The Curt Echo under-dash is all about simple use and easy install. With the main unit mounted out of sight behind the dash, all you need is your smartphone to control the settings on the brake controller. With this wireless operation, you won't have to worry about banging your knee on a bulky controller, cluttering up your dash, or ruining the sleek look of your interior.
The Curt Echo under-dash brake controller is managed entirely from the free ECHO Smart Control app on your smartphone. It connects via Bluetooth. From the simple, user-friendly app you can set the maximum braking output, adjust the braking sensitivity, and even apply the manual override. You can save multiple towing profiles in the app - a big plus if you have a fleet and want to be able to just select a profile and tow. And don't worry; after you've downloaded the app, you don't need to have data on to use the app with the brake controller.
Braking Output and Sensitivity
Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. To set your maximum braking output, select a level on the main screen of the app, going up to 100. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change.
You can also set the sensitivity, between 1 and 9, to control the aggressiveness of your trailer's braking, meaning how quickly the brakes reach the set output level. This is a great adjustment to make when you're towing a heavy load and the trailer will need more umph to bring it to a stop so it doesn't push your vehicle forward. If your vehicle takes too long to come to a stop, increase the setting. If it stops too abruptly, lower the setting. You may also need to adjust the sensitivity based on your own preferences, or when the trailer load or road conditions change.
Manual Override
The app also includes a manual override button. Press the big orange button in the middle of the screen to slowly and smoothly apply the trailer brakes without applying your vehicle's brakes. This is perfect for stopping sway or limiting your trailer's movement while you're cruising. The maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes is determined by the set braking output.
You can also add a manual override button (C83HR - sold separately) to your dash so you can use the manual override without the app. The app must be running - either open or in the background - for the button to work. The button has an adhesive pad for a quick-stick installation and includes an easily replaceable battery.
Save Multiple Trailer Profiles
Get on the road faster by saving your settings. With the app, you can add and store multiple profiles for both trailers and vehicles so that your braking output, sensitivity, and display preferences will be ready to go as soon as you hook up. This is perfect if you own a landscaping business and you don't want to have to reset the controller every time you swap out trucks or trailers. But it's also really convenient to have at home. Because you can use the Echo on any car that has a 7-way, you and your spouse can trade off towing the family camper without having to completely redo the settings each time. You'll have the ideal settings waiting for you.
Dark Mode for Night-Time Towing
The ECHO Smart Control app has an included dark mode for driving at night. This will change your background from white to black to cut down on glare and make the app safe and comfortable to use.
Because your phone functions as the interface with this brake controller, there is very little install work to be done. The main unit mounts out of sight and out of the way under your dash. You won't be dinging your knee on a bulky brake controller or interfering with your vehicle's lower airbags. This product comes with an adhesive pad and 4 zip-ties to make it easy to mount anywhere. Just don't zip-tie the box to wiring or cables that can shift as you drive. Thanks to the 3-axis accelerometer, the main unit can be positioned at any angle or position. No matter how you install it, the unit will sense the direction of travel and deliver smooth, even braking.
The easiest way to install this brake controller is to get a custom, vehicle-specific adapter (sold separately) that plugs right into both your vehicle and the main unit. For even easier installation, a vehicle-specific wiring adapter (sold separately) is available for most newer trucks and SUVs. One end of the custom adapter plugs into your vehicle, and the other end plugs into the controller - no hardwiring required.
To finish your setup, you'll need to download the ECHO Smart Control app on your phone. Then, with your vehicle running and Bluetooth enabled on your phone, pair your smartphone with the main unit. You'll enter the 6-digit code posted on the side of the brake controller and provided on a quick-reference card included in the package. Once the device and the controller are paired, the LED light will turn a solid blue.
Plug the trailer's 7-way wiring harness into your vehicle's 7-way. The Echo under-dash will flash with a yellow light for 5 to 8 seconds while calibrating, then turn solid green once it's done.
