CURT Trailer Brake Controller - C39QV

Highlights

  • Custom Fit for Your Vehicle: Works with your vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Smooth, controlled stops: Proportional braking syncs trailer and tow vehicle for even deceleration.
  • Clean, clutter-free cab: Under-dash mount keeps the unit hidden and knees clear.
  • Easy setup in minutes: Plug-and-play harness connects to factory port with no hardwiring.
  • Control from your phone: Bluetooth and OneControl app adjust output, sensitivity, and manual brake.
  • Ready for any trailer: Works with 1–4 axles and electric trailer brakes.

Features to know about

Hides Out of Sight Under the Dash: Keeps the Cab Clean and Comfortable

Bulky brake controllers take up space and get in the way, but this one mounts completely out of sight under the dash. The main unit is only 3-3/8" long x 3" wide x 7/8" thick, so it fits neatly behind trim panels. With nothing sticking out, you keep full knee room and a clean interior. Once mounted, diagnostic LEDs on the box give quick feedback during setup or troubleshooting.

Tows Smoothly on Any Road: Proportional Braking with 3-Axis Accelerometer

Uneven braking can make towing stressful. This controller uses a built-in 3-axis accelerometer to deliver proportional braking—your trailer brakes match how hard or soft you’re braking. It works with trailers that have 1 to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies) and supports electric trailer brakes. The result is steady, predictable deceleration that protects your tires and brake pads over time.

Controls Everything from Your Phone: Bluetooth and OneControl App

Instead of knobs and dials, all your settings live in the OneControl app on your smartphone. Through Bluetooth, you can adjust max output, fine-tune sensitivity, hit manual override, and even turn on hazard light mode. You can save multiple trailer profiles too—perfect when swapping between different rigs. Once paired, the system stays connected automatically and keeps working safely even if your phone loses signal.

Installs Fast with Plug-and-Play Harness: No Splicing or Hardwiring Needed

Setup is simple. The included custom harness plugs straight into the factory brake control port under the dash—no cutting or splicing required. Mount the small control box using the supplied adhesive pad or zip ties, pair it with your phone, and plug in the trailer’s 7-way connector. A green LED confirms calibration in seconds, so you can set your brake preferences and be ready to tow almost immediately.

Built for Reliable Performance: Smart Protection and Long Warranty

Peace of mind comes built in with reverse polarity and short circuit protection that keep your vehicle wiring safe. It’s covered by a limited lifetime warranty on the brake controller and a 1-year warranty on the harness, giving you confidence that this compact under-dash system is ready for years of towing duty.

Specs

Application

  • Application: trailers with 1 to 4 axles (8 brake assemblies)
  • Compatible with: electric trailer brakes

Dimensions

  • Main unit dimensions: 3-3/8" long x 3" wide x 7/8" thick

Smart Device Requirements

  • Apple: 5.0 and newer
  • Android: 4.3 and newer

Screenshot of Curt Echo OneControl app showing manual override button, brake output indicator, max output, sensitivity level, and vehicle hazard light settings for Bluetooth brake controller.

  • 1. Manual Override: This big orange button in the middle of the app is your manual override. Press and hold the button, and the brake controller will smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in an emergency.
  • 2. Brake Output Indicator: The outer ring gives you a visual indicator of how much power is being applied to the trailer brakes. This is determined by your max output setting.
  • 3. Max Output: Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop.
  • 4. Sensitivity Level: This controls the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the max output level.
  • 5. Vehicle Hazard Lights: If you turn on your vehicle's hazard lights, there’s a chance the trailer brakes will pulse on and off as the lights flash. Turn this setting on any time you activate your hazard lights to prevent this problem.

Warranty

  • Brake controller: Limited lifetime
  • Wiring harness: Limited 1-year

Note

  • Bluetooth connection loss: If Bluetooth connection is lost, the brake controller will continue to function safely, using the most recently programmed settings. This brake controller is not compatible, but will not interfere, with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
  • 7-way plug recommendation: If you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle, take a look at our exclusive 7- and 4-way brake controller installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately).

What is Proportional Braking?

