Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Unique Features of Blue Ox SwayPro

Blue Ox SwayPro Spring Bars

Unlike other weight distribution systems, the SwayPro has automatically locking brackets throughout. Both spring bars insert, slotted side up, into the head assembly and then lock securely in place. Removal is just as easy - simply lift the locking pins on the trunnions and slide the bars out. Blue Ox spring bars are interchangeable with each other. If you buy a new trailer or tow vehicle and you need to increase or decrease your capacity, you can simply buy new spring bars instead of purchasing a whole new system.

Blue Ox SwayPro Rotating Latch Brackets

Other systems have lift brackets that require you to apply a good amount of leverage to get them to snap up, which can be difficult and frustrating. With the SwayPro, all you have to do is insert the lift chain into the bracket slot and rotate the bracket with the included wrench until the lock pin engages.

Another feature of the SwayPro is the easy-to-use head. The required pitch is already built into the head, so the only adjustment that may be needed is the placement of the head on the shank. Move the head up or down along the weight distribution shank to achieve the proper height. No additional, fine-tune adjustment is needed, which means no hard-to-access washers or difficult-to-use thumbscrew.

Built-In Tension Stops Sway

Blue Ox SwayPro System with Built-In Sway Control Hooked Up

The SwayPro offers four points of built-in sway control. Within the head assembly, the trunnions are designed to hold the spring bars securely in position, placing just enough tension on them to cause them to constantly force your trailer in line. At the other end of this weight distribution system, the rotating brackets ensure that the lift chains are pulled as taut as possible. In addition, the basic design of the brackets keeps much of the length of the lift chains wrapped up inside of the brackets. Typically, only a couple of links hang down from each bracket. So each chain is held more stable than in traditional weight distribution systems, where more than twice as many links are exposed. This tight, stable design limits the movement of the spring bars so that they can exert more force on your trailer to effectively keep it from shifting side to side. Furthermore, unlike many friction-style sway controls, the SwayPro allows you to back up your trailer without having to remove or disengage the system.

Only disappointment was the latch wrench. Previous review (... was impressed that Blue Ox has totally upgraded the chain latch wrench. No longer that flat piece of metal. The new wrench is a plated, heavy duty socket wrench. Much like a wheel lug nut wrench that is made especially for releasing the latches). Apparently the upgraded version of the wrench is hit -or- miss.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

The product is well built, easy to install and tows great. The downside is the chains. Before upgrading to a new trailer, I got rid of the standard chain style weight distribution bars and went to the square bar style. After getting a new trailer, my 14k bar style wasn't rated for the tongue weight and I had to upgrade to this. The new trailer is only 14k loaded but has a 2k pound tongue weight. This is the only hitch on the market that would carry the tongue weight and I am back to chains. They are difficult to deal with and if you dont have the tongue jack taking most of the pressure off of them, the wrench to release the chains can get away from you. If somebody make a chain less unit, I would get away from this.

Comments
Great product, absolutely no issues with it. However, the chains still stink and wish they had a better alternative for this heavy hitch.

Great product! Exactly what I was looking for to use with my hitch extension for my boat trail and camper set up.

Comments
Excellent! This is exactly what I needed to help with the tongue weight of my boat trailer. This product takes the worry out of towing with the extended trailer hitch due to the camper on the truck.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

Pros: Easy to install, doesnt squeak like all of the other ones. Able to back up without disconnecting. Easy to use as long as you lift the trailer up all the way on the tounge before you connect/disconnect. My truck (2017 F150 with 2020 Cougar 29BHS) sits perfectly level with no sag at all. Sway is minimal although I have yet to drive in anything with winds greater than 30MPH (thankfully) Cons: Main con for me is having to raise up the tounge everytime to connect or disconnect the chains. If you dont do this, you will never be able to get enough links in for proper tension, and when you go to release the chains the tension will be extreme causing the breaker bar to go flying forward.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

We have a 23 foot Airstream we pull with a Suburban and use the Blue Ox Sway distribution hitch. We purchased this a year ago and went on 10 weekend trips last summer 6 of them over the continental divide in Colorado. This summer we have been on 3 weekend trips and once over the continental divide. We have many more trips planned. The hitch is easy to hook up and was easy to install. Etrailer was great at helping getting the correct size bars. We have pulled the trailer in rain and winds and feel very secure in any road condition we have encountered. No issues with backing up. Nice hitch I recommend it.

