. What I like about the camera is that it provides a clear picture of the view behind my popup and there’s no delay or choppiness in its motion. I reversed the bracket so that the marker light is located under the camera. In my case, I benefit most from such a setup since my spare tire blocks the lower portion of my field of view on the screen.

Comments
The product still works very well for my purposes a year in. The only issue Ive experienced is that at night-time, there is an LED light that stays on, and because it is white, it blinds those behind me. I wound up selling the trailer a few months ago and sold the camera with it. Although I never tried it, I came to understand that that there is a setting inside the App, which can turn that light off.

I LOVE IT!!!! JUST NEED TO REMEMBER THAT IT WON'T WORK WITHOUT LIGHTS TURNED ON. HAS A SLIGHT LEARNING CURVE BUT I AM NOW ABLE TO BACK INTO MY STORAGE SPOT OR CAMPSITE WITHOUT ASSISTANCE EVERY TIME. I HAVE A 30FT. TRAILER AND ANOTHER 15FT. UP TO ME IN THE CAB AND RECEPTION HAS ALWAYS BEEN
RIGHT ON. INSTALLATION IS EASY TOO. GREAT TOOL!!!

by:

On my way to our destination I had very bad luck with my phone keeping connected to the camera, so I tried a different phone (older) both android, I used it and had a rock solid connection for over 300 miles!! I had placed the phone in a different place because I do not have a mount that will work with both. About 50 miles from my destination I moved the phone I was using as the monitor down 10 or so inches to where the first phone was on the first trip and it started to freeze and loose connection.... it was where the phone was not the phone itself. I am using this on a 23 ft 5th wheel camper about 33 ft from camera to phone. Once learning where the phone needs to be I would suggest this camera to anyone who needs one.

by:

Simple to install. Wiring in my camper was slightly different but easily adapted.

Camera works great. Nice clear picture even when moving. Phone app is easy to use.

I would definitely recommend this product and purchase again.

by:

Works okay as backup camera. Slight time delay in video. Nothing major. Don't expect to use this camera to keep track of traffic behind trailer. Camera does not keep up at high speeds, and freezes.

by:

Although I have not installed the unit on the trailer yet due to weather, I did ru a test with a temporary connection. The unit is impressive. Good picture quality and features. Good price. It will be installed on my cargo trailer. I expect i will not only use it for baking up assistance but, also help driving to insure safer lae changing, etc.
My installation to be somewhat unique as the tailgate door leave little room to the roof. I have the installation well planned. Also I will provide a 12 volt weatherproof socket. Also provide a plug on the camera. With those additions I can remove the camera easily when not used for some time or during prolonged bad weather.

Comments
Since installed Ive used the camera several times both for backup parking and on the road to see whats behind me. It works great and serves me well. My only comment is the bracket and mounting required a major thought and modification. Perhaps at a future date Ill submit a photo of the installed unit.

I use it in co junction with iPhone X to mainly keep an eye on my bike rack behind the camper. It's OK for my application but not great. Nice picture, good installation video with nice tips on etrailer.com. Major problem is encountered should your phone go into sleep mode or you get a call or switch apps or lose wifi connection. Then I have to shut down phone and -connect all over again as the video freezes due to one of these events. Also as you drive through towns with roadside businesses that have strong wifi signals, then you lose wifi connection resulting in picture freeze and need to shutdown phone and start up phone snd camera all over again - major pain.
I use this camera in conjunction with my iPhone X. My travel trailer is 30’ long and I do not have any signal connectivity issues at this length. I use it primarily to keep an eye out on my bike rack mounted on the trailers rear hitch and at times when reversing into a parking space. Picture quality is very good. Installation was fairly straight forward. I recommend watching the etrailer.com video on this as there are a couple of helpful hints that will make installation go smoother. I did have an issue with the camera losing WiFi signal as I went through towns and settlements with stronger WiFi signal along roadside businesses than the WiFi signal from the camera resulting in the camera to freeze and in turn required me to shut down the phone and restart the application. Jenny from trailer.com reached out to the manufacturer and came back with the manufacturers suggestion to turn OFF the phones option to automatically connect to WiFi signals (in your phones settings under WiFi). This will take care of this issue. What great customer service!!! Very nice product for the price and even better customer service from etrailer.com”

Comments
I reached out to Hopkins about the issues with the backup camera that you are having. With how the WiFi connection is set with the camera it can be interrupted if the phone is set to auto join with WiFi networks. You can turn this off in the phone settings and make sure that the Hopkins app stays connected while using the camera.