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

Works perfect on my 2026 RAM 1500 pick up. One big advantage of ordering from etrailer is the information they have on their website that shows where the location of components and how to complete the installation. Highly recommended:

Just got my trailer brake installed, took less than 30 minutes. The wiring harness that was made for my truck pugged in with no problem. I have already tried it and it works great. Shipping notifications were updated every day so I knew exactly when to expect it. Their pricing was competitive with eBay and Amazon. I cannot say enough good things about this company and their service, I highly recommend them.

by: John08/23/2022

This is the old obsolete model of Curt Echo which has to be installed under the dashboard. The newer version, which attaches to the electrical system in the rear of the vehicle, is superior and now preferred by most trailer owners. The above version should be taken off the catalog.

by: JimB 08/26/2024

This is my first proportional brake controller. Stopping is much smoother without sacrificing safety. Communication by bluetooth makes for a clean installation.

by: Andrew08/02/2017

Very happy with controler and bracket. Easy to install took me only minutes.

by: Steve H.02/25/2022

This controller took me literally 15 minutes to install with the required pigtail and my Rubicon with factory towing package installed. When I initially downloaded the app and connected, it actuated and locked the brakes. I simple deleted the app and reinstalled and everything worked normal.

Have a 2015 Dodge Ram 1500. After searching countless hours to find a "plug-n-play" trailer brake, I found etrailer. They sent me my trailer brake AND a pre-wired harness/adaptor that plugged right in to my existing harness under the dash. Awesome customer service!

by: Tim01/28/2019

I needed this adapter to connect the brake controller to my specific vehicle. Etrailer had it available when I bought the controller from them , so I ordered it. Easy connection, works great.

by: Chris10/03/2022

Was not aware this device draws on the battery constantly. I don't daily drive my truck and have had to replace the battery twice in one month due to being drained below the point where they could be recharged. $[XX] later and this controller removed, I've not had any problems with the battery

by: Scott09/18/2022

This brake controller has to be unplugged when not in use or it drains the battery in a few days. I had to have a electrical test done in my vehicle ($XXX). The etrailer tech said the test was done incorrectly. The Chevy dealer claims it was accurate. I’m left with a problem.

by: Earl 08/21/2023

Needed a brake controller I could rely on because I was pulling my camper to a site at the top of a 25% grade within a few days. Unit plugged right into the harness for the factory brake controller (with the adapter cable) on my 2014 Ford F-150,and worked perfectly. Bluetooth connectivity works through the app (rather than through the phone's "settings" icon),and connects instantly. I'm very pleased with this product.

I recently purchased a 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 and traded in my 2014 Dodge Ram. I had removed my Curt brake controller and was to install it in the new Ram. Unfortunately, the connections were not the same, and I needed an adaptor. I called etrailer and was extremely happy with the service. Tammy looked up my truck and controller and matched the adaptor. The process took less than 3 minutes. I received the adaptor in just days. Thank you Tammy for making this easy.

by: Patrick03/28/2022

As first time truck and pop-up trailer users, we initially purchased a cheaper brake controller that required drilling the dash. This is a new truck, so we decided to switch and spend more for the Bluetooth. etrailer was easy to work with for a return, and the Bluetooth brake controller is fantastic - so easy to use with our new trailer!

by: Chris 08/20/2022

I really wanted a trailer brake controller that I didn’t have to stick an ugly knob/box hanging off my dash. This was my solution and it works perfectly. Plugged right into my Honda Ridgeline existing plug, and easily connected to the app on my phone. Nice setup.

by: Andy T.10/19/2018

I just installed my Curt TriFlex Trailer Brake Controller C51140 in my new 2019 Ram 1500 Laramie 4x4 Crew Cab. Thanks to the Curt Custom Wiring Adapter for Trailer Brake Controllers - Dual Plug In # C51458, it only took 4-5 minutes. Hardest part was finding the factory connector under the dash to plug into. etrailer has this wiring adapter listed as "Not confirmed to work" for the 2019 Ram 1500 but after my test drive I'm very satisfied. Worked just as I expected. I'll update this review after I have more time behind the wheel towing.

by: Paul08/29/2022

I was looking for a trailer brake controller that did not require a permanent mounting to the dash or center console of my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. I initially considered the wireless bluetooth controller from Curt Echo that plugs directly into the 7-pin outlet next to the tow hitch. However, reviews from individuals that tow RV trailers identified that particular option prevents the 12v battery on the trailer from charging off of the TV while connected. This would limit the RV utilization during long trips involving boondocking.
The Curt Echo under-dash controller seems to solve that problem and uses the same user interface as the Curt Echo.
Easy to install and operate; problem solved!