Comments
We have a 23 foot Airstream we with the suburban for 3 seasons now with the Blue Ox Sway Hitch. We go every weekend somewhere in Colorado. Drove through New Mexico for Christmas. That is a windy state. I did not know the wind was blowing so hard until we stop and get out. Must be working. I did put a piece if tape on the part that turns so I can see where the wrench goes and on the chain link. This helps with hooking and unhooking for reference. Enjoy.

I installed the hitch but have yet to have my travel trailer out on the road yet, to test it, hopefully it will be sometime this summer, the installation was no problem.

Comments
The hitch works fantastic easy to hook up and no sway, and it is quiet.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

The Blue Ox SwayPro 1500 arrived today. Ordered online from eTrailer on Tuesday and delivered to West Michigan on Friday. FAST! etrailer service and support is always First Class. While heavy, the Blue Ox WDH was in perfect condition. The quality and appearance of the Clue Ox is great. The hitch is powder coated and very clean. I was impressed that Blue Ox has totally upgraded the chain latch wrench. No longer that flat piece of metal. The new wrench is a plated, heavy duty socket wrench. Much like a wheel lug nut wrench that is made especially for releasing the latches. Our new TT was delivered to our dealer while our state is in lockdown. There it sits until May 1. I will update review after install and first trip. With all the changes in the world... very happy to purchase a product Made in U.S.A.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I have no experience with other WDH's but this unit does what I expect it to do. I pull a 33' 7,500# Jayco trailer and it allows me to move the weight as needed to the front axle and it seems to control sway very well. I originally used this with an F-150 that was exceeding my rear axle rating so it was crucial that I get the weight shifted forward which this unit did well. I have since moved up to an F-250 so it is not nearly as critical but it still makes the trips pleasant. This unit is specific to underslung couplers like Jayco uses. Also being able to back the trailer without disengaging the WDH is an advantage over some of the other brands. The action of the chains during disconnect can be intimidating and dangerous until you get accustomed to the process. The one complaint I have is not with the unit itself but the wrench that is provided to load and unload the chains. It is flat (hurts your hand) and too short to get adequate leverage. I suggest you use an 18-24" cheater bar with a 1" socket to load/unload the chains. Otherwise very happy with the purchase

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

One year later and we logged a few thousand miles pulling our Rockwood Mini-lite with the Blue Ox Sway-Pro. It took a little getting used to the chain hookup but once you do it a couple of times it’s pretty easy. The hitch is awesome. It has great weight redistribution and the trailer has never swayed once. Even in strong cross winds. Very pleased with this purchase and with e-trailers price and tutorial video. They are my go to for all things towing.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

1yr review. First off Amy with customer support was extremely helpful with making sure I picked the correct product and to get it to me in a timely manner. Now for the product The BlueOx unit has been great, the hitch is a little heavy for some people but it is manageable, the installation was a breeze with clear instructions (video) and took about an hour with a quick trip to rent a torque wrench to tighten to spec and have my local dealership install the ball to avoid the cost of another socket. Setting the correct chain tension is a trial and error process based on your vehicle and trailer weight, I have two different settings based on it I’m carrying fresh water or not. Using the cam tension system can take some force to tighten but lift the tongue more it will help alleviate this but my wife does struggle with it when she hooks up (Don’t get hurt when camping). As for pulling it keeps the trailer on track (I pull a 33’ TT) provided you have good tension on the bars of it sways a bit take up another link. The unit is quite so no popping or cracking (like most) and you can back the unit in without disconnecting. The unit has held up to the Arizona weather and still looks like new except for the nuts welded to the tensioner where the wrench connects has some surface rust and wear. Overall this is a great product I like that additional parts can be purchased separately for additional trailer uses or upgrade for new trailers. My only complaint would be the amount of force needed to set the cam tensioners.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