This is a pretty easy install and has the means of adapting to many types of trailers. I’ve attached mine to my car hauler. With the drip rail below the center lamp, I didn’t want to mount it with the entire bracket, as it would then place the camera above the lamp and the lamp might distort the camera image at night. So I cut the bracket and mounted the camera below the drip rail. From watching the installation video, I didn’t even want to attempt to cut the wires to splice them and possibly loose a wire. So I chose to use the scotch-lock type connector with crimp on blade connector on the camera pigtail after drilling an access hole below the drip rail and feeding it up through the center lamp opening. See pictures attached.
The video seems okay. There is a lag here and there.
I will put it to full use this weekend when I return from a car show.

by:

the Hopkins VueSMART trailer backup camera I ordered from you. I installed it, but there was no signal from it. I confirmed 13.82 Vdc getting to its circuit board. Informed Hopkins Mfg of the inoperative camera. They're sending me a replacement, but felt you should know about my experience with the one I received.

by:

I installed the camera today following the video clips provided. It is important to know for certain which power lead is hot and which is the neutral because if you get them wrong your camera will not work. I learned that the hard way. Don’t trust the wire colors of your trailer. The camera works great and I love the lane guides when backing up my trailer into a tight corner.

Comments
Yes we do recommend that you test all wiring for every application because each trailer manufacturer is different.
-- Etrailer Expert Katrina B - 04/04/2022

by:

Easy to set up and use. Reasonably good detail. Only issue is video lag. At least a second or two from what i see to what is actually happening. Especially critical when backing up or changing lanes.

Comments
You will need to make sure that you turn off auto connect as it may be trying to connect your phone to different wi-fi which could be causing the lagging issue.

I spent a lot of time trying to get the camera to work. I called VueSmart and spoke with them. I did everything the instructions and Vue Smart suggested. I could never get the camera to transmit a video signal. I took it off put it back in the box and put on a shelf. My advice is to not but this backup camera it does not work. $100.00 down the drain. The camera turned on and appeared to create a wifi signal but would never transmit the video. Hopkins said that I needed to close all apps and restart the phone, which I did. This did not help. Hopkins said that other apps could interfere with their app. I tried many things including removing the Hopkins App and reinstalling. I tried for several hours to get it to work nothing helped. I have been using computers for some 35 years. Before I retired I was a professional photographer and used digital cameras tethered to computers with various hard drives and accessories. This is the first time I have not been able to get something to work and gave up.

Comments
I will have our customer service team reach out to you. The camera does have a limited 1 year warranty.

by:

The mounting of the camera is ideal and innovative but the communication with the smart device is very poor. Sitting in my driveway I could see behind me but while on the road, it kept losing connection and freezing up. Also, when it was working, it was a very slow frame rate. Don’t count on using this to use while trying to change lanes. Very bad latency. At first I thought it was my older iPhone 7 but did not make a difference with my wife’s iPhone 13. Will be planning on returning.

Comments
I am wondering if you have tried starting the set up by turning off the auto connect option for Wi Fi in your phone first. A lot of time your phone will be searching for other Wi Fi signals and this can cause your camera to freeze up.

by:

I have two of these cameras and I totally love them. I have one on my camper trailer(30ft) and one on my job trailer. I was able to put 2 old Smartphones to great use. I highly recommend them.

by:

Set up in my office and downloaded software Tomy android phone, connect to it's WiFi and walked around the house and could still see the image. Planning to use on a portable mount so can hang on my tailgate on either of my older trucks without backup cameras. And attach to back of pontoon boat when putting in water.

by:

This would work great for a travel trailer or a box trailer but I tried to use it on my 35 foot fifth wheel and it did not work properly due to the total length of pickup and trailer. I loved the concept of not having an additional monitor inside the pickup truck but unfortunately it did not work for my application.

Comments
The VueSMART RV and Trailer Backup Camera has a range of 50 feet. A backup camera that has a longer range and you can still use your phone as the monitor would be the Rampage Wireless Backup Camera Part # RA7710

It was easy to install but terrible to use.Images on your phone screen are very difficult to see good enough to prevent a problem. I tried it about three, four times and that's it, no more.I can do better without it.

