If you're looking for an American-made hitch that rides quietly, offers a quick and easy setup, and provides you with supreme handling, the Blue Ox SwayPro might be just what you're after. When we tested this system, the truck and trailer felt like one unit, and noise wasn't an issue at all. Overall, the SwayPro came out on top and proved to be one of our favorite weight distribution systems.

Pro Tip: Before you invest in a weight distribution hitch, make sure your cargo is evenly loaded in your trailer to keep the weight balanced. If you still have a hard time even after balancing your tongue weight, a weight distribution hitch should help.

Blue Ox SwayPro Offers Superior Sway Control

Blue Ox SwayPro Positive Caster

The SwayPro is designed to keep your trailer centered behind your vehicle as you tow, no matter what crosswinds or obstacles try to get in your way. To do this, the head on the system is built with a positive caster angle. You might've heard of caster in reference to your car; it's the same technology that vehicles use to stay centered on the road. When you turn a corner in your car and let go of the steering wheel, the wheel automatically returns to center. This is caster taking over. Well, the SwayPro functions much the same way. The positive caster angle that's built into this hitch works in tandem with the tapered spring bars to create a self-centering force that keeps your trailer consistently centered behind your tow vehicle.

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The trunnions inside the head assembly hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly hold your trailer in line.

A close-up shot of the Blue Ox SwayPro's bracket shows the chain rotated and pulled taught with very few chain links exposed

At the other end of this weight distribution system, you'll find 2 more points of built-in sway control. Blue Ox's rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible, with the majority of the chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. This means that each chain is held more stable than they are in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed.

This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from swaying - all without the creaking, grinding, and popping noises you get with friction-style sway control setups. Moreover, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage anything.

The Blue Ox SwayPro's No-Hassle Setup

When it's time to install the system for the first time, you might be surprised at how easy it is to do. All in all, you can probably have it done within an hour - 2 at the most.

First, the head. With just the right amount of adjustment angle already preset, it's ready to go right out of the box! No need to fine-tune it with hard-to-access washers or a difficult-to-use thumbscrew! The only thing you'll need to adjust is the height of the head on the shank. After that, to get the trunnion bars installed, just insert them into the sockets, and lock them in place with the included pins and clips.

Quick Tip: If you upgrade to a new trailer in the future, and you end up needing a system for a different tongue weight, you can just swap out the SwayPro's spring bars without having to buy a whole new hitch.

To get the Blue Ox SwayPro ready to go, just insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Other weight distribution systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. To get the SwayPro ready to go, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Why Use a Weight Distribution Hitch?

Diagram showing weight distribution on a truck and towing a camper

  • Prevents uneven tire wear on your vehicle and trailer
  • Keeps the rear of your tow vehicle from sagging
  • Lets you tow to the max capacity of your trailer hitch
  • Stops your headlights from pointing up at the sky
  • Gives you control over steering your rig

Selecting the Right Weight Distribution System

  • Think "Goldilocks"
    • If you go for overbuilt, you'll have a rigid ride
    • If it's not strong enough, it's virtually useless
  • Let your tongue weight be your guide

Your tongue weight is the first thing you need to know when figuring out which weight distribution system you need. Most people think that if they get the highest-rated system possible, it'll be smooth sailing. But actually, this will create a rigid ride and a bouncing trailer. On the other hand, if the system isn't strong enough, it won't be able to distribute the weight properly, making it virtually useless.

Once you know your trailer's tongue weight, add it to the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. Then just choose a weight distribution system rated for that combined tongue weight.

  • Can The Same Weight Distribution Hitch Used With Dump Trailer Be Used With a Travel Trailer?
Your situation is a great option for the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution # BLU54TR. This particular kit is rated for trailers up to 15,000lbs with a tongue weight of 1,000-1,500lbs. When you need to haul your travel trailer you can use some different spring bars that are better for the weight of your smaller trailer. There are the 750-1,000LB Bars # BXW4007 and 550-750LB Bars # BXW4006 which will be closer to what your travel trailer requires. We also have Lift Brackets # BXW4010...