etrailer is excellent as far as providing vast amounts of info before the sale and providing communication after placing your order through order delivery, and even after delivery. What other company shows you when and who processed your order, who packed your order, who shipped your order - providing names and pictures of the people involved along the way, along with all the other tracking info. As far as the equalizer hitch, I haven't towed with it yet but seems extremely heavy duty and well made and should do the job. Most reviews I researched on it were good. I will follow-up once I tow with it. I do have a few issues with it though before even using it. First issue is that the spring for the spring loaded button that holds each equalizer bar into each side of the head is so strong that it can't be lifted up with fingers in order to release the equalizer bar when removing them. Need to remember to have a screwdriver handy to pry the button up in order to release the bars. I did see 2 versions of equalizer bars in videos. One version had a slot, one version had a blind hole that these buttons went into. The bars having the slot allowed the bars to be rotated during disassembly for easy removal. Can't do that with the blind hole version. I don't know which version is the latest or best - I will call etrailer or Blue-Ox to find out. I had 3 people try to lift up on the buttons with the hitch assembled but not installed, and no one could lift them enough to release them. That might be a good thing though - prevents them from inadvertently releasing. Also, based on the 2 sets of exploded views that came with the instructions (one dated 2013, one dated 2020), it appears I might have received an older model that comes with a flat rotating latch wrench because the newer dated exploded view shows a rounded wrench (like a lug nut wrench) with a different p/n. I'll have to call etrailer or Blue Ox on this issue too. Lastly, the box the hitch came in was heavy duty, but it still should have been a little stronger knowing how very heavy packages get handled by delivery services. The box had a small opening ripped open in it in the corner and the hand hold slots were ripped open twice as big as normal, along with the hardware bag inside was ripped open. Some hardware was scattered inside the box when I opened it and 2 of the 4 hex headed "set screws" were missing. Although you only need 2 set screws, these were different lengths, so I contacted etrailer and they have been working on getting me replacements. Lastly, I can now see after watching some of the review videos on You Tube and playing with the hitch - about what some people were talking about - how the chains could get wedged during use unless you twist them somewhat, and I can also see how when you try to do a controlled release of the tension on the equalizer bars with the rotating latch wrench - if you don't have a lot of the pressure off of them by jacking the hitch up high enough before releasing them that this may cause the wrench to uncontrollably rotate into the released position unless you really have a good hold on it - which may be hard to do since you're other hand would be busy removing the release pin on the rotating latch. I'll know more when I actually use it, but it has me a little concerned.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I put this on my trailer as soon as I bought it (Coachman Apex Nano 194BHS) so I can't say how it would drive without it. But it is a very solid and well crafted system. No weird popping noises from it, which is what I didn't like about solid bar systems. Installed quickly and easily (watch the etrailer install video!) Mine came with the new hefty tire iron like wrench (instead of the flat knuckle buster). Seems like a huge improvement, absolutely a necessary upgrade for such a premium product

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

The hitch came very quickly and was well packaged. I was surprised to find an upgraded chain tool and 20k lbs ball already attached to the hitch. The reason I have four stars was there was not option to select a longer shank length. So, $[XX] dollars later I was able to get an extended shank for my 3/4 ton truck.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

First I have to recognize and thank the excellent etrailer customer service. The etrailer team contacted me immediately to address an order issue, and did so quickly. The BXW1500 arrived in a timely manner, and the only issue was the shipping/handling by UPS. The box was rather beat-up, and the chains were hanging out, but all of the product was intact and we had no issue with install. The ride is significantly better than the previous hitch from the dealer (R3 Recurve), and I have noted improved distribution across the axles at the scales. Previous setup was a lesser bar rating, and we determined the tongue weight and cargo was at the higher end of the bar. As such, we chose the 1500 lb TW bars. The BXW1500 material and build quality is quite impressive, particularly in comparison to the previous hitch. Vehicle and trailer is: 2015 Silverado 1500 with Max-Trailering Package and a 2020 GD Imagine 2800BH.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I have been using the Blue Ox SwayPro WD Hitch for 1,500 tongue weight on our 30' Arctic Fox travel trailer for one year now. No regrets as this hitch has been an easy to setup and use and it seems to do it's job nicely. Due to the height of our trailer's hitch I ordered a Reese Titan Weight Dist Shank to use with the SwayPro and the pair work great together.

Review from a similar SwayPro in Weight Distribution Hitch

I had the unfortunate experience with having your new airstream 20' taken out by a hydroplaning car last month. The airstream rolled right and on to its side, and the hitch released keeping our Suburban from rolling. The stabilizer bars and chains maintained the trailer connection and eased the stop with the rear tires of ground. The hitch bent the receiver on the truck, and the only damage appeared to be one " sprung" spring bar. A good result from a bad experience!

  • Difference Between Blue Ox # BLU66FR and Blue Ox # BXW1006 Weight Distribution & Sway Control Hitch
The difference between these two systems is the included shank. The Blue Ox # BLU66FR shank has 9 adjustment holes allowing for a 7.8 inch drop to a 14.72 inch rise, where as the Blue Ox # BXW1006 has a 11 hole shank allowing for a 7 inch drop to a 13 inch rise. So they are nearly identical. To measure drop/rise, measure from the top/inside of the truck receiver to the bottom of the coupler. Since the measurement you supplied was to the top of the coupler we need to subtract 2" to...

This is a very impressive weight distribution system that is much quieter than other systems due to the fact that it uses trunnion spring bars that flex for a controlled, even ride.