by: Michael 04/05/2023

Easiest install ever !
Plug and play.
App is easy understand and use.
My favorite is with the app and on selected active profile you can see the amount of brake amount is being applied to the trailer when the vehicle brakes are applied. I also install the manual override button. FYI: you don’t need the app on your phone open for the controller or the manual override button to work. Also another nice feature of the manual override button is the size about the size of a quarter, uses a CR2032 battery and the battery level is displayed in the app.

by: James 12/19/2023

This was relatively easy to install under the dash of our 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee, especially since ours has the factory Trailer Tow Package and therefore an existing pigtail connector ready to connect to the brake controller. The Curt wiring adapter made it super easy to connect the Brake Controller to the vehicle's wiring harness. The controller was easy to calibrate and worked seamlessly while we're towing a rented trailer. We used a dedicated (older) cell phone to operate it while we're towing to avoid any potential interference from other apps rather than using our regular phone on which we receive phone calls texts, etc. This was our first time towing a trailer and this easy-to-use Brake Controller helped make us feel safe and comfortable. Highly recommended.

by: Dominick P.09/25/2019

It's very well made and would be simple to use, except two of the wires were switched. We used this with a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL, but apparently they are switched on newer Dodge trucks too. Unfortunately, the effect was that the trailer brakes stayed permanently on.

I believe it was the brake signal and the 12V wires that were switched. Unfortunately, I don't remember for sure, but etrailer support knew exactly the issue and told me which two they were.

There are two ways to fix this. The ugly way is to cut and splice the wires to their correct place. That's the way most people recommend, but there is actually an even easier way with no cutting: remove the orange insert from the end the plugs into your car's wiring (I believe there were tabs on the side that I had to press to do so). Now, you will be able to remove the wires/contacts from the connector, so simply switch the two that need to be switched. Click the orange piece back into place. Voila, it's fixed, no cutting required.

Anyway, apart from that wire switching issue, it's a nice product.

by: Robert03/12/2018

Came in exactly as I expected, looked up under the dash and found the wire, should be a ten minute install. Sure makes it easy when etrailer has your vehicle specific cable for install. Will have to add more when I get to use it under tow with my RV trailer.

The cable install fit perfect and my system works great, the install was less than five minutes. Thanks etrailer!

by: Markus08/18/2019

This harness made for a clean, splice-free install. I used this with a Jeep Gladiator which requires swapping the black and blue wires in the gray connector. The Gladiator is such a new truck, I could not find a good cross reference for the exact harness for a Curt Spectrum controller. I’m sure they have one by now or will very soon. I didn’t bother calling etrailer, I knew I could make this harness work. The wire swap took less than a minute, once you see the pin latches. Well worth the money to have a solid and clean install.

Curt does offer a wiring harness for the 2020 Jeep Gladiator and it is available as part # C51459. This harness has the correct plug configuration for the Gladiator and does not require swapping the black and blue wires.

Do not buy either the Curt Under-Dash or plug-in Wireless brake controllers until Lippert fixes the phone app. I’ve used both happily with the old ECHO Smart Control app. I could use the remote manual button with the phone app not even running. As one would reasonably expect the button talked to the controller directly via Bluetooth. The new OneControl Auto app must be running and in the foreground to use the manual remote! And the most recent version of ECHO Smart Control is non-functional, it just tells you to install OneControl Auto.

by: Matthew 11/25/2023

The break controller worked seamlessly. Profiles are easy to set up and it has very reliable Bluetooth connectivity with my phone. Installation was really easy on my Honda Pilot!

by: Brian04/21/2021

Great controller! Easy to adjust even on the fly. I had the controller adjusted a little aggressive and as I was trying to get out of Buffalo to go south for the winter we ran into some snow accumulation and was able to quickly dial back the controller to avoid locking up on thick snow covered roads. Literally a potential disaster! Very happy with the controller

by: Antonio05/08/2016

The product came very fast and it was super easy to install. It's working better than I thought, I'm very happy with www.etrailer.com and there products. Definitely worth every penny and everything top quality. Thanks!!!!
