The Hopkins Smart Light makes it easy to diagnose faults in your trailer wiring. The Smart Light has 3 separate LEDs on the side of the unit that act as test lights. These LEDs allow you to see if the tail light is receiving power, and if not, why.
The bottom LED (labeled "G") shows if there's a fault with the ground connection. A poor ground is the most common problem seen with trailer wiring. The bottom LED on the Smart Light will alert you to an improperly connected ground by flashing repeatedly. Check that your ground connection is properly set on a clean, unpainted metal area of your trailer's frame. If there is any rust or corrosion around the ring terminal itself, clean it off and reset the ground.
The top and center LEDs (labeled "S" and "T" respectively) are the testers for the stop/turn and tail light functions. If both of these LEDs light up, and the trailer light illuminates as well, then everything is working correctly and you're ready to tow.
As long as the center and top LEDs light up, power is getting to the light. So if these LEDs illuminate, but the trailer light itself does not, then a bulb must need to be replaced.
If only 1 of these LEDs lights up, then there is likely a problem with the connection for the circuit that is not illuminated. Check the wire associated with that function to determine the problem.
With the Smart Light, there's no need to spend precious time figuring out why your connection isn't working. Simply check the LEDs, fix the issue, and you're ready to go.
If a trailer is 80" or wider at its widest point, then it requires rear clearance lights in addition to basic trailer lights. These clearance lights indicate the width of the trailer when it is viewed from the back.
To meet these requirements on a flatbed utility trailer where the bed extends past the wheels, you can install combination trailer lights that include the rear clearance function. For proper mounting, the lights must be installed at the widest points on the rear of the trailer - one on each corner.

Jake: Hey, guys. It's Jake here with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at, and I'm going to show you how easy it is to swap your factory tail lights on your trailer out for these Hopkins tail lights. These tail lights are going to be fully submergible in water, so you're going to be able to use them for your jet ski and your boat trailers, as well as your landscaping trailers. Or, if you have a skid loader trailer, that'll work for that too. These are going to be a good replacement for if you have a broken or damaged tail light. We do sell these in a single left or right rear tail light, or you can buy them in a set, like we have here. What's nice about this kit is that the left rear tail light is going to have an integrated white light underneath shining down on your license plate to make sure others can see your license plate while driving at night.
The lights themselves are going to have a sturdy plastic construction, and have a seal between the lens itself and the light, protecting the light from water. Each light is going to come with the proper wiring to wire it to your factory wiring on your trailer, along with the ground. That's going to ground your light to your frame of your trailer. Now, the nice part about buying the kit of two tail lights is that you're going to get this tester. This is going to plug into the 4-pole on your trailer, and you're going to be able to see if all of your lights are working properly. So, you'll be able to diagnose whatever your problem is with your tail lights once you get your new tail lights. Now that we've gone over some of those features, let's go ahead and show you how easy it is to get them into place.
To start the installation, we'll need to first remove our old tail lights. Now, we're replacing ours today because our tail lights are burnt out. If you have either a broken or damaged tail light, that'll be a good idea to replace them too.To get your light in place, you'll start by taking your white ground wire with the ring terminal included. Slide it through your holes in your frame. Now, if your holes don't exactly match up to the pattern that your factory lights were, you may have to drill another hole.
We'll slide it in place and take our included nuts and fasten them on the back side. You don't want to use a power tool while tightening this down because you want to be able to feel how tight they're getting. You don't want to damage your light. We're going to be using heat shrink butt connectors to connect our wiring. This is going to help to keep any contaminants or water, dirt and debris out of our connections so that they last for a long time. We will connect the black wire from our lights to the brown wire on our trailer for our running lights, and the red wire will go to the green wire on our trailer for our right turn signal.
Then we'll crimp these down. Now we can use a heat source to shrink down our butt connectors, and then secure our wires out of the way. We will repeat this process on the other side where we will find a yellow wire instead of our green wire for the left turn signal. Now we can go ahead and test out our lights to make sure everything's working properly. Here we have our running lights, our left turn signal, our brake lights, and our right turn signal.Well, guys, with all that being said, that's going to do it for our look and installation of the Hopkins replacement tail lights.