Your last step is to create a towing profile on the app. This will save your settings and ensure the brake controller is ready to use the next time you tow.
The Curt Echo under-dash brake controller comes equipped with proportional braking to give you the best towing experience. Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.
The Echo under-dash uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to sense how your vehicle is braking so it can send the right amount of braking power to your trailer. It measures the inertia of your tow vehicle and activates the trailer's brakes to enture that your trailer slows at the same rate. The result is uniform braking across your towing setup. No push-pull action - just smooth, proportional braking every time.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 30-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Bluetooth-enabled brake controller lets you monitor and control all your braking activity directly from your phone. User-friendly mobile app saves multiple trailer profiles, and the main unit mounts out of sight under your dash for a clean interior.I was looking for a trailer brake controller that did not require a permanent mounting to the dash or center console of my 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk. I initially considered the wireless bluetooth controller from Curt Echo that plugs directly into the 7-pin outlet next to the tow hitch. However, reviews from individuals that tow RV trailers identified that particular option prevents the 12v battery on the trailer from charging off of the TV while connected. This would limit the RV utilization during long trips involving boondocking.
The Curt Echo under-dash controller seems to solve that problem and uses the same user interface as the Curt Echo.
Easy to install and operate; problem solved!
Was not aware this device draws on the battery constantly. I don't daily drive my truck and have had to replace the battery twice in one month due to being drained below the point where they could be recharged. $[XX] later and this controller removed, I've not had any problems with the battery
This brake controller has to be unplugged when not in use or it drains the battery in a few days. I had to have a electrical test done in my vehicle ($XXX). The etrailer tech said the test was done incorrectly. The Chevy dealer claims it was accurate. I’m left with a problem.
I really wanted a trailer brake controller that I didn’t have to stick an ugly knob/box hanging off my dash. This was my solution and it works perfectly. Plugged right into my Honda Ridgeline existing plug, and easily connected to the app on my phone. Nice setup.
This is the old obsolete model of Curt Echo which has to be installed under the dashboard. The newer version, which attaches to the electrical system in the rear of the vehicle, is superior and now preferred by most trailer owners. The above version should be taken off the catalog.
It was a very simple install. Only problem I had was getting my fat fingers in the right position to install the adapter harness into place. Took maybe 3 minutes though. Web site said it wasn't compatible with my truck, so I called. After a short wait Jesse came on. He was extremely patient as I explained my problem and had me fixed up in just a few minutes. The shipment arrived 2 days early wich is rare these days. Very pleased for sure.
Easy to install once you dig out its connector from under the dash. H Ave the unit completely hidden.
As first time truck and pop-up trailer users, we initially purchased a cheaper brake controller that required drilling the dash. This is a new truck, so we decided to switch and spend more for the Bluetooth. etrailer was easy to work with for a return, and the Bluetooth brake controller is fantastic - so easy to use with our new trailer!
I’ve bought several items in the last year from etrailer. The service and duality never disappoint!
Sherry was extremely friendly and very helpful when I had questions about the correct fit for my truck. She got me the information I needed and took my order and the parts shipped the same day. I was amazed at how fast I got my order.
This controller took me literally 15 minutes to install with the required pigtail and my Rubicon with factory towing package installed. When I initially downloaded the app and connected, it actuated and locked the brakes. I simple deleted the app and reinstalled and everything worked normal.
The instructions are a little confusing. Curt provided an instruction manual that leads you to believe you need additional components to complete the install. It’s a general instruction book and needs to clarify the diagrams aren’t necessarily accurate when buying specific components.
Installed the controller under the dash out of the way. Downloading and setting up the app was easy. I have set a profile for my trailer loaded and empty. This is a nice feature.
The app stays open while driving, so the manual brake button is visible, and easy to access, if needed.
Works like a charm!
Fast and cheap!
Very easy plug and play install. Worked flawlessly with app.
It was exactly what I needed
Shipping was super quick, showed up two days earlier than expected. Easy to order and the website is easy to use.
Great product and at a great price.