  • Do they Make Weight Distribution Systems for 2-1/2 Hitches?
Yes, they do. The Blue Ox Sway Pro item # BLU54TR and item # BXW2003 are a couple of our most popular weight distribution systems that include the 2-1/2" shank. If you already have a weight distribution system, or want to go with a different manufacturer, you can use the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank item # EQ90-02-4900. The bolt patterns are standard so this will work with nearly all systems on the market. If you would like a more specific recommendation, feel free to email me directly...

  • Best Weight Distribution Hitch For 10,000 lb Trailer & 2-1/2 Inch Hitch
For a trailer that weighs 10,000 lbs when fully loaded, you'll need a higher-rated weight distribution hitch, and the best one for that is from Blue Ox, called the SwayPro. The correctly rated SwayPro that also fits a 2-1/2 inch hitch receiver is the following: - Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU54TR The SwayPro # BLU54TR is rated for trailers with a total tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs so it's perfectly rated for your trailer. But aside from being...

  • Will 2 Inch Hitch Ball Fit Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution Hitch BLU54TR
Yes, you can use a 2 inch hitch ball with the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control # BLU54TR. There isn't a 2 inch hitch ball with the max 15,000 lb capacity though as 2 inch balls don't have the same rating as 2-5/16 inch balls. The max 2 inch hitch ball rating that will work with this SwayPro is the 12,000 lb 2" Hitch Ball # 40038.

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For A Ford F-350 And 950lb Tongue Weight
Hi Adam, The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control for 2-1/2" Hitch # BLU54TR has a tongue weight capacity range of 1,100 - 1,500lbs so it's a bit above what you're needing and would give you a bad ride quality. You would need the Blue Ox SwayPro # BXW1000 and would need to swap out the shank with part # BXW4028 to fit your 2.5" trailer hitch since they don't offer a 2.5" version at this capacity. This version of the SwayPro has a tongue weight capacity range of 750lbs -...

  • What Rating Weight Distribution System Should Trailer with GVWR of 10k Have
Hey Austin, so the trick to picking out a weight distribution system is to go with one that has a tongue weight range that matches the tongue weight of the trailer. So in your case you'd need a system that has a tongue weight range of right at 1,000-1,500 lbs like what the Blue Ox SwayPro part # BLU54TR has.

  • Appropriate Blue Ox SwayPro System for 2025 Starcraft Autumn Ridge
Hi Kipp; the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control for 2-1/2" Hitch # BLU54TR will work well with this setup. The tongue weight range for this system is 1,000-1,500 lbs. With batteries and propane added to the trailer tongue you will be sitting right around 1,000 lbs with nothing else in the trailer. Once you get the rest of the trailer loaded I expect you will fall somewhere in the middle of the range. Since tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight,...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2021 Imagine 3250BH
Hey Brian, I would recommend the Reese Strait Line kit part # RP66074 which has the best sway control that prevents sway before it starts. Since you have a 2.5 inch hitch then you'd want the shank part # EQ90-02-4900 and you'd be set. The Blue Ox you mentioned isn't a bad option but if you want the best at preventing sway the Strait Line is the way to go for sure.

  • How To Use A Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution On A Camper Or Trailer With C-Channel Frame
You are definitely correct in that the # BXW4010 Clamp-On Brackets that come with the Blue Ox SwayPro # BLU54TR are not going to be a good option for your camper. However, we do have what you need to make this work. What you are looking for is the Blue Ox Signature Series Lift Brackets # BXW4021. These will fit all models of SwayPro and can either be clamped around the frame with the included hardware, or bolted through the frame (though this way will require drilling through said frame)....

  • What is the Rise/Drop on Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution BLU54TR
The 5" drop and 10" rise measurement for the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution # BLU54TR is more accurate. 8" and 2" is not correct at all. The exact rise is 10.61" and the exact drop is 4.89". I apologize for the confusion. Blue Ox measures from the middle of the shank to the top of the ball which has lead to some discrepancies. The correct way to measure rise/drop is from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform.