Comments
I reached out to the manufacturer about the difficulties with the signal that you are receiving. The best solution is to mount the antenna as high as possible to have the best signal.

by:

Camera works but it updates the view slowly and somewhat choppy at times. The view from a cell phone is really small and hard to see because of the screen size. Using a tablet would be better. However, because it does not give a constant view without updating it is not reliable to use for backing. It does work well to initially see if anything is behind the trailer.

Installation was easy, as long as you have a power source. I used the parking lights, so to power the camera I need to turn on the parking lights on the truck. This works well as long as you remember to turn on the lights during day time use.

This can be a helpful system as long as the price is low. I would not pay more than $XXX for it if we're to buy it again.

Comments
Wireless cameras typically have a lag that require the video to catch up. For this camera there are only 20 frames per second. The benefit of this system compared to others, is that it is wireless so you can use your mobile device, while some, even though they may have a faster picture, require a wired separate monitor that installs in your cab like Furrion item # FOS07TASF
Furrion Vision S Wireless RV Backup Camera System w/ Night Vision - Rear Mount - 7" Screen

I bought this camera to put on my camper as a back up camera, to view when I could pull in safely in traffic. I have never been so disappointed in the product from etrailer. I’ve bought other products I’ve been very happy.
I called the manufacture and the only help they gave me was to put a booster on the camera. As soon as I start driving it quits.
I took it off and it is no longer in use. Very disappointing!!!

Comments
I contacted the manufacturer for some tips about connectivity and they said if the RV is metal, this makes it difficult to connect to the WIFI. If your vehicle plus camper is beyond 50 feet the WIFI can be questionable. One good tool is to check the signal strength of the WIFI on your phone in the cab. If it is a poor signal or below 40 percent you will have difficulty. Also, be sure that the phone is locked in on the camera WIFI only and not searching for a higher signal.
-- Etrailer Expert Sierra K - 12/15/2021

by:

So far it has exceeded my expectations. I am replacing a furron system with this as the furrion is extremely difficult to see the image. The documentation is bare basic on instillation. A bit more detail and/or photoes might help. Also, if the antenna holder could be integrated as part of the holder rather than having to make holes in the camper to hold it would be appreciated

Comments
it has worked well but does have some issues that are similar to others. The contrast in bright light is not as good as could be - possibly my judgement. The unit has a habit of going off line at times and needs to be rest. Not a problem if you have a second person along. Slightly hard by yourself

I’ve had this camera for a year and am extremely pleased with it. It’s so helpful to see exactly where I’m backing the travel trailer. I love the backup camera feature on my GMC Sierra and had to have one for my travel trailer as well. My wife uses and loves it too.

by:

Camera is great! App kept crashing on newer LG phone. Works better on older Samsung. Only 1-2 sec lag. Toggle off LED's before you hit the road. Real test in 2wks on next trip. Picture quality is very good! EZ install. May or may not install antenna holder. Customer Service is the best in the business as always.

by:

This is a pretty neat item. Pricing is reasonable. WiFi works very well. My only issue is starting up the program when I go on a drive with my trailer or need to park it somewhere. The user interface seems kind of clunky, as I have to attempt to start the software multiple times to get to the camera. It may just be me. I am hoping so. I would give this thing a "5" rating except for that.

Comments
After a year, I still like this backup camera. Noe the interface is a bit clunky, but it seems to hook up more easily the more I use it - probably because there is a best sequence of starting it up. This system is moderatley proced and I dont think it is intended for someone that needs it available all the time, as in a commercial situation. I use it primarily for parking my trailer at home, so I can position it close to my garage door without ramming the front of the garage. I have painted a white li9ne on the floor of the garage just indside the garage, and when that line is at the bottom of the screen, then I know the trailer is properly positioned. I am intending to use the camera as a form of watching traffic behind me, especially at night, so I have purchased a second unit that can be aimed for that purpose. Havent installed it yet, so the efficacy of that use will perhaps be the subject of a further review.

Where is the camera positioned on the rear of the camper? According to the folks at Hopkins, the # HM34FR trailer back up camera works best when the camera/antenna is placed at the top of the camper's back wall so that the antenna extends just a bit over the height of the roof. This maximizes the range of the camera. The camera has a 50 foot range when unobstructed, but the camper can prevent communication between the camera and your phone.
